Retinoblastoma: The Situation in Burkina Faso over Ten Years

Context: In Burkina Faso, there is only one retinoblastoma treatment center located in the capital. Nowadays, the treatment of retinoblastoma has benefited from the contribution of scientific progress. Objective: The aim was to take stock of the situation of retinoblastoma in the pediatric oncology department from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection over a 10-year period, based on records of patients admitted to pediatric oncology department of CHU-YO. Data were analysed using CS Pro version 7.2 software. Categorical variables were compared using Pearsons Chi-square test at the 5% significance level. Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Operational definitions were used for lost to follow-up, consultation and diagnosis delays. Results: We collected a total of 204 cases in 10 years, i.e. an annual average of 20.4 cases/year. The mean age at diagnosis was 37.5 months for unilateral cases and 26.4 months for bilateral cases. Male predominance was noted, with a sex ratio of 1.31. The majority of patients came from disadvantaged backgrounds (72% farming fathers and 91% housewives). Clinically, leukocoria and exophthalmos were the main presenting features. The average time to consultation was long (8.73 months) and unilateral localization was predominantly unilateral at 77%. In terms of treatment, 102 patients were eligible for curative treatment and 80 for palliative treatment. The prognosis was poor, with 41% death and numerous cases of lost to follow-up (18%). Overall survival was estimated at 32%. The factor associated with the lethality of retiniblastoma was the extension of the tumor to other organs. Conclusion: Recognition of the early clinical signs of retinoblastoma can anticipate the occurrence of this cancer. Protective effects ofLactobacillus plantarum against epithelial barrier dysfunction of human colon cell line NCM460

AIM: To investigate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum ) in the intestinal permeability and expression of tight junction (TJ) using the normal human colon cell line NCM460. METHODS: Paracellular permeability of NCM460 monolayers was determined by transepithelial electrical resistance and dextran permeability. Expression of TJ proteins in NCM460 cell monolayers was detected by Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain ***: L. plantarum played an important role in increasing transepithelial electrical resistance and decreasing the permeability to macromolecules of NCM460 monolayers against the disruption caused by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli ) or enteroinvasive E. coli . L. plantarum also prevented the decrease in the expression of TJ proteins and F-actin in NCM460 ***: L. plantarum can protect against dysfunction of NCM460 intestinal epithelial barrier caused by enteropathogenic E. coli or enteroinvasive E. coli , and thus can be a potential candidate of therapeutic agents for the treatment of intestinal diseases.

实验发现亲/疏油交替供油的功能润湿表面能提高微量供油下有效润滑的成膜性能。基于此,建立了有限长滚子副润滑模型,分析了交替供油的亲/疏油带宽及工作参数对润滑性能的增强规律。研究发现,微量供油条件下可利用交替供油方式达到线接触副润滑增效的目的,但供油交替变换使接触区润滑性能不稳定,且润滑增效作用会受功能表面亲/疏油带宽和卷吸速度的影响。

Stripe theory based numerical method for solving asymmetrical hysteresis of friction force in linear rolling guideways

Linear rolling guideways(LRGs) play an important role in precision engineering. In the pre-rolling region, the hysteretic friction force exerts great impacts on the positioning accuracy. Numerical and experimental studies of the hysteresis of friction force are presented in this paper. A model, which is based on the stripe theory and the simplified theory of rolling contact, is built to describe the transient hysteresis of the friction force. Then, the model is modified by taking the anelasticity effect into consideration. Experimentally, a linear motor direct-drive setup is utilized to measure the transient asymmetrical hysteresis of the friction force in the pre-rolling region of an LRG. The influences of the pre-rolling displacement and the dwelling time on the asymmetrical hysteresis of the friction force are studied. The numerical and experimental results are well correlated, which shows good accuracy of the model. The transient asymmetrical hysteresis of friction force in the pre-rolling region of LRGs can thus be determined using the model.

Extra dimensions and atomic transition frequencies

New unification theories predict large extra dimensions （LEDs）. If that is the case, gravity would be stronger at short ranges than what Newtonian gravity predicts. LEDs could also have effects at atomic level. In this paper we propose a new method to constrain the size of ‘gravity-only’ LEDs by analysing how these LEDs modify the energy of the atomic transitions 1s-2s and 2s-2p （Lamb shift）, in the particular case of the hydrogen and muonium atoms. We estimate these effects by using Bethe＇s non-relativistic treatment of Lamb shift. In the particular case of three LEDs, which may be a candidate to explain the interaction mechanism of dark matter particles, we have found that current knowledge in atomic spectroscopy could constrain their sizes to less than 10 μm. Although our contributions do not reach the sensitivity given by SN1987a, they are still slightly better than recent constraints given by Inverse Square Law tests of the Eoet-Wash group at Washington University, which gave R3 〈 36.6 μm.
