a.sessment of Cement Dust Deposit in a.Cement Fa.tory in Cotonou (Benin)

In order to a.sess the cement dust levels a. the fa.tory of the Beninese Cement Industry (BCI), a. Xwla.odji, seven sa.pling sta.ions (numbered 1 to 7) were set inside the industry a.d nine (numbered 8 to 16) were set a.ound the fa.tory in Ja.ua.y, Februa.y, a.gust a.d December. With the method of sta.nless steel pla.e a.cording to NFX 43-007 a.NOR Sta.da.d, the different sta.ions were monitored da.ly for dust collection a.l month long. The results revea.ed tha. the mea. va.ues of cement dusts inside BCI in g/m2/da. ra.ged from 1.608 to 8.752 in Ja.ua.y, from 1.13068 to 6.14924 in Februa.y, from 0.9654 to 5.2502 for a.gust a.d from 1.7220 to 9.3620 for December. With rega.d to outside BCI, the mea. va.ues of dusts rose from 8.8760 to 18.9620 in December. The lowest mea. va.ues 3.2719 a.d 4.4124 were respectively recorded in Februa.y a.d a.gust wherea. the highest va.ues 17.7309 a.d 18.9620 were respectively recorded in Ja.ua.y a.d December. Our study revea.ed month va.ia.ion in cement dust deposition with the highest va.ues in December a.d Ja.ua.y a.d the lowest va.ues in Februa.y a.d a.gust. It wa. observed tha. the content in cement dusts recorded outside the cement industry were extremely higher tha. those recorded inside the cement industry. The va.ues in the present study ha.e fa. exceeded a.l the interna.iona. sa.ety va.ues (1 g/m2/da. for a.NOR a.d 350 mg/m2/da. Ta.Luft) a.d could pose hea.th ha.a.ds. Therefore protective mea.ures a.e suggested to mitiga.e the risk of occupa.iona. ha.a.ds for the cement industria. workers.

To eva.ua.e lea. a.d ca.mium conta.ina.ion in Moringa.oleifera.lea.es powders ma.keted in Cotonou a.d hea.th risks a.socia.ed with its consumption, cross-sectiona. a.d a.a.ytica. study were done from October 23th, 2012 to June 20th, 2013. Sa.ples of Moringa.powders were purcha.ed a. different outlets (hea.th centers, superma.kets, pha.ma.y, etc.). a.sa.s were performed by a.omic a.sorption spectrophotometry a.ter digestion a.cording ca.cina.ion method. Pb a.d Cd levels were compa.ed with Codex a.imenta.ius sta.da.ds, using the Student t test. Da.ly Exposure Doses (DDE) a.d Ha.a.d Quotients (HQ) specific to ea.h conta.ina.t were ca.cula.ed using a.conventiona. method. Results revea.ed tha. the mea. concentra.ion of lea. for a.l sa.ples (1.526 mg/kg) exceeded of a.out 5.08 times the ma.imum a.lowa.le limit wherea. ca.mium levels (0.246 mg/kg) wa. not sta.istica.ly higher tha. the sta.da.d. The highest concentra.ions of Pb a.d Cd a.e respectively 4.263 mg/kg a.d 0.354 mg/kg. Children a.e 2.3 to 3.8 times in grea.er da.ger tha. a.ults a.though a.l QD ca.cula.ed a.e less tha. 1, reflecting tha. there is a.low risk to consumers in genera.. For both meta.s, DJE specifica.ly linked to the consumption of Moringa.wa. less tha. 2% compa.ed to other kinds of food inta.e. In conclusion, the current level of conta.ina.ion (with lea. a.d ca.mium) of Moringa.lea.es powders ma.keted in Cotonou is not yet a. a.a.ming threa. to consumers’ hea.th. However, ca.e must be ta.en to reduce chemica. pollution especia.ly soils where these pla.ts grow.

a.study on the use of pesticides in ma.ket-ga.dening production wa. ca.ried out on 108 ma.ket-ga.deners in the rura. city of Tori-Bossito in Southern Benin. The objective of the study wa. to cha.a.terize the potentia. risks of pesticides usa.e by fa.mers a.d the impa.ts on their hea.th a.d on the environment. Two risk indexes were ca.cula.ed for ea.h pesticide: a. environmenta. risk index (ERI) a.d a.hea.th risk index (HRI). First sta.e la.va.of the mosquito a.des a.gypti were used a. bio-indica.or for detecting insecticide residue in vegeta.le before their ha.vesting on the fa.ms. The highest ERI were obta.ned for ca.bofura., chlorpyriphos ethyl a.d endosulfa.. Pesticide residues were found in 42% of the sa.ples of lea.es of eggpla.t, cucumber, a.a.a.th a.d sola.um. Vegeta.les growers used pesticides tha. ma. be highly ha.a.dous a.d which were not registered in most ca.es. These situa.ions could ha.e unexpected consequences including the exposure of consumers to hea.th ha.a.ds.

Microbiologica. a.a.yses were rea.ized a.d severa. pa.hogenic ba.teria. stra.ns were isola.ed from the vendors: Sta.hylococcus a.reus (26/122), sulphite-reducing clostridia.(14/122) a.d Escherichia.coli (10/122). The food vendors in the school ca.teen ma. be the vectors of germs tha. ca.se food poisoning a.ong young students.

Vegeta.les a.e very importa.t sources of protein a.d minera.s. Some of them even ha.e medicina. properties recognized tra.itiona.ly. Despite the la.ge number of studies ca.ried out on va.ious vegeta.les a.d vegeta.le crops, very few ha.e scientifica.ly explored the usefulness of S. ma.roca.pon. This study identified the ma.n groups of chemica.s a.d minera. elements to expla.n a.y medicina. or nutritiona. va.ue. It ha. a.so identified some toxic elements conta.ned in this vegeta.le. Phytochemica. screening wa. ca.ried out on the lea.es a.d fruits of S. ma.roca.pon. Some minera. elements were determined by a.omic a.sorption Spectrophotometry (sodium, pota.sium, ca.cium, ma.nesium) while protein, phosphorous, iron, copper, zinc a.d toxic meta.s (lea., ca.mium) were determined by Molecula. a.sorption Spectrophotometry. Fa., a.h, moisture a.d vita.ins were sought. The study showed tha. the lea.es of S. ma.roca.pon were more nutritious tha. fruits (P ma.roca.pon require tha. the consumption of vegeta.les should be a. va.ied a. possible a.d tha. the fruit ma. be consumed with ca.tion. In a.dition, constra.nts a.out vegeta.le cultiva.ion in Cotonou could lea. to resea.ch findings tha. could help provide techniques for producing hea.thy *** a.a.d K1 were found in both pa.ts of this vegeta.le very rich in wa.er while vita.in E ha. not been detected.
