Background:The Functional Movement Screen(FMS^(TM)) has become increasingly popular for identifying functional limitations in basic functional *** exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to confirm feasibility of performing the FMS^(TM) in older active adults,assess prevalence of asymmetries and to evaluate the relationship between functional movement ability,age,physical activity levels and body mass index(BMI).Methods:This is an observational study;97 men(n = 53) and women(n = 44) between the ages of 52 and 83 *** was computed and self-reported physical activity levels were *** were grouped by age(5-year intervals),BMI(normal,over-weight,and obese)and *** participant's performance on the FMS^(TM) was digitally recorded for later ***:The youngest age group(50–54 years) scored highest in all seven tests and the oldest age group(75+) scored lowest in most of the tests compared to all other age *** subjects in the 'normal weight' group performed no different than those who were in the 'overweight' group;both groups performed better than the 'obese' *** the 97 participants 54 had at least one *** pairwise correlations between the total FMS^(TM) score and age(r =-0.531),BMI(r =-0.270),and the measure of activity level(r = 0.287) were significant(p r all).Conclusion:FMS^(TM) scores decline with increased BMI,increased age,and decreased activity *** screen identifies range of motion-and strength-related *** FMS^(TM) can be used to assess functional limitations and *** research should evaluate if a higher total FMS^(TM) score is related to fewer falls or injuries in the older population.

Synthesis of Hierarchical SnO2 Nanowire–TiO2 Nanorod Brushes Anchored to Commercially Available FTO-coated Glass Substrates

Growth of single-crystal Sn O_2 nanowires using a fluorine-doped Sn O_2(FTO) thin film as both the source and substrate is demonstrated for the first time at relatively low temperature(580 °C) which preserves the integrity of the underlying glass support and improves scalability to devices. Furthermore, a microwave hydrothermal process is shown to grow Ti O_2 nanorods on these nanowires to create a hierarchical nanoheterostructure that will lead to efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation and rapid transport of electrons to the substrate. This process simplifies nanowire growth by using commercially available and widely used FTO substrates without the need for an additional upstream Sn source and can be used as a high surface area host structure to many other hierarchical structures.

A review of phosphorus nutrition in irrigated cotton farming systems of Australia

Does Tenure Security reduce Disaster risk? A Comparative Study of the Nairobi Settlements of Kibera and Kawangware

While scholarship suggests that improving tenure security and housing significantly reduces disaster risk at the household level within urban settings,this assertion has not been adequately *** security can be conceived as being composed of three interrelated and overlapping forms:tenure security as determined by legal systems;de facto tenure security;and tenure security as perceived by *** article traces the relationship between tenure security,the quality of housing,and disaster risk on the basis of a mixed methods comparative case study of the settlements of Kawangware and Kibera in *** the findings suggest that owner-occupancy is associated with the structural integrity of dwellings to a greater extent than tenantship,no association was found between the length of occupancy by households and the structural integrity of the ***,tenantship is not found to be closely associated with fires and flooding affecting the dwelling as extant scholarship would *** ownership is linked with greater investment and upgrading of property with significant implications for disaster *** findings highlight the complex relationship between tenure security and disaster risk in urban informal settlements and provide impetus for further investigation.

Extra dimensions and atomic transition frequencies

New unification theories predict large extra dimensions （LEDs）. If that is the case, gravity would be stronger at short ranges than what Newtonian gravity predicts. LEDs could also have effects at atomic level. In this paper we propose a new method to constrain the size of ‘gravity-only’ LEDs by analysing how these LEDs modify the energy of the atomic transitions 1s-2s and 2s-2p （Lamb shift）, in the particular case of the hydrogen and muonium atoms. We estimate these effects by using Bethe＇s non-relativistic treatment of Lamb shift. In the particular case of three LEDs, which may be a candidate to explain the interaction mechanism of dark matter particles, we have found that current knowledge in atomic spectroscopy could constrain their sizes to less than 10 μm. Although our contributions do not reach the sensitivity given by SN1987a, they are still slightly better than recent constraints given by Inverse Square Law tests of the Eoet-Wash group at Washington University, which gave r3 〈 36.6 μm.

Spruce budworm feeding and oviposition are stimulated by monoterpenes in white spruce epicuticular waxes

Monoterpenes, source of the distinctive odor of conifers, are generally considered plant defensive compounds. However, they are also known to act as long-range insect attractants, as they are volatile and permeate forest airspaces. Moreover, they are lipid soluble and can be absorbed into plant epicuticular waxes. We test their role in short-range host plant choice by both adult females and larvae of a folivorous forest pest （Choristoneura fumiferana）. We conducted laboratory assays testing the responses of Eastern spruce budworm to an artificial monoterpene mix （α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, myrcene） and to white spruce （Picea glauca） epicuticular waxes in closed arenas. Ovipositing females pre- ferred filter paper discs treated with P. glauca waxes to controls, and preferred the waxes ＋ monoterpenes treatment to waxes alone. However, females showed no preference between the monoterpene-treated disc and the control when presented without waxes. Feeding larvae prefered wax discs to control discs. They also consumed discs treated with realistic monoterpene concentrations and wax preferentially over wax-only discs, but showed no preference between extremely high monoterpene concentrations and wax-only controls. In an insect-free assay, P. glauca epicuticular wax decreased monoterpene volatilization. These results suggest that P. glauca waxes and realistic concentrations of monoterpenes are stimulatory to both egg-laying females and feeding larvae, and that their effects are synergistic.

Elastic rescattering photoelectron distributions entering the relativistic regime

We report photoelectron energy spectra and angular distributions for ionization with elastic scattering in ultra- strong laser fields. Noble gas species with Hartree-Fock scattering potentials show a reduction in elastic rescat- tering with the increasing energy of ultrastrong fields and when the Lorentz deflection of the photoelectron exceeds its wave function spread. The relativistic extension of a three-step recollision model is well-suited to the ultrastrong intensity regime （〉10^17 W/cm2） that lies between traditional strong fields and extreme relativistic interactions.

BACKGrOUND:Primary hepatic carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor containing an intimate mixture of carci- nomatous and sarcomatous *** on risk factors, epidemiology,and pathogenesis of the tumor as well as the experience in its treatment are limited. METHOD:We present a case of primary carcinosarcoma of the liver in a 69-year-old man who complained of right hypochondrial pain and weight loss for two months. rESULTS:Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 14×12 cm mass in segments 7-8 and 4 of the liver with vena hepatica *** ultrasonography-guided biopsy showed osteoid tissue without osteoblastic *** structures accompanied the osteoid *** patient underwent surgery after a diagnosis of *** frozen sections revealed a carcinosarcoma associated with an osteosarcoma and cholangiocellular carcinoma components. CONCLUSIONS:Preoperative diagnosis of this rare primary hepatic malignant tumor may be difficult by biopsy owing to intratumoral *** mature areas of the osteosarcomatous component may lead to misdiagnosis of metaplastic bone *** features of this rare entity are discussed.
