Strategies for Achieving Sustainable Logging Rate in the Brazilian Amazon Forest

Data of increment of the remnant trees after logging, ingrowth and mortality was obtained by assessment before logging and after 6 years, two sites of 50 ha, in Amazon forest. Logging scenarios were simulated to identify the logging rate potential for each studying site, by diameter class projection method. The cycle of 35 years and the logging rate of 30 ***-1 exceed the time required for recovery in the primary forest, in the studied site. The simulation showed that in the studying area, a well-planned logging, with minimum logging damage would be possible to implement an initial cycle of 25 years to the forest to recover 30 ***-1, if 50% of the timber stock were reserved. The forest increment, beyond important factors such as the increase of individual species, is quite dependent on the remnant trees.

Mixed-Species Allometric Equations to Quantify Stem Volume and Tree Biomass in Dry Afromontane Forest of Ethiopia

Volume and biomass equations are essential tools to determine forest productivity and enable forest managers to make informed decisions. However, volume and biomass estimation equations are scarce for Afromontane forests in Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular. This limits our knowledge of the standing volume of wood, biomass, and carbon stock of the forests therein. In this study, we developed a new mixed-species volume and biomass equations for Afromontane forests and compared them with generic pantropical and local models. A total of 193 sampled trees from seven dominant tree species were used to develop the equations. Various volume and biomass equations were fitted using robust linear and nonlinear regression. Model comparison indicated that the best model to estimate stem volume was ln(v)=-9.909+ 0.954*ln(d2h), whereas the best model to estimate biomass was ln(b)=-2.983+ 0.949*ln(ρd2h) . These equations explained over 85% of the variations in the stem volume and biomass measurements. The mean density and basal area of trees in the forest with d ≥ 2 cm was 631.5 stems·ha-1 and 24.4 m2·ha-1. Based on the newly developed equations, the forest has on average 303.0 m3·ha-1 standing volume of wood and 283.8 Mg·ha-1 biomass stock. The newly developed allometric equations derived from this study can be used to accurately determine the stem volume, biomass, and carbon storage in the Afromontane forests in Ethiopia and elsewhere with similar stand characteristics and ecological conditions. By contrast, the generic pan-tropical and other local models appear to provide biased estimates and are not suitable for dry Afromontane forests in Ethiopia. The estimated stem biomass and carbon stock in the Chilimo forest are comparable with the estimates from various tropical forests and woodlands elsewhere in Africa, indicating the importance of dry Afromontane fores

First characterization of endophytic Corynespora cassiicola isolates with variant cassiicolin genes recovered from rubber trees in Brazil

Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of Corynespora Leaf Fall(CLF)*** is one of the most important fungal diseases of rubber trees in Asia and Africa but disease outbreaks have not been reported in South ***,a small cysteine-rich glycoprotein secreted by the pathogenic *** isolate CCP,was previously identified as a potential disease effector in rubber ***,the cassiicolin-encoding gene(Cas1)was characterized and shown to be expressed in the early phase of *** this study,we investigated whether previously undetected strains of *** are present in South American rubber plantations by examining the fungal endophyte population found in asymptomatic rubber tree *** isolates were identified as *** encoding new forms of the cassiicolin precursor protein(Cas3 and Cas4)were identified from these *** of four isolates were able to induce symptoms on the cultivar they were isolated from in a detached leaf assay,with different kinetics and *** isolate had the same pathogenicity profile as the pathogenic isolate CCP;the other two isolates developed symptoms late during the course of infection,suggesting saprotrophic ***,no Cas3 or Cas4 transcripts could be detected upon inoculation with the endophytic isolates,whereas the reference gene Cas1 was expressed upon inoculation with the CCP *** work demonstrated that *** is present in South America in an endophytic form and that it may evolve from an endophytic to a saprophytic or even potentially pathogenic life style.

Validation of the Trail Making Test B for the Cognitive Assessment of Patients with Cancer in Palliative Care

Introduction: Cognitive impairment is common in patients with cancer;however, studies examining the adaptation and validation of instruments for use in patients with cancer are scarce. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the Trail Making Test B (TMT-B) for use in patients with cancer. Methods: Ninety-four outpatients receiving palliative treatment and 39 healthy companions were assessed. Patients were tested with the TMT-B and answered questions regarding the presence and intensity of pain, fatigue, quality of sleep, anxiety, and depression, at two time points with a 7-day inter-assessment interval. Results: The instrument discriminated between patients, who were slower, and healthy companions with respect to the time required to complete the test, but not in terms of the number of errors. The test was stable for the healthy companions across the two assessments in terms of time to complete the TMT-B and the number of errors;for patients, the instrument was stable only for the number of errors. Performance on the TMT-B did not correlate with pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, or sensation of rest. Conclusions: TMT-B cannot be considered fully validated. Further studies incorporating and comparing other instruments evaluating executive function and mental flexibility are needed.
