Lung Hyperinflation Is Associated with pulmonary Exacerbations in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis

Background: Forced expiratory volume 1 second (FEV1) has traditionally been used as a readily available marker of health in adult cystic fibrosis (CF). However, due to the obstructive nature of this disease, it is possible that lung hyperinflation could be more closely related to disease severity than is FEV1. The purpose of this study was to determine if hyperinflation is more closely associated with quality of life, functional status, and pulmonary exacerbations than FEV1 in patients with CF. Methods: Sixty-eight adult patients with CF were evaluated in this retrospective study. We used IC and functional residual capacity (FRC) and their ratios to total lung capacity (TLC) as measures of lung hyperinflation. We used bivariate correlations and backwards regression analysis to assess possible associations between FEV1, lung hyperinflation, and measures of disease severity including questionnaire based quality of life, pulmonary exacerbation frequency, and mortality. The respiratory component of the Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire–Revised (CRQ-R-Respiratory) was used as a measure of quality of life. Results: Both FEV1 and IC were negatively correlated with pulmonary exacerbations over a 3 year period (p = 0.004, r2 = 0.127;p pectively), while FRC/TLC correlated positively with exacerbations (p = 0.007). Backwards regression analysis showed that among pulmonary function variables, IC had the strongest relationship with exacerbations over 3 years. A lower CFQ-R-Respiratory score was associated with greater mortality (p = 0.005). However, no statistically significant relationships were found between lung function and mortality. Conclusions: FEV1 and lung hyperinflation-as measured by IC and FRC/TLC-are both associated with pulmonary exacerbation frequency. This suggests that chronic dynamic hyperinflation contributes significantly to disease severity in adult cystic fibrosis.

Soil and water conservation measures improve soil carbon sequestration and soil quality under cashews

Land degradation is becoming a serious problem in the west coast region of India where one of the world’s eight biodiversity hotspots, the ‘Western Ghats’, is present. poor land management practices and high rainfall have led to increasing problems associated with land degradation. A long-term(13-year)experiment was done to evaluate the impact of soil and water conservation measures on soil carbon sequestration and soil quality at three different depths under cashew nut cultivation on a 19% slope. Five soil and water conservation measures-continuous contour trenches, staggered contour trenches, halfmoon terraces, semi-elliptical trenches, and graded trenches all with vegetative barriers of Stylosanthes scabra and Vetiveria zizanoides and control were evaluated for their influence on soil properties,carbon sequestration, and soil quality under cashews. The soil and water conservation measures improved significantly the soil organic carbon, soil organic carbon stock, carbon sequestration rate and microbial activity compared to the control condition(without any measures). Among the measures tested, continuous contour trenches with vegetative barriers outperformed the others with respect to soil organic carbon stock, sequestration rate, and microbial activity. The lower metabolic quotient with the measures compared to the control indicated alleviation of environmental stress on microbes. Using principal component analysis and a correlation matrix, a minimum dataset was identified as the soil available nitrogen, bulk density, basal soil respiration, soil p H, acid phosphatase activity, and soil available boron and these were the most important soil properties controlling the soil quality. The surface of the Moon is highly cratered due to impacts of meteorites, asteroids, comets and other celestial objects. The origin, size, structure, age and composition vary among craters. We study a total of 339 craters observed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera （LROC）. Out of these 339 craters, 214 craters are known （named craters included in the IAU Gazetteer of planetary Nomenclature） and 125 craters are unknown （craters that are not named and objects that are absent in the IAU Gazetteer）. We employ images taken by LROC at the North and South poles and near side of the Moon. We report for the first time the study of unknown craters, while we also review the study of known craters conducted earlier by previous researchers. Our study is focused on measurements of diameter, depth, latitude and longitude of each crater for both known and unknown craters. The diameter measurements are based on considering the Moon to be a spherical body. The LROC website also provides a plot which enables us to measure the depth and diameter. We found that out of 214 known craters, 161 craters follow a linear relationship between depth （d） and diameter （D）, but 53 craters do not follow this linear relationship. We study physical dimensions of these 53 craters and found that either the depth does not change significantly with diameter or the depths are extremely high relative to diameter （conical）. Similarly, out of 125 unknown craters, 78 craters follow the linear relationship between depth （d） and diameter （D） but 47 craters do not follow the linear relationship. We propose that the craters following the scaling law of depth and diameter, also popularly known as the linear relationship between d and D, are formed by the impact of meteorites having heavy metals with larger dimension, while those with larger diameter but less depth are formed by meteorites/celestial objects having low density material but larger diameter. The bulk properties of materials in an extreme environment such as high temperature and high pressure can be understood by studying anharmonic effects due to the vibration of lattice ions and thermally excited *** this spirit,in the present paper,anharmonic effects are studied by using the recently proposed mean-field potential（MFp） approach and Mermin functional which arise due to the vibration of lattice ions and thermally excited electrons,*** MFp experienced by a wanderer atom in the presence of surrounding atoms is constructed in terms of cold energy using the local form of the *** have calculated the temperature variation of several thermophysical properties in an extreme environment up to melting *** results of our calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings as well as the theoretical results obtained by using first principle *** conclude that presently used conjunction scheme（MFp＋pseudo potential） is simple computationally,transparent physically,and accurate in the sense that the results generated are comparable and sometimes better than the results obtained by first principle *** pseudopotential used is transferable to extreme environment without adjusting its parameters.

