Piezoelectricity is pivotal for applications in micro/nanoelectromechanical systems(MeMS/NeMS).Inducing such a property in 2D systems via the reduction of the dimensionality of their corresponding 3D bulk is here *** on DFT theory and Gaussian-type-localized basis sets,the structural,electronic,mechanical,and piezoelectric properties of both 3D and 2D rare earth monochalcogenides RmX(Rm=Tm,Yb,Lu,and X=S,Se,Te)are investigated using the CRYSTAL *** intriguingly,the 2D LuX compounds display a buckled structure,where the Lu and X atoms protrude from the monolayer surface leading to an additional out-of-plane piezoelectric effect;(e_(31)=2104.84,1770.28,1689.79 pC/m,and d31=56.37,49.76,and 147.90 pm/V for LuS,LuSe,and LuTe,respectively).Such piezoelectric response is two orders of magnitude larger than the one of recently reported 2D ferroelectric MXenes,and is nearly thirty times larger than the commonly used AlN and GaN bulk ***,the reduced elastic constants obtained,when compared to other 2D materials,confirm the flexibility and softness of the considered 2D systems.

Fires at the Wildland-Urban Interface(WUI)are becoming increasingly hazardous for life safety and property *** and standards for fire practitioners are needed in order to help WUI communities face this threat and become fire-adapted.A performance-based design approach(PBD)is proposed to deal with the complex issues present at the WUI homeowner scale,which entails the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)tools such as FDS in order to identify vulnerabilities in a quantitative *** analysis of recent european WUI fires is presented,along with the definition of several pattern scenarios that can be derived from *** on this analysis,examples of PBD fire scenarios specific for the Mediterranean WUI microscale are presented,involving glazing systems,roofing and gutters,external structures adjacent to the main building,and gaps present in the building envelope.A worked example to show the implementation of the proposed PBD method is provided in which the fire impact of residential fuel on a glazing system is quantitatively analysed.

Comelina sotivo is an oil seed crop which can be grown on marginal lands. Camelina seed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids （〉35%） and y-tocopherol but is also high in erucic acid and glucosinolates. Camelina meal, is the by-product after the oil has been extracted. Camelina meal was fed to 28 d old weaned pigs at 3.7% and 7.4% unt age 56 d. The camelina meal supplements in the soy based diets, improved feed efficiency but also significantly increased the liver weights. Gene expression analyses of the livers, using intra-species microarrays, identified increased expression of phase 1 and phase 2 drug metabolism enzymes. The porcine versions of the enzymes were confirmed by real time PCR. Cytochrome 8b1 （CYPSB1）, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 （Aldh2）, and thiosulfate transferase （TST） were all significantly stimulated. Collectively, these genes implicate the camelina glucosinolate metabolite, methyl-sulfinyldecyl isothiocyanate, as the main xeniobiotic, causing increased hepatic metabolism and increased liver weight.

Liver transplantation(LT)is the most effective treatment for end-stage liver disease and complications of portal hypertension(PHT).However,PHT can relapse as a consequence of viral,alcoholic or metabolic chronic liver disease(CLD)recurrence,rejection,vascular abnormalities,small-for-size syndrome and technical complications(e.g.,portal or hepatic veins stenosis and/or thrombosis)[1].LT recipients with PHT may suffer from com plications similarly to non-transplanted cirrhotic patients(e.g.,refractory ascites,variceal hemorrhages and hydrothorax)although with higher morbidity and mortality due to their postoperative status and concomitant immunosuppressive therapy[2].

Frequent Applications of Organic Matter to Agricultural Soil Increase Fungistasis

Soil-borne plant pathogens are among the most important limiting factors for the productivity of agro-ecosystems. Fungistasis is the natural capability of soils to inhibit the germination and growth of soil-borne fungi in the presence of optimal abiotic conditions. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of different soil managements, in terms of soil amendment types and frequency of application, on fungistasis. For this purpose, a microcosm experiment was performed by conditioning a soil with frequent applications of organic matter with contrasting biochemical quality （i. e., glucose, alfalfa straw and wheat straw）. Thereafter, the fungistasis response was assessed on four fungi （Aspergillus niger, Botrytis cinerea, Pyrenoehaeta lycopersici and Trichoderma harzianum）. Conditioned soils were characterized by measuring microbial activity （soil respiration） and functional diversity using the BIOLOG ecoPlatesTM method. Results showed that irrespective of the fungal species and amendment types, frequent applications of organic matter reduced fungistasis relief and shortened the time required for fungistasis restoration. The frequent addition of easily decomposable organic compounds enhanced soil respiration and its specific catabolic capabilities. This study demonstrated that frequent applications of organic matter affected soil fungistasis likely as a result of higher microbial activity and functional diversity.

Pure W and W-Cu-W trilayer coatings were deposited on an Fe substrate by d.c. magnetron sputtering. The α-β phase evolution, intragranular stress evolution in sputter-deposited W layer were investigated by x-ray diffraction. They are directly related to the film microstructure, density and adhesion. Therefore, control of the film stress and phase component transition is essential for its applications. The phase component transition from β-W to α-W and intragranular stress evolution from tensile to compressive strongly depend on the deposition parameters and can be induced by lowering Ar pressure and rising target power. The compressively stressed films with α-W phase have a dense microstructure and high adhesion to Fe substrate.

Fortification of pork loins with docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) and its effect on flavour

Pork is traditionally low in docosahexanoic acid （DHA, C22：6n-3） and deficient in omega-3 fats for a balanced human diet. DHA as triglycerides was commercially prepared from the microalgae Schizochytfium and injected into fresh pork loins. Treatments of a mixed brine control （CON）, 3.1% sunflower oil in mixed brine （SF） and a 3.1% DHA oil in mixed brine （DHA） were injected into pork loins at 10 mL/100 g and grilled at 205℃. After cooking, the CON and SF pork loins contained 0.03 to 0.05 mg DHA/g of pork and the DHA injected loins contained approximately 1.46 mg DHA/g. This also changed the fatty acid profile of omega-6：omega-3 from, 5 to 1 in the CON pork, to a ratio of 1.7 to 1 in DHA pork. The appearance, odor, oxidation rates and sensory taste, as judged by a trained panel, determined the DHA injected meat to be, ＇slightly desirable＇ and gave lower ＇off flavour＇ scores, relative to the CON and SF injected pork. Pork can be fortified with DHA oil to 146 mg/100 g serving, which would meet half the recommended daily omega 3 fatty acid requirements for adult humans and would be desirable in taste.
