Cell-based therapeutic strategies for treatment of spinocerebellar ataxias:an update

Brain Abscess after COVID-19: Case Report

As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, complications and unusual presentations of the disease have been described. Among them, the involvement of distinct parts of the neuroaxis. We report a rare case of brain abscess in elderly after SARS-Cov-2 infection readmitted in our health unit. Patient was treated with ceftriaxone, metronidazole and vancomycin with good clinical and therapeutic response. The satisfactory conduct of the case was only possible by the involvement of a multiprofessional team, which sought early diagnosis, surgical intervention and adequate duration of treatment.

Valorization of the agro-industrial by-products of bacupari(Garcinia brasiliensis(Mart.))through production of flour with bioactive properties

Brazil has a wide variety of fruits that remain insufficiently *** encourage the use of one such fruit,the bacupari((Garcinia brasiliensis(Mart.)),the current study produced flours from its by-products(the peel and seed)at two maturation stages and subsequently evaluated their proximate composition,physical,antioxidant,bioactive,microstructural and thermal *** results revealed that the flours have a high in fiber content(>15%)and are a potential source of protein(>5%).Seed flour has an energy value similar to that of wheat flour and other conventional *** flour micrographs indicate the presence of starch,a fact confirmed by viscosity *** flours contain phenolic compounds and exhibit antioxidant activity,especially the unripe peel *** the compounds identified by chromatography,those present in the greatest concentrations were quinine(≅111μg/g),p-coumaric acid(≅25μg/g),m-coumaric acid(≅15μg/g),and formononetin(≅21μg/g),all of which are known to have several human health *** flour crystallinity diminished as the fruit *** flour exhibited similar thermal transitions but less thermal stability than seed *** summary,this study revealed that flours produced from the peel and seeds of bacupari,which are generated in large quantities as agro-industrial by-products,can be used as alternative ingredients in various sectors of the food industry.

Plant-based pecan nut cake beverage enrichment of phytochemicals and antioxidant properties using multi-stage block freeze concentration

Pecan nut (Carya illinoinensis) processing to obtain oil generates circa 37% of press cake, which is currently underuti-lized and primarily employed as animal feed. Due to its nutritional- and bioactive-rich composition, pecan nut cake (PNC) can be used as raw material for plant-based beverages, whose properties may be enhanced using a non-ther-mal technology based on block freeze concentration (BFC). The effect of five-stage BFC on total solids content (TSC), pH, color parameters, retention of phytochemicals, and the antioxidant activity (AA) of a pecan nut cake beverage (PNB) was assessed in this work. BFC afforded 98% (w/w) solids retention after three stages and 85% efficiency after four stages. The process also provided a 254% concentration factor in stage 5. In the last step, approximately a 64% increase in TSC and a slight decrease (7.3%) in pH compared to the control PNB was observed. In addition, total phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, total flavonols, and AA were significantly (P < 0.05) improved after the BFC, resulting in a 2.6-10.2- and 1.9-5.8-fold increase in phytochemicals and antioxidants, respectively. On the other hand, BFC caused the darkening of concentrates due to TSC and bioactive compounds retention. The processing strategy evaluated herein indicated a great potential of PNC as a raw material for obtaining high-quality ingredients for the food industry, which may reduce agro-industrial waste production and add value to a coproduct rich in nutrients and biocompounds with potential biological activity.

This paper studies ten Chinese coals at different ranks by means of cross polarization and magic angle spinning, combined rotation and multiple-pulse spectroscopy, and dynamic nuclear polarization. NMR is first reported. It is found that, compared with those obtained previously coat somples from other parts of the world, some Chinese coals at lower ranks display unusual characteristics, which imply peculiar chemical structures in the coals.

