Integrated Sequential Groundwater Contaminant Source Characterization and Pareto-Optimal Monitoring Network Design Application for a Contaminated Aquifer Site

Accurate and reliable groundwater contaminant source characterization with limited contaminant concentration monitoring measurement data remains a challenging problem. This study presents an illustrative application of developed methodologies to a real-life contaminated aquifer. The source characterization and optimal monitoring network design methodologies are used sequentially for a contaminated aquifer site located in New South Wales, Australia. Performance of the integrated optimal source characterization methodology combining linked simulation-optimization, fractal singularity mapping technique (FSMT) and Pareto optimal solutions is evaluated. This study presents an integrated application of optimal source characterization with spatiotemporal concentration measurement data obtained from sequentially designed monitoring networks. The proposed sequential source characterization and monitoring network design methodology shows efficiency in identifying the unknown source characteristics. The designed monitoring network achieves comparable efficiency and accuracy utilizing much smaller number of monitoring locations as compared to a more ideal scenario where concentration measurements from a very large number of widespread monitoring wells are available. The proposed methodology is potentially useful for efficient characterization of unknown contaminant sources in a complex contaminated aquifer site, where very little initial concentration measurement data are available. The illustrative application of the methodology to a real-life contaminated aquifer site demonstrates the capability and efficiency of the proposed methodology.

In this paper,waste clay was cured with ethyl acetate to obtain treated clay(TC),which was modified with gallic acid to obtain a low-cost sorbent that was characterized by EDX,SEM,and FTIR ***(Ⅵ)adsorption was achieved using the batch adsorption method on the TC and gallic acid-modified treated clay(GMTC).The maximum uptakes of U(Ⅵ)on TC and GMTC were 37.2 and 193.0 mg/g,*** U(Ⅵ)adsorption kinetics on the TC and GMTC sorbents were well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order mechanism,and the adsorption equilibrium followed the Langmuir *** optimum parameters were applied to El Sela leach solution for uranium recovery.

Investigating Transgenic Corn Hybrids as a Method for Mycotoxin Control

Transgenic Bt corn hybrids have been available for more than 10 years and are known to control specific insects. More recently, so-called “stacked-gene” hybrids, have been released with multiple insect resistance genes and genes for herbicide resistance, resulting in up to 6 traits per plant. Because insect damage can lead to increased levels of mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins and fumonisin, we designed a study to compare ten commercially available corn hybrids, two non-transgenic, four with both herbicide and insect tolerance (stacked-gene) and four with glyphosate tolerance only to determine if any hybrid class had the advantage of reduced mycotoxin contamination. The experiment was carried out in the Mississippi State University Delta Research Extension fields in Stoneville, MS for two years in fine sandy loam and clay soil. Rows were either inoculated at the V10 stage of growth with toxigenic Aspergillus flavus k54 (NRRL 58987, isolated from corn kernels in Mississippi), grown on wheat, and applied at a rate of 22.42 kg/ha or allowed to become naturally infected with disease-producing fungi, including various Fusarium and other Aspergillus spp. Mycotoxin production differed according to the soil type with lower levels detected in the hybrids planted in clay soil vs. sandy soil. However, no significant differences in mycotoxin production were found amongst the hybrid classes. More research is needed to identify conditions under which transgenic hybrids might produce higher yields and lower mycotoxin levels. Presently, selection of transgenic hybrids will not replace integrated strategies of biocontrol, host plant resistance, or good crop management practices for achieving adequate mycotoxin control in corn.

Modeling and optimization of cooling slope process parameters for semi-solid casting of A356 Al alloy

Semi-solid processing （SSP） of A356 aluminum alloy was discussed via cooling slope （CS） method. The D-optimal design of experiment （DODE） was employed for experimental design and analysis of results. 38 random experiments obtained by software were carried out. In experimental stage, the molten aluminum alloy was poured on an inclined plate with different lengths of 100, 300 and 500 mm set at 30°, 45° and 60° of slope angles respectively. Three different pouring temperatures of 660, 680 and 700 ℃ were also used. After the casting process, the partial re-melting treatment was carried out at 590 ℃ for different isothermal time of 5, 8 or 12 min. The combined effect of these factors on globularity of the primary α（Al） crystals was investigated and optimized using DODE. The results indicated that the primary dendritic phase in the conventionally cast A356 alloy was transformed into a non-dendritic one in ingots cast over a cooling plate. The CS processed samples exhibited a globular structure only after re-heating to semi-solid region. The optimum values of pouring temperature, cooling length, slope angle and isothermal holding time were found to be 660 ℃, 360 mm, 48°, and 9 min, respectively. In this case, the globularity of primary crystals was obtained, about 0.91. The obtained model is highly significant with a correlation coefficient of 0.9860.

