Motivations for and barriers to innovation in non-profit organizations: The case of nursing homes in Northern Portugal

To contribute to the empirical literature on innovation in non-profit organizations,this study examines innovation in Private Social Solidarity Institutions with social responses for the elderly in Northern *** enriches the literature by clarifying the concept of innovation applied to non-profit organizations,which represents a perspective different from the business ***,it is important to support the innovation decisionmaking process in similar non-profit *** this study,the population was surveyed through questionnaires based on the PUBLIN research project,which has already been applied in different countries,and the targets were employees of organizations with social responses for the *** sample is small,with 28 respondent institutions and 51 employees,but it is representative,as it includes institutions from all districts in Northern *** study employed a quantitative approach,particularly factor analysis,multiple linear regression,and correlation analyses,using scales already applied in other dimensions of the social sector,to understand the effect of each innovation dimension/determinant on creativity and innovation in nonprofit *** results show that in these organizations with social responses for the elderly,learning orientation,risk-taking,and job satisfaction have a positive impact on innovation.

Obesity is a significant and escalating health issue both in Brazil and globally, with over 650 million overweight adults worldwide. The treatment of obesity can be performed clinically, endoscopically or surgically;surgical treatment proves to be safe and more effective in terms of weight loss and long-term maintenance. Objective: This study aimed to monitor the progress of weight loss and comorbidity control in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy with duodenal bipartition. Methods: This pilot project involved 8 patients divided into 2 arms. In the first arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenoileal transit bipartition (S-RYDITB), while in the second arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenojejunal transit bipartition (S-RYDJTB). Both procedures involved Roux-en-Y reconstruction without duodenal exclusion. In S-RYDITB, the duodenal-ileal anastomosis was performed 300 cm from the ileocecal valve (ICV), creating a 250 cm common channel and a 50 cm alimentary channel. In S-RYDJTB, a biliopancreatic loop was created 200 cm from the angle of Treitz, with a 1 m alimentary channel. Results: Five patients underwent the procedures, with one undergoing S-RYDITB and four undergoing S-RYDJTB. No adverse events such as hospitalizations, readmissions, reoperations, fistulas, bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diarrhea, dumping syndrome, or hypoglycemia occurred during the study period. The mean length of hospital stay was 2 days. The average BMI decreased from 37.27 kg/m2 preoperatively to 29.48 kg/m2 after 6 months. The significant percentage of weight loss was 21.22%, with excess weight loss of 63.6%. Ninety-five percent remission of comorbidities, including hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, hypertension, steatosis, and pre-diabetes. The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

Characterization and Modification of a Clay Mineral Used in Adsorption Tests

Clay minerals are widespread in natural systems and have been widely used for the removal of pollutants. In this study, natural expanded vermiculite was used in adsorption tests to remove ammonium nitrogen from landfill leachate. The modification of vermiculite was carried out using NaOH and HCl, and for both modifications the best concentration was 0.1 mol/L. The results produced by XRD (X-ray diffraction) showed that Al replaced K after modification of the vermiculite using HCl and that Mg and Na replaced K after modification using NaOH. It was observed that the adsorption capacity increased as the percentage in mass of K diminished. The Langmuir is the isotherm that presents the best fit of the data, and the values of RL (the Langmuir coefficient) suggest that the adsorption is linear. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the process is spontaneous and endothermic, that there is a high affinity between the adsorbate and the adsorbent, and that physical adsorption is prevalent.

With the recent trends in urban agriculture and climate change,there is an emerging need for alternative plant culture techniques where dependence on soil can be *** and aquaponic growth techniques have proven to be viable alternatives,but the lack of efficient and optimal practices for irrigation and nutrient supply limits its applications on a large-scale commercial *** main purpose of this research was to develop statistical methods and Machine Learning algorithms to regulate nutrient concentrations in aquaponic irrigation water based on plant needs,for achieving optimal plant growth and promoting broader adoption of aquaponic culture on a commercial *** of the key challenges to developing these algorithms is the sparsity of data which requires the use of Bolstered error estimation *** this paper,several linear and non-linear algorithms trained on relatively small datasets using Bolstered error estimation techniques were evaluated,for selecting the best method in making decisions regarding the regulation of nutrients in hydroponic *** repeated tests on the dataset,it was decided that Semi-Bolstered Resubstitution Error estimation technique works best in our case using Linear Support Vector Machine as the classifier with the value of penalty parameter set to one.A set of recommended rules have been prescribed as a Decision Support System,using the output of the Machine Learning algorithm,which have been tested against the results of the baseline ***,the positive impact of the recommended nutrient concentrationson plant growth in aquaponic environments has been elaborately discussed.

Hematopoietic tumors are associated with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and a poor prognosis. Furthermore, their pathophysiology in dogs is not well understood. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia has been rarely reported in golden retrievers, perhaps due to difficulties in diagnosis and care. An 8-year-old spayed female golden retriever was referred to our hospital with a 2-month history of fatigue, weakness, and selective appetite. The dog was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia based on blood smear evaluation. Despite treatment, the dog deteriorated and the owners opted for euthanasia. Histopathological examination revealed atypical lymphocytes in the spleen, extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen and liver, bone marrow depletion, moderate neutrophilic myocarditis, and acute renal tubular necrosis. In an immunohistochemical panel, cells in the spleen and bone marrow were positive for anti-CD20, anti-CD45, anti-CD3, anti-IBA-1, anti-Ki67, anti-MUM-1, and anti-PAX-5. In conclusion, the leukemia diagnosis was confirmed through reactive histiocytosis, marked extramedullary hematopoiesis, and other clinical and laboratory findings. Herein, we report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in a female dog with clinical, laboratory, and necroscopy findings.
