Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNgCs). However, the use of tNgCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNgC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNgCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNgCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNgCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNgCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNgCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNgCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNgCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Microbial mat-related structures shared by both siliciclastic and carbonate formations

Microbiota has always been the dominant life form, records of which are preserved in delicate forms within siticiclastic rocks. More pronounced record in the form of stromatotites possibly obscured the fact that many of the same delicate structures may be recognizable within carbonate rocks too. The Neo- proterozoic Bhander Limestone in central India bears many such structures that are quintessentially similar to microbial mat-related structures reported from the Paleoproterozoic Chorhat Sandstone preserved within the same, Vindhyan Basin. Extensive microscopic, ultramicroscopic, and geochemical studies address the appre- hension that such bedding plane structures in carbonate rocks could be merely weathering products. Trapping, binding and stabilitization of sediment by microbial mats are atl evident. Preferred pyritization along the inferred, predefined microbial mats confirmed on the basis of EPMA （Electron Probe Microanalysis） results, and the enhanced carbon content along these mats layers and within suspected mat chips associated with them, are revealing. Raman spectroscopy, indeed, evinces enhanced kerogen content within both mats and mat chips. Interestingly, these microbial mat layers are recognized selectively within the lower of the two tiers of the Bhander Limestone. The lagoonal carbonate of the lower tier of the Bhander Limestone is muddy and contains a substantial proportion of silt-sized quartz grains that possibly impeded stromatolite growth. Stromatolites abound in the wave agitated upper tier of the Bhander Limestone which is dominated by oosparite. This paper provides evidence that the delicate microbial mat-related structures reported so far only from siticictastic rocks can *** be recognized within carbonate formations, and hopes to stimulate the search for additional such features, more preferably within carbonates originated in shallow and quiet water.

TanDEM-X multiparametric data features in sea ice classification over the Baltic sea

In this study,we assess the potential of X-band Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery for automated classification of sea ice over the Baltic Sea.A bistatic SAR scene acquired by the TanDEM-X mission over the Bothnian Bay in March of 2012 was used in the *** intensity,interferometric coherence magnitude,and interferometric phase have been used as informative features in several classification *** combinations of classification features were evaluated using Maximum likelihood(ML),Random Forests(RF)and Support Vector Machine(SVM)classifiers to achieve the best possible discrimination between open water and several sea ice types(undeformed ice,ridged ice,moderately deformed ice,brash ice,thick level ice,and new ice).Adding interferometric phase and coherence-magnitude to backscatter-intensity resulted in improved overall classification per-formance compared to using only *** RF algorithm appeared to be slightly superior to SVM and ML due to higher overall accuracies,however,at the expense of somewhat longer processing *** best overall accuracy(OA)for three methodologies were achieved using combination of all tested features were 71.56,72.93,and 72.91%for ML,RF and SVM classifiers,*** to OAs of 62.28,66.51,and 63.05%using only backscatter intensity,this indicates strong benefit of SAR interferometry in discriminating different types of sea *** contrast to several earlier studies,we were particularly able to successfully discriminate open water and new ice classes.

Synthesis and characterization of Ce_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Fe_(0.8)Co_(0.2)O_(3–δ) perovskite material:Potential cathode material for low temperature SOFCs

A sol-gel method and a modified chemical vapour deposition technique were used to produce nanostructured Ce0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3-δ materials at temperatures as low as 400 ℃. Powders were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, Raman spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM）, and nitrogen sorption at 77 K. FTIR spectra showed that the sol-gel method resulted in residual carbon groups on the materials after calcination, while the Raman and XRD analysis confirmed that both synthesis methods resulted in cubic perovskite structure. However, the chemical va- pour deposition （CVD） method resulted in materials with a smaller crystallite size when compared to those prepared via the sol-gel route. The overall morphology of the powders was irregularly shaped aggregated particles as observed by SEM and HRTEM. In addition, HRTEM analysis showed that the materials were highly crystalline. Textural analysis revealed the powders had some mesoporosity, and the surface areas were 76.69 and 65.90 m2/g for materials synthesized using the CVD and sol-gel methods, respectively. The synthesized perovskite powders were used to fabricate button cells employing samarium doped ceria （SDC） as the electrolyte and NiO/SDC as the anode materials. As cathode materials, the maximum power density observed was 308.4 mW/cm2 at 500℃.