Linking a Simulated Annealing Based Optimization Model with PHT3D Simulation Model for Chemically Reactive Transport Processes to Optimally Characterize Unknown Contaminant Sources in a Former Mine Site in Australia

Historical mining activities often lead to continuing wide spread contaminants in both groundwater and surface water in previously operational mine site areas. The contamination may continue for many years after closing down the mining activities. The essential first step for sustainable management of groundwater and development of remediation strategies is the unknown contaminant source characterization. In a mining site, there are multiple species of contaminants involving complex geochemical processes. It is difficult to identify the potential sources and pathways incorporating the chemically reactive multiple species of contaminants making the source characterization process more challenging. To address this issue, a reactive transport simulation model PHT3D is linked to a Simulated Annealing based the optimum decision model. The numerical simulation model PHT3D is utilized for numerically simulating the reactive transport process involving multiple species in the former mine site area. The simulation results from the calibrated PHT3D model are illustrated, with and without incorporating the chemical reactions. These comparisons show the utility of using a reactive, geochemical transport process’ simulation model. Performance evaluation of the linked simulation optimization methodology is evaluated for a contamination scenario in a former mine site in Queensland, Australia. These performance evaluation results illustrate the applicability of linked simulation optimization model to identify the source characteristics while using PHT3D as a numerical reactive chemical species’ transport simulation model for the hydro-geochemically complex aquifer study area.

Failure mode and effects analysis （FMEA） offers a quick and easy way for identifying ranking-order for all failure modes in a system or a product. In FMEA the ranking methods is so called risk priority number （RPN）, which is a mathematical product of severity （S）, occurrence （0）, and detection （D）. One of major disadvantages of this ranking-order is that the failure mode with different combination of SODs may generate same RPN resulting in difficult decision-making. Another shortfall of FMEA is lacking of discerning contribution factors, which lead to insufficient information about scaling of improving effort. Through data envelopment analysis （DEA） technique and its extension, the proposed approach evolves the current rankings for failure modes by exclusively investigating SOD in lieu of RPN and to furnish with improving *** for SOD. The purpose of present study is to propose a state-of-the-art new approach to enhance assessment capabilities of failure mode and effects analysis （FMEA）. The paper proposes a state-of-the-art new approach, robust, structured and useful in practice, for failure analysis.

Application of Surface Water Quality Classification Models Using Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis

Water quality monitoring has one of the highest priorities in surface water protection policy. Many variety approaches are being used to interpret and analyze the concealed variables that determine the variance of observed water quality of various source points. A considerable proportion of these approaches are mainly based on statistical methods, multivariate statistical techniques in particular. In the present study, the use of multivariate techniques is required to reduce the large variables number of Nile River water quality upstream Cairo Drinking Water Plants (CDWPs) and determination of relationships among them for easy and robust evaluation. By means of multivariate statistics of principal components analysis (PCA), Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and k-means algorithm for clustering analysis, this study attempted to determine the major dominant factors responsible for the variations of Nile River water quality upstream Cairo Drinking Water Plants (CDWPs). Furthermore, cluster analysis classified 21 sampling stations into three clusters based on similarities of water quality features. The result of PCA shows that 6 principal components contain the key variables and account for 75.82% of total variance of the study area surface water quality and the dominant water quality parameters were: Conductivity, Iron, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Coliform (TC), Ammonia (NH3), and pH. However, the results from both of FCM clustering and k-means algorithm, based on the dominant parameters concentrations, determined 3 cluster groups and produced cluster centers (prototypes). Based on clustering classification, a noted water quality deteriorating as the cluster number increased from 1 to 3. However the cluster grouping can be used to identify the physical, chemical and biological processes creating the variations in the water quality parameters.
