Glioblastoma multiforme （GBM） is the most common adult primary tumor of the cen- tral nervous system. The current standard of care for glioblastoma patients involves a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy with the alkylating agent temozolomide. Several mech- anisms underlying the inherent and acquired temozolomide resistance have been identified and con- tribute to treatment failure. Early identification of temozolomide-resistant GBM patients and improvement of the therapeutic strategies available to treat this malignancy are of uttermost impor- tance. This review initially looks at the molecular pathways underlying GBM formation and devel- opment with a particular emphasis placed on recent therapeutic advances made in the field. Our focus will next be directed toward the molecular mechanisms modulating temozolomide resistance in GBM patients and the strategies envisioned to circumvent this resistance. Finallyl we highlight the diagnostic and prognostic value of metabolomics in cancers and assess its potential usefulness in improving the current standard of care for GBM patients.

Determinants of malaria infections among children in refugee settlements in Uganda during 2018–2019

Background While 5%of 247 million global malaria cases are reported in Uganda,it is also a top refugee hosting country in Africa,with over 1.36 million *** malaria being an emerging challenge for humanitarian response in refugee settlements,little is known about its risk *** study aimed to investigate the risk factors for malaria infections among children under 5 years of age in refugee settlements in *** We utilized data from Uganda’s Malaria Indicator Survey which was conducted between December 2018 and February 2019 at the peak of malaria *** this national survey,household level information was obtained using standardized questionnaires and a total of 7787 children under 5 years of age were tested for malaria using mainly the rapid diagnostic *** focused on 675 malaria tested children under five in refugee settlements located in Yumbe,Arua,Adjumani,Moyo,Lamwo,Kiryadongo,Kyegegwa,Kamwenge and Isingiro *** extracted variables included prevalence of malaria,demographic,social-economic and environmental *** logistic regression was used to identify and define the malaria associated risk *** Overall,malaria prevalence in all refugee settlements across the nine hosting districts was 36.6%.Malaria infections were higher in refugee settlements located in Isingiro(98.7%),Kyegegwa(58.6%)and Arua(57.4%)*** risk factors were significantly associated with acquisition of malaria including fetching water from open water sources[adjusted odds ratio(aOR)=1.22,95%CI:0.08–0.59,P=0.002],boreholes(aOR=2.11,95%CI:0.91–4.89,P=0.018)and water tanks(aOR=4.47,95%CI:1.67–11.9,P=0.002).Other factors included pit-latrines(aOR=1.48,95%CI:1.03–2.13,P=0.033),open defecation(aOR=3.29,95%CI:1.54–7.05,P=0.002),lack of insecticide treated bed nets(aOR=1.15,95%CI:0.43–3.13,P=0.003)and knowledge on the causes of malaria(aOR=1.09,95%CI:0.79–1.51,P=0.005).Conclusions The persistence of the malaria infect

The soil resources of Sierra Leone remain an integral part of sustainable agricultural development but knowledge of the suitability of soils and their management requirements for a variety of land uses is still lacking to a greater extent. In this view, a detailed soil survey of three chiefdoms in Northern Sierra Leone was undertaken to evaluate the genesis of soils and interpret soil-landscape properties and their relationships using the toposequence and free style approach of soil survey. Three major soil types, viz, gravelly, gravel-free over gravel and gravel-free soils, formed either directly or indirectly from weathered and disintegrated parent materials of two geologic origins namely Rokel River Series (comprising of sandstone, shale and mudstone), and Granite and Acid Gneiss were identified. The gravelly soils are formed from sandstone and sandy shales of the Rokel River Series, which upon weathering released iron and hydrated oxides that hardened into plinthite upon drying. The gravel-free over gravel soils are formed from acid gneiss containing acid and intermediate igneous and metamorphic rocks, which upon weathering produced sandy clay textured soils whereas the gravel-free soils are derived from sedimentary rocks (shales and mudstones) of Rokel River Series, which upon weathering and action of organisms produced sandy clay loam and sandy clay textured soils. The gravel-free over gravel soils are mostly located in the summit and back slopes and show dark brown to dark yellowish-brown hue and moderate chroma, weak to moderate structure and absence of coarse fragments in the 0 - 40 cm layer, and a strong brown hue and high chroma, very weak fine angular blocky structure having abundance of coarse fragments from 40 cm and above. In these soils, the compactness of ironstone and sandstone gravels increases with depth. The gravel-free soils are found on three landscape positions, viz, back slopes, foot slopes and toe slopes. Aim: Over the last 15 years, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have become the most popular injectable biomaterial for soft tissue correction. With the increasing number of available HA fillers and the multiplication of facial treatments all over the world, there has been a need from physicians to better understand the HA fillers science. There is especially a growing interest in the science-based evaluation of rheological characteristics which represents an essential tool to guide physicians in the selection of the most appropriate HA fillers, administration techniques and depths of injection for their clinical applications. Methods: Four key rheological parameters (viscosity η, elasticity G', normal force FN and elasticity E') are measured and discussed on five HA fillers. Results: These four key rheological parameters are demonstrated to play a pivotal role, in combination with the cohesivity, for better predicting the clinical behavior of HA fillers at different stages of their lifetime. Conclusion: This article discusses the importance of four key rheological parameters during the main steps of the clinical HA fillers' lifetime, from the product injection to the loss of clinical effects. A better knowledge of these HA fillers' rheological parameters can help the physicians to optimize their aesthetic outcomes, safety and patient satisfaction.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of therapeutic education on adherence to antiviral treatment and sustained virological response (SVR) in a real-life setting in genotype 2/3 hepatitis C,as there are few adherence data in genotype 2/3 infection,even from randomized ***: This prospective survey included genotype 2/3 patients who received peg-interferon alfa-2b and *** was no *** was self-reported over the past 4 wk (peg-interferon) or 7 d (ribavirin).Adherence to bitherapy was defined as adherence to the two drugs for ≥ 20 *** was defined as undetectable RNA ≥ 12 wk after the end of ***: 370/674 patients received education during the first 3 mo of *** 6 mo,adherence to bitherapy was higher in educated patients (61% vs 47%,P = 0.01).Adherence to peg-interferon was 78% vs 69% (P = 0.06).Adherence to ribavirin was 70% vs 56% (P = 0.006).The SVR (77% vs 70%,P = 0.05) and relapse (10% vs 16%,P = 0.09) rates tended to be *** adjustment for baseline differences,education improved adherence [Odds ratio (OR) 1.58,P = 0.04] but not the SVR (OR 1.54,P = 0.06).CONCLUSION: In genotype 2/3 patients,therapeutic education helped maintain real-life adherence to bitherapy.
