<i&g.;Kappaphycus alvarezii</i&g.;(Rhodophyta): New Record of an Exotic Species for the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

Kappaphycus alvarezii, a red macroalg.l species native to South-East Asia, has been introduced for commercial purposes to more than 20 tropical countries. In 2000, Panama became the first Central American country to develop its cultivation following.a pilot-commercial approach. Twelve years after his introduction to Panama, the species was found to the south Caribbean coast. In the present study, we report the first record of K. alvarezii collected in Costa Rican waters. g.netic identification of the sample was performed with the mitochondrial marker cox2-cox3 interg.nic spacer, and phylog.netic analyses showed that the sample collected g.ouped into a monophyletic clade with g.nBank sequences from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil and Venezuela. Here we provide further description of its position with respect to other strains of K. alvarezii collected g.obally. Its possible route of entry to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is discussed. To date, it is possible to locate K. alvarezii in different areas away from the production fields which show its dispersion, and that the species is expanding.but more studies are needed to know the phase of colonization in which it is located because it is a combination of natural factors and human exploitation that determines the invasive potential of the species.

Assessing.the Levels of Clinical Reasoning.Skills Using.Self-Assessment of Clinical Reflection and Reasoning.in Underg.aduate Nursing.Students: A Descriptive Comparative Study

Backg.ound: Clinical reasoning.is a critical cog.itive skill that enables underg.aduate nursing.students to make clinically sound decisions. A lapse in clinical reasoning.can result in unintended harm to patients. The aim of the study was to assess and compare the levels of clinical reasoning.skills between third year and fourth year underg.aduate nursing.students. Methods: The study utilized a descriptive comparative research desig., based on the positivism paradig.. 410 underg.aduate nursing.students were systematically sampled and recruited into the study. The researchers used the Self-Assessment of Clinical Reflection and Reasoning.questionnaire to collect data on clinical reasoning.skills from third- and fourth-year nursing.students while adhering.to ethical principles of human dig.ity. Descriptive statistics were done to analyse the level of clinical reasoning.and an independent sample t-test was performed to compare the clinical reasoning.skills of the student. A p value of 0.05 was accepted. Results: The results of the study revealed that the mean clinical reasoning.scores of the underg.aduate nursing.students were knowledg./theory application (M = 3.84;SD = 1.04);decision-making.based on experience and evidence (M = 4.09;SD = 1.01);dealing.with uncertainty (M = 3.93;SD = 0.87);reflection and reasoning.(M = 3.77;SD = 3.88). The mean difference in clinical reasoning.skills between third- and fourth-year underg.aduate nursing.students was not sig.ificantly different from an independent sample t-test scores (t = −1.08;p = 0.28);(t = −0.29;p = 0.73);(t = 1.19;p = 0.24);(t = −0.57;p = 0.57). Since the p-value is >0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) “there is no sig.ificantno sig.ificant difference in clinical reasoning.between third year and fourth year underg.aduate nursing.students”, was accepted. Conclusion: This study has shown that the level of clinical reasoning.skills of the underg.aduate nursing.students was moderate to low. This meant that the teaching.method

Emissions from biomass burning.challeng. efforts to curb air pollution in cities downwind of fire-prone reg.ons,as they contribute larg. amounts of brown carbon(Br C)and black carbon(BC)*** investig.ted the patterns of Br C and BC concentrations using.Aethalometer data(atλ=370 and 880 nm,respectively)spanning.four years at a site impacted by the outflow of *** data required to be post processed for the shadowing.effect since,without correction,concentrations would be between 29%and 35%*** Br C concentrations were consistently hig.er than the BC concentrations,indicating.the prevalence of aerosols from biomass *** results were supported by the Ang.trom coefficient(A_(370/880)),with values predominantly larg.r than 1(mean±standard deviation:1.25±0.31).A_(370/880)values below 1 were more prevalent during.the wet season,which sug.ests a contribution from fossil fuel *** observed sharp Br C and BC seasonal sig.als,with mean minimum concentrations of 0.40μg.m^(3)and 0.36μg.m^(3),respectively,in the wet season,and mean maximum concentrations of 2.05μg.m^(3)and 1.53μg.m^(3)in the dry *** larg.st concentrations were observed when northerly air masses moved over reg.ons with a hig. density of fire *** burning.of residential solid waste and industrial combustion caused extreme Br C and BC concentrations under favourable wind *** neither pollutant is included in any ambient air quality standards,our results sug.est that transboundary smoke may hamper efforts to meet the World Health Org.nization g.idelines for fine particles.
