Combined adaptive meshing technique and characteristic-based split algorithm for viscous incompressible flow analysis

A combined characteristic-based split algorithm and all adaptive meshing technique for analyzing two-dimensional viscous incompressible flow are presented. Tile method uses the three-node triangular element with equal-order interpolation functions for all variables of tile velocity components and pressure. The main advantage of the combined nlethod is that it inlproves the sohltion accuracy by coupling an error estinla- tion procedure to an adaptive meshing technique that generates small elements in regions with a large change ill sohmtion gradients, mid at the same time, larger elements in the other regions. The performance of the combined procedure is evaluated by analyzing one test case of the flow past a cylinder, for their transient and steady-state flow behaviors.

Coronary bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a revascularization procedure which reduces myocardial ischemia and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in selected patients;however, up to 40% of saphanous vein grafts may degenerate over 10 years. Although coronary angiography is the gold standard to detect graft patency and native vessel disease, sometimes it is difficult to locate the grafts resulting in increased exposure to radiation and contrast administration. This case highlights the utility of cardiac computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to provide comprehensive noninvasive assessment in a patient post CABG.(J Geriatr Cardiol 2007;4:244-247.)

Prognostic significance of microsatellite alterations at 1p36 in cholangiocarcinoma

This study aimed to turn municipal wastes from industries and households into fuel briquettes, namely coffee residue, tea residue, and fat *** experiments were set up in three groups of the following mixture: Group Ⅰ consisted of fat dregs and coffee residue;Group Ⅱ comprised fat dregs and tea residue;Group Ⅲ contained tea residue and coffee *** study discovered that in Group Ⅰ and Group Ⅱ, the ratio of 50:50 provided the highest heating value of 6,493 cal/g(Group Ⅰ), and 5,727 cal/g(Group Ⅱ), while in Group Ⅲ, the ratio of 30:70 provided the highest heating value of 4,786 cal/*** study also discovered that the biomass wastes rendered their moisture content(3-8%), the amount of ash(1-5%), volatile matter(71-87%) and fixed carbon(7-15%).The study also found that the fuel briquettes produced from Group Ⅰ and Group Ⅱ had desirable characteristics to produce fuel briquettes for households since they were easily moulded, inflammable with low amount of smoke and odour while those produced from Group Ⅲ were easily moulded, yet hardly inflammable with high amount of *** from the survey indicated that briquettes made from fat dregs mixed with coffee residue were easy to ignite, left no stains on hands, burned for a long time, and had good heat *** respondents also commented that the briquettes did not give off sparks and had less smoke and ash content than those of charcoal they normally used.

AIM： To investigate loss of heterozygosity （LOH） and microsatellite instability （MSI） on the chromosomal region 1p36-pter in cholangiocarcinoma （CCA） patients and determine the association between microsatellite alterations and clinicopathological parameters. METHODS： Ten polymorphic microsatellite markers were determined for LOH and MSI using GS-3000 gel scan fragment autoanalyzer. RESULTS： Sixty-eight out of 90 cases （75.6%） showed LOH in one or more loci. LOH was found most frequently at DIS199 （40.0%）, DIS507 （34.6%）, DIS2845 （30.5%）, and DIS2734 （30.1%）. MSI was found in 34 of 90 cases （37.8%） at one or more loci. Fine mapping at lp36 showed two distinctive regions of common loss, which were D1S2845 and the 25.5-cM region between D1S507 and D1S2734, indicating the existence of putative tumor suppressor genes that is likely to play important roles in the development of CCA. Patients with LOH at D1S234 showed less lymphatic invasion （P = 0.017）, whereas patients with LOH at D1S2676 exhibited more lymphatic invasion than those without （P = 0.031）. LOH at D1S2845 showed a significant correlation with nerve invasion （P = 0.029）. Moreover, patients who demonstrated MSI at D1S228 showed a poor prognosis （P = 0.0026）. CONCLUSION： Allelic loss plays a major role in microsatellite alterations at chromosome lp36, which may contribute to carcinogenesis and pathogenesis of liver fluke related CCA and these alterations can be used as molecular prognostic indicators for CCA patients.