A four parameter cubic equation of state with temperature dependent covolume parameter

A four-parameter, Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 2 cubic equation of state(GDN2 CEOS), is presented which incorporates the following: 1. The experimental value of the critical compressibility factor has been used as a fixed input parameter for calculations;2. All the parameters(a, b, c, d) of CEOS are temperature dependent functions in the subcritical region and are temperature independent functions in the supercritical region and;3. A new α function is introduced with two compound specific parameters which are estimated by matching saturated vapor pressure at two fixed temperature points Tr= 0.5, 0.7. Our formalism enables us to cast three of the four parameters of the CEOS as a function of the remaining parameter. The proposed CEOS is used to predict properties of 334 pure compounds, including saturated vapor pressure and liquid density, compressed liquid density, heat capacities at the constant pressure and volume, enthalpy of vaporization, sound velocity. To calculate thermodynamic properties of a pure compound, the present CEOS require the critical temperature, the critical pressure, the pitzer’s acentric factor, the critical compressibility factor, and two parameters of the alpha function. The saturated liquid density predictions for pure fluids are very accurate when compared with GDN1(Ghoderao–Dalvi–Narayan 1),MpR(Modified peng–Robinson), and pT(patel–Teja) equations of state. Unlike MpR EOS, the proposed temperature dependent covolume parameter b in the present work satisfies all the constraints mentioned in the literature to avoid thermodynamic inconsistencies at the extreme temperature and pressure. Using van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule, the present CEOS is further used to predict bubble pressure and the vapor mole fraction of binary mixtures.

AIM:To compare histological endpoint assessment using noninvasive alternatives to biopsy during treatment in a chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV)***:patients with chronic HCV were randomized to receive interferon-based therapy for 24(genotypes 2/3)or 48(genotype 1)***～TM(FS)was assessed at baseline and at week-12 post-treatment *** biopsy for METAVIR was assessed by a single ***～ transient elastogra-phy(TE)was performed during treatment in a patient ***:Two thousand and sixty patients(n = 253 in Asia)were classif ied as METAVIR F0-1(n = 1682)or F2-4(n = 378).For F2-4,FS(n = 2055)had sensitiv-ity and specif icity of 0.87 and 0.61,respectively,with area under the receiver-operating curve of 0.82;corre-sponding values for TE(n = 214)and combined FS/TE(n = 209)were 0.77,0.88 and 0.88,and 0.93,0.68 and *** FS/TE agreement for F2-4 was 71%(κ = 0.41)and higher in Asians vs non-Asians(κ = 0.86 vs 0.35;p p pa vs 11.9 kpa,p = 0.006)scores were lower in patients with sustained virological response than in nonresponders,and were maintained through ***:FS and TE may reliably differentiate mild from moderate-advanced disease,with a potential for high diagnostic accuracy in Asians with chronic HCV.

Multiple insecticide resistance/susceptibility status of Culex quinquefasciatus,principal vector of bancroftian filariasis from filaria endemic areas of northern India

Objective:To understand the insecticide resistance status of Culex quinquefasciatus Say（Diptera: Culicidae）（***） to deltamethrin,cyfluthrin,permethrin,lambdacyhalothrin, DDT and malathion in filarial endemic areas of Uttar pradesh,***:Insecticide susceptibility assays were performed on wild-caught adult female *** mosquitoes to deltamethrin（0.05%）,cyfluthrin（0.15%）,permethrin（0.75%）,lambdacyhalothrin （0.05%）,malathion（5.0%） and DDT（4.0%）,the discriminating doses recommended by the World Health Organisation（WHO）.Results:The data showed that *** is highly resistant to DDT and malathion;the mortality was 28.33%and 27.5%,respectively and incipient resistance to synthetic pyrethroids（deltamethrin,cyfluthrin,permethrin,and lambdacyhalothrin）, where mortality ranged from 95.83%in permethrin to 98.33%in cyfluthrin and lambdacyhalothrin. Knockdown times(KDT50) in response to synthetic pyrethroids varied significantly between different insecticides（ppermethrin to 21.650 for cyfluthrin. Conclusions:The results presents here provide the status report of the insecticide resistance/ susceptibility of *** in major filaria endemic areas of northern India.