Multiple sclerosis(MS)is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system(CNS)and is primarily characterized by immune cell infiltration leading to relapses followed by remission phases and a disease course turning progressive over time with neurodegenerative processes taking over(Amin and Hersh,2023).Of note,beyond relapse-associated worsening early in disease progression independent of relapse activity may arise independently of relapse activity and can occur in all ***-mediated damage of myelin sheaths and the subsequent loss of mature oligodendrocytes are resulting in impaired axonal integrity,neurodegeneration and accounts for irreversible neuronal damage(Kuhlmann et al.,2023).The current landscape of available disease-modifying therapies comprises mainly immunomodulatory drugs that effectively diminish relapses and slow down progression at the onset form of the disease,namely relapsing MS(RMS).In this regard,a number of drugs have been approved as disease-modifying therapies for MS by US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agencies(Box 1).

Biliary leaks after laparoscopic cholecystectomy:time to stent or time to drain

BACKgROUND:Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopan- creatography(ERCP)with placement of a biliary stent or nasobiliary(NB)drain is the procedure of choice for treatment of post-cholecystectomy bile duct *** aim of this study was to compare the effect of NB drainage versus internal biliary stenting on rates of leak closure, time elapsed until drain or stent removal,length of hospital stay and number of required endoscopic procedures. METHODS:Charts were reviewed on 20 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy complicated by Luschka or cystic duct *** patients were treated with NB drains connected to low intermittent suction and repeat NB cholangiograms were performed until leak closure was *** patients were treated with internal biliary *** sphincterotomies were performed for stone extraction or a presumed papillary *** bilomas were drained percutaneously prior to stenting. RESULTS:In all 20 patients,a cholangiogram and successful placement of a NB drain or internal stent was *** patients(20%)were found to have bile duct stones,which were extracted following a sphincterotomy. Sixteen patients required percutaneous drains to evacuate large bilomas prior to biliary *** cystic duct leaks and 5 Luschka duct leaks were reviewed. There were no complications related to *** of the leak was documented within 2 to 11 days(mean 4.7±0.9 days)in patients receiving a NB *** drains were removed non-endoscopically following leak closure. The internal stent group required stenting for 14 to 53 days(mean 29.1±4.4 days).The stent was then removed endoscopically after documentation of leak *** leaks following laparoscopic cholecystectomy closed rapidly after NB drainage and did not require repeat endoscopy for removal of the NB drain,resulting in fewer ERCPs required for treatment of biliary *** biliary stents were in place longer owing to the nature of this intermittent endos

Cancer initiation and progression is the result of an accumulation of mutations inkey tumor suppressor genes, mismatch repair genes, or oncogenes, which impact cancer cell growth, death, and differentiation. Mutations occurring in cancer tissue are termed somatic; whereas, heritable mutatons that may be passed onto subsequent generations occur in germline DNA. It is these germline mutations that can lead to cancer family syndromeswhereby family members carrying a deleterious germline mutation have an increased susceptibility to certain cancer phenotypes. Common features of hereditary cancer syndromes include early age-of-onset, multiple affected generations, rare tumor types, and/or multiple primary malignancies.

There is mounting evidence that targeting mitochondrial dysfunction following neurotrauma could be key in developing effective therapeutic strategies since mitochondria are known to play a major role in cellular bioenergetics, function, and survival following traumatic spinal cord injury （SCI）（Rabchevsky et al., 2011）. Our research group is one of the pioneers in targeting mitochondrial dysfunction to foster functional neuroprotection, having documented that phar- macological maintenance of mitochondrial function acutely results in long-term neuroprotection and improved function- al recover. We have recently reported that treatment with the pleiotropic drug, pioglitazone, maintains acute mitochondrial integrity correlated with chronic tissue sparing and functional recovery after contusion SCI, but that this was not correlated with altered neuroinflammation （Patel et al., 2017）.