AIM： To determine allelic imbalance on chromosomal region 21q22-qter including trefoil factor family genes （TFF） in cholangiocarcinoma （CCA） patients and analyze the correlation between allelic imbalances and clinicopathological parameters. METHODS： Quantitative PCR amplification was performed on four microsatellite markers and trefoil factor family genes （TFF1, TFF2, and TFF3） using a standard curve and SYBR Green I dye method. The relative copy number was determined by DNA copy number of tested locus to reference locus. The relative copy number was interpreted as deletion or amplification by comparison with normal reference range. Associations between allelic imbalance and clinicopathological parameters of CCA patients were evaluated by χ^2-tests. Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze survival. RESULTS： The frequencies of amplification at D21S1890, D21S1893, and TFF3 were 32.5%, 30.0%, and 28.7%, respectively. Patients who had amplification at regions covering D21S1893, D21S1890, and TFF showed poor prognosis, whereas patients who had deletion showed favorable prognosis （mean： 51.7 wk vs 124.82 wk, P = 0.012）. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that amplification of D21S1893, D21S1890 and TFF, blood vessel invasion, and staging were associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSION： D21S1893-D21S1890 region may harbor candidate genes especially TFF and serine protease family, which might be involved in tumor invasion and metastasis contributing to poor survival. The amplification in this region may be used as a prognostic marker in the treatment of CCA patients.

Objective:To evaluate the antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo of saponin–phospholipid complex of Panax ***:The in vitro cytotoxic effect of saponins extract and saponin–phospholipid complex against human lung cancer NCI-H460 and breast cancer cell lines BT474 was examined using MTS *** in vivo evaluation of antitumor potential,saponin and saponin–phospholipid complex were administered orally in rats induced mammary carcinogenesis by 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene,for 30 ***:Our data showed that saponin–phospholipid complex had stronger anticancer effect compared to saponin *** IC50 values of saponin–phospholipid complex and saponin extract for NCI-H460 cell lines were 28.47 mg/m L and 47.97 mg/mL,respectively and these values for BT474 cells were 53.18 mg/mL and 86.24 mg/mL,*** vivo experiments,administration of saponin,saponin–phospholipid complex and paclitaxel(positive control) effectively suppressed 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene-induced breast cancer evidenced by a decrease in tumor volume,the reduction of lipid peroxidation level and increase in the body weight,and elevated the enzymatic antioxidant activities of superoxide dismutase,catalase,glutathione peroxidase in rat breast ***:Our study suggests that saponin extract from Panax notoginseng and saponin–phospholipid complex have potential to prevent cancer,especially breast cancer.

AIM: To evaluate the role of thymidine phosphorylase (TP) in cholangiocarcinoma using small interfering RNA (siRNA). METHODS: A human cholangiocarcinoma-derived cell line KKU-M139, which has a naturally high level of endogenous TP, had TP expression transiently knocked down using siRNA. Cell growth, migration, in vitro angiogenesis, apoptosis, and cytotoxicity were assayed in TP knockdown and wild-type cell lines. RESULTS: TP mRNA and protein expression were decreased by 87.1% ± 0.49% and 72.5% ± 3.2%, respectively, compared with control cells. Inhibition of TP significantly decreased migration of KKU-M139, and suppressed migration and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. siRNA also reduced the ability of TP to resist hypoxia-induced apoptosis, while suppression of TP reduced the sensitivity of KKU-M139 to 5-fluorouracil. CONCLUSION: Inhibition of TP may be beneficial in decreasing angiogenesis-dependent growth and migration of cholangiocarcinoma but may diminish the response to 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy.

Objective: To compare bioi lm formation in trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(SXT)-susceptible Escherichia coli(E. coli)(SSEC) and SXT-resistant E. coli(SREC) isolated from patients with urinary tract infections, and study the motile ability and physical characteristics of the ***: A total of 74 E. coli isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility with the disc diffusion assay. Based on the SXT-susceptibility test, the E. coli isolates were divided into SSEC(N = 30) and SREC(N = 44) groups. All E. coli isolates were examined for motile ability by using a motility test medium, and for checking bioi lm formation a scanning electron microscope was used. Bacterial colony size was measured with a vernier caliper and bacterial cell length was measured under a light microscope. The bacterial growth rate was studied by plotting the cell growth(absorbance) versus the incubation time. Results: The frequencies of non-motility and biofilm formation in the SREC group were signii cantly higher than that in the SSEC group(P < 0.01). The SREC bacterial cell length was shorter than that in the SSEC group [(1.35 ± 0.05) vs.(1.53 ± 0.05) μm, P < 0.05)], whereas the bacterial colony size and mid-log phase of the growth curve were not signii cantly dif erent. Conclusions: The present study indicated that bioi lm formation and phenotypic change of uropathogenic E. coli can be attributed to the mechanism of E. coli SXT resistance.