AIM:To investigate the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPTiO 2 ) and microparticles (MPTiO 2 ) on the inflammatory response in the small intestine of mice. METHODS: Bl 57/6 male mice received distilled water suspensions containing TiO 2 (100 mg/kg body weight) as NPTiO 2 (66 nm), or MPTiO 2 (260 nm) by gavage for 10 d, once a day; the control group received only distilled water. At the end of the treatment the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were extracted for assessment of cytokines, inflammatory cells and titanium content. The cytokines interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17, IL-23, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), intracellular interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in segments of jejunum and ileum (mucosa and underlying muscular tissue). CD4 + and CD8 + T cells, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells were evaluated in duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples fixed in 10% formalin by immuno-histochemistry. The titanium content was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. RESULTS: We found increased levels of T CD4 + cells (cells/mm 2 ) in duodenum:NP 1240 ± 139.4, MP 1070 ± 154.7 vs 458 ± 50.39 (P < 0.01); jejunum:NP 908.4 ± 130.3, MP 813.8 ± 103.8 vs 526.6 ± 61.43 (P < 0.05); and ileum:NP 818.60 ± 123.0, MP 640.1 ± 32.75 vs 466.9 ± 22.4 (P < 0.05). In comparison to the control group, the groups receiving TiO 2 showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-12, IL-4, IL-23, TNF-α, IFN-γ and TGF-β. Dear Editor,Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus(MPXV),a double-stranded DNA virus in the genus Orthopoxvirus,family *** is known to be transmitted between animals such as rats and squirrels,but animal-to-human and human-to-human transmission has been known in Africa since *** is linked to direct contact with body fluids,skin lesions,and patient items as well as respiratory droplets in case of prolonged face-to-face contact[1].Until recently,only a few cases were associated with travel to endemic countries or contact with infected animals imported from endemic countries.

A Semiotic Analysis of Programming Languages

The paper presents an analysis of computer programming languages based on the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce. The author describes how such languages could evolve in order to achieve some of the expressive characteristics of natural languages. This description evinces otherwise unnoticed differences between natural languages and programming languages, showing that Peircean semiotics is an efficient analysis tool. This suggests further research on the technical features needed to implement an easier way to program computers.

Helicobacter pylori infection: Host immune response, implications on gene expression and microRNAs

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection is the most common bacterial infection worldwide. Persistent infection of the gastric mucosa leads to inflammatory processes and may remain silent for decades or progress causing more severe diseases, such as gastric adenocarcinoma. The clinical consequences of H. pylori infection are determined by multiple factors, including host genetic predisposition, gene regulation, environmental factors and heterogeneity of H. pylori virulence factors. After decades of studies of this successful relationship between pathogen and human host, various mechanisms have been elucidated. In this review, we have made an introduction on H. pylori infection and its virulence factors, and focused mainly on modulation of host immune response triggered by bacteria, changes in the pattern of gene expression in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa, with activation of gene transcription involved in defense mechanisms, inflammatory and immunological response, cell proliferation and apoptosis. We also highlighted the role of bacteria eradication on gene expression levels. In addition, we addressed the recent involvement of different microRNAs in precancerous lesions, gastric cancer, and inflammatory processes induced by bacteria. New discoveries in this field may allow a better understanding of the role of major factors involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of H. pylori.

Characterization of Fruits in Contrasting Environments and Germination of Tamarillo Seeds at Different Temperatures

Tamarillo (Solanum betaceum Cav. Syn Cyphomandra betacea Cav.) Sendt is a small tree native to the subtropical Andean region of South America from Colombia to Chile, popularly known as arboreal tomato, belonging to the family Solanaceae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of fruits and the germination of tamarillo (Solanum betaceum) seeds produced in the Caparaó-ES and MG regions. The following procedures were performed: Fruit and peel biometrics;fruit weight;pulp and peel weight;thousand-seed weight, pulp and peel yield and fruit dry mass. In the physicochemical analysis, the following parameters were determined: pH;soluble solids;titratable acidity and ratio. For the analysis of the physiological quality of the seeds, different temperatures (20°C;25°C;30°C and 20°C - 30°C) were evaluated in the presence and absence of light and the following was determined: Seed moisture content;germination;germination speed index;germination mean time;shoot length;root and total seedling dry mass. Tamarillo in the region of Caparaó-ES presents greater chemical characteristics of the fruits, germination and vigor, and in the region of Caparaó-MG presents greater physical characteristics of the fruits. Tamarillo can germinate both in the presence and absence of light, although in the presence of light, it presents greater vigor.
