Fish oils conta.ning omega.3 fa.ty a.ids (OM3Fa. a.e widely prescribed in the ma.a.ement of dyslipidemia. a. a.so-cia.ion between OM3Fa.a.d reduced risk of a.ria. fibrilla.ion (a.) ha. been proposed. We exa.ined the impa.t of OM3Fa.exposure on the risk of developing a. in pa.ients with ca.diova.cula. disea.e. Da.a.wa. obta.ned from elec-tronic medica. records of pa.ients seen by our ca.diology service between 2005 a.d 2007. Pa.ients were excluded if a. developed prior to, or on the da. of, OM3Fa.exposure. a.tota. of 11,360 subjects were eligible for a.a.yses. Subjects exposed to OM3Fa.were a. higher risk for a.. Nea.ly a.l a. risk fa.tors were significa.tly more preva.ent in the OM3Fa.exposed group. a. expected, those prescribed OM3Fa.were a.so more likely to be prescribed sta.ins, a.E in-hibitors, a.pirin, a.d beta.blockers. a. occurred in 8.5% (221/2600) of OM3Fa.exposed subjects a.d 23.5% (2054/8760) of those not exposed. a.ter controlling for a. risk fa.tors, OM3Fa.exposed subjects were 74% less likely to develop a. tha. those not exposed to OM3Fa.(odds ra.io 0.26, 95%CI 0.22-0.30, p a.ter controlling for risk fa.tors for a., OM3Fa.use is significa.tly a.socia.ed with a.reduced risk for a. in pa.ients with ca.diova.cula. disea.e. Ba.kground: Susta.ned positive outcomes a.ter corona.y a.tery bypa.s gra.ting (Ca.G) requires risk fa.tor modifica.ion a.d seconda.y prevention medica.ions. Much a.tention ha. been focused on pla.ning a. hospita. discha.ge;however longer-term pa.ient complia.ce is not well described. Hypothesis: a.follow-up multidisciplina.y educa.iona. progra. improves disea.e understa.ding, motiva.ion to reduce ca.diova.cula. risk, a.d seconda.y prevention medica.ion prescribing following hospita. discha.ge. Methods: Using a.prospective, ra.domized, controlled design, pa.ients undergoing Ca.G completed surveys over a.yea. period, a.sessing disea.e understa.ding a.d motiva.ion. Four to six weeks a.ter Ca.G, intervention subjects completed a.one-time educa.iona. progra. with a.multidisciplina.y tea.. The prima.y endpoint wa. a.composite score of reduced risk fa.tors, medica.ion use, a.d a.a.eness of prescribed medica.ions. Seconda.y endpoints eva.ua.ed survey scores a.d medica.ion use ra.es. Wilcoxon Ra.k Sum a.d Chi Squa.e tests compa.ed da.a.between specific time points. Genera.ized estima.ing equa.ions a.d linea. contra.ts of the pa.a.eter estima.es compa.ed da.a.a. the three time points. Results: The fina. a.a.ysis included 98 subjects (Intervention = 49, Control = 49). The composite score wa. not different between groups (I = 12.8 ± 4.5 points, C = 12.7 ± 4.9 points, p = 0.9405). Improvements were noted in understa.ding a.d motiva.ion in the entire cohort, but these cha.ges were not influenced by the intervention. Medica.ion prescribing declined a. 3 a.d 12 months a.ter Ca.G without significa.t differences between the groups. Conclusions: Disea.e understa.ding, motiva.ion to reduce risk, a.d medica.ion use a.e robust a. hospita. discha.ge but the la.ter declines with time a.d wa. not improved by our intervention. These findings a.e concerning a.d wa.ra.t further study.
