Influence of the M and M’Metals on the Carbides Population in As-Cast M’-based Alloys Designed to be MC-Strengthened

High temperature applications such as turbine blades for aeronautics or molten glass-shaping tools require the use of refractory metallic *** the later ones,cast superalloys based on some transition metals and reinforced by MC carbides stay in good place and their metallurgy merits to be well *** work consists in a general exploration of the as-cast microstructures which can be obtained after solidification and solid state cooling down to ambient temperature for a wide series of alloys for which the base element and the MC-former element both *** fixed contents in chromium and carbon contents,the compositions of a total of nineteen alloys were *** alloys are based on Ni,Co,Fe or Nb and the M content was each time chosen to favor the appearance of TiC,TaC,NbC,HfC or ZrC,as single carbide in a given *** elaboration,metallographic samples were observed by electron microscopy to investigate the obtained *** obtained results show first that the MC carbides were in many cases successfully obtained at the expense of other possible carbides(for all Co-based alloys for example)but there are also several exceptions(notably for some Nibased alloys).Second,the obtained monocarbides have a eutectic origin and they are script-liked *** they are here too some exceptions,as the rare HfC obtained in a Nb-base).In general,the results obtained in this work show that the principle of dendritic matrix combined with MC carbides with a script-like morphology is not necessarily obtained:the nature of the{base element,MC-former element}combination governs the microstructure of the alloy in its as-cast state for these particular compositions in chromium and *** some cases other carbides may appear and the microstructures may be even of another type.

Human sperm quality and lipid content after migration into normal ovulatory human cervical mucus containing low numbers of leukocytes

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between the presence of low numbers of leukocytes in normal ovulatory cervical mucus and sperm quality and lipid content after migration. The percentages of live, motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa, movement parameters assessed by computer-aided sperm analysis （CASA）, and ionophore-induced acrosome reaction measured by flow cytometry were determined before and after migration. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was used to measure the sperm lipid content, including the various diacyl subspecies. The number of leukocytes found in solubilized mucus samples was counted using a haemocytometric method. Overall, the presence of leukocytes in the cervical mucus samples did not significantly influence sperm motility and morphology, sperm kinematic parameters, or the sperm content in sphingomyelin or cholesterol. In contrast, after migration, the decrease in various sperm diacyls and the level of induced acrosome reaction was significantly less pronounced in mucus samples containing ≥10^4 leukocytes than in mucus samples with no or rare leukocytes whereas the level of induced acrosome reaction was higher. The present data suggest that the low level of leukocytes found in normal ovulatory cervical mucus could influence the process of sperm lipid remodelling/capacitation.

The nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) transcriptionfactor coordinates several aspects of innate and adaptiveimmunity, inflammation, cell survival and proliferation [1,2]. Dysregulation of the NF-κB pathway has been associ-ated with cancer development and progression as well aswith other human diseases including viral infections anda number of inflammatory diseases [1]. NF-κB is formedthrough the dimerization of 5 subunits, including membersof the Rel protein family, namely RelA (p65), c-Rel, RelB,NF-κB1 (p50 and its precursor p105) and NF-κB2 (p52and its precursor p 100). Two pathways are involved in theactivation of NF-κB. In both these pathways, kinase activityand proteasome activity play a major role in freeing NF-κBfrom cytoplasmic inhibitors to promote its nuclear translo-cation and activation. The classical or canonical pathwayis activated by a large range of stimuli (microbial and viralinfections, proinflammatory cytokines). In this pathway,NF-κB dimers, mostly p50/RelA and p50/c-Rel, are usuallyretained in the cytoplasm by their interaction with specificinhibitors, called IκBs. Co-evolution of host-parasitoid interactions is determined by the costs of host resistance, which received empirical evidence, and the costs ofparasitoid virulence, which have been mostly hypothesized. Asobara tabida is a parasitoid, which mainly parasitizes Drosophila melanogaster and D. subobscura, the first species being able to resist to the parasitoid development while the second species is not. To parasitize resistant hosts, including D. melanogaster, A. tabida develops sticky eggs, which prevent encapsulation, but this virulence mechanism may be costly. Interindividual and interpopulation variation in the proportion of sticky eggs respectively allowed us to （i） artificially select and compare life-history traits of a virulent and a nonvirulent laboratory strain, and （ii） compare a virulent and a nonvirulent field strain, to investigate the hypothetical costs of virulence. We observed strong differences between the 2 laboratory strains. The nonvirulent strain invested fewer resources in reproduction and walked less than the virulent one but lived longer. Concerning the field strains, we observed that the nonvirulent strain had larger wings while the virulent one walked more and faster. All together, our results suggest that virulence may not always be costly, but rather that different life histories associated with different levels of virulence may coexist at both intra- and interDoDulation levels.

Development and validation of a thermally regulated atmospheric simulation chamber(THALAMOS): A versatile tool to simulate atmospheric processes

Atmospheric simulation chambers,are unique tools for investigating atmospheric processes in the gas and heterogeneous *** can provide a controlled yet realistic environment that simulates atmospheric *** the current study,a Teflon atmospheric simulation chamber of 600 L,named THALAMOS(thermally regulated atmospheric simulation chamber) has been developed and *** can be operated over the temperature range 233 to 373 K under both static and flow *** is equipped with state of the art instrumentation(selective ion flow tube mass spectrometry(SIFT-MS),long path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),various analyzers) for the in-line monitoring of both reactants and *** was validated by measuring the rate coefficients of well documented reactions,*** reaction of ethanol with OH radicals and the reaction of dichloromethane with Cl atoms,in a wide temperature *** different detection techniques were used in parallel,FTIR and SIFT-MS,to internally cross-validate the obtained *** measured rate coefficients are in excellent agreement,both between each other and with the literature recommended ***,the gas phase oxidation of toluene by Cl atoms(kinetics and product yields) was studied in the temperature range of 253 to 333 *** the best of our knowledge,THALAMOS is a unique facility on national level and among a few smog chambers internationally that can be operated in such a wide temperature range providing the scientific community with a versatile tool to simulate both outdoor and indoor physicochemical processes.
