The syntheses of a library of new chiral aminophenolate bidentate O,N-type ligands HOC6H4(2-R- 4-R′)CH2N(Me)CH(Me)C6H5 [R = R′ = But, 1;R = R′ = Pent, 2;R = But, R′ = Me, 3;R = Me, R′ = But, 4;R = R′ = Me, 5] and tridentate O,N,O-type ligands HOC6H4(2,4-But)CH = NCH(R′′)C6H5 [R′′ = Me, 6;R′′ = CH2OMe, 7] are reported. These ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H & 13C), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. These ligands serve as chiral auxiliaries for inorganic chemists to design chiral metal-based complexes for asymmetric catalysis and stereoselective polymerization reactions. Three new heteroleptic zinc complexes based on these ligands have been synthesized in moderate yields via a ligand-exchange transamination reaction between homoleptic [Zn(N(SiMe3)2)2] and one equivalent of corresponding ligands to afford [L3ZnN- (SiMe3)2] (3a), [L4ZnN(SiMe3)2] (4a), and [L7ZnN(SiMe3)2] (7a). Solvent-free polymerization of raclactide at 130°C using these zinc compounds yielded atactic polylactides with Mw 10,000 g/mol and narrow polydispersity of 1.3.

Salvage of Failed Osteoarticular Tibia Allografts with Knee Arthroplasties

Background: Limb preservation in musculoskeletal tumor surgery has largely replaced amputation. Biologic reconstructions are now performed as preferred choice;if not feasible options are “megaprostheses”, allografts or composites. Endoprosthetic reconstructions usually provide immediate function, but fail at long term. Osteochondral allografts allow for one-to-one restoration and have potential for incorporation;however degeneration of the cartilage requiring revision almost inevitably will occur. In most cases, revision is then done by endoprosthetic replacement. Aim: In our patients, resurfacing of retained allografts failed. Problems encountered are presented and solutions proposed. Case Presentation: Resurfacing over retained allografts in the 2 index cases has resulted in failures related to fractures and instability. Revision with massive constrained endoprostheses was needed. Based on the experience with these failures, primary endoprosthetic replacement anchored in vital bone in a following case resulted in stable function. Conclusion: Knee replacement for advanced degeneration of the osteochondral allograft apparently needs choosing increased femoro-tibial constraint systems and stem extensions anchored to vital host bone.

Descriptions of tree root morphology inform design of belowground biomass and carbon inventories and sampling for research. We studied root morphology of tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus), an important component in mixed evergreen forests of California and Oregon, USA. Tanoak re-sprouts from belowground lignotubers after disturbances, and stores an unknown amount of carbon in coarse roots underground. We sought to ascribe explanatory nomenclature to roots’ morphological features and to identify models describing tanoak root morphology. Twelve tanoak root systems were excavated, dissected, and measured. Roots tapered according to their circumference and location. Larger roots closer to the lignotuber (located at the base of the tree stem) tapered more rapidly per unit of length. Tanoak roots forked frequently. Root cross-sectional area was preserved after forking events (i.e., the sum of cross-sectional areas for smaller roots on one side of the fork correlated with the adjoining large root). Occurrence and quantity of root branches (small roots branching laterally from larger roots) was dependent upon length of the source root segment. Our models of tanoak root morphology are designed to be organized together to estimate biomass of any segment or collection of lateral roots (e.g., roots lost/missed during excavation, or in lieu of destructive sampling), given root diameter at a known distance from the lignotuber. The taper model gives distal- and proximal-end diameters for calculation of volume for segments of root tapering between forks. Frequency of forking and branching can also be predicted. Summing the predicted mass of each lateral root segment, branch, and forked segment would produce an estimate of mass for a contiguous network of lateral roots.

Two calculation methods on the partition functions for diatomic molecules in plas- mas out of thermal equilibrium are reported. A Boltzmann distribution for the electronic, vi- brational and rotational quantum levels is assumed in the two calculation methods. The results obtained by two methods are displayed for four sorts of diatomic molecules, 02, N2, OH and NO, that are present in humid air plasmas. The calculation method of density for the electronically excited states is developed. Finally, a method to calculate the partition functions for simulating the non-normalized diatomic spectra is discussed.

Introduction: Cutaneous endometriosis is an uncommon but well-known skin disorder that represents about 0.5% to 1% of all endometriosis. The objective of this case series is to report clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of various forms of cutaneous endometriosis. Material and Methods: It was an observational, retrospective and descriptive review of cases presenting with cutaneous endometriosis among Cameroonian women managed at the gynaecological outpatient department of Yaounde gynaeco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital. All the following parameters were analysed: age, parity, previous pelvic surgery, presenting symptoms and duration, associated symptoms, localizations, imaging, size of the lesion, other localization of endometriosis, management and histopathological results. Results: we reported 4 cases of cutaneous endometriosis, with 3 umbilical endometriosis and 1 abdominal scar endometriosis. Patient age ranged from 28 to 39 years with an average of 33 years. All patients described infertility (two primary and two secondary) and two had a history of abdominal surgery. All patients presented local cyclical signs such as pain, swelling, color change and bleeding. The duration of symptoms varied from 2 to 3 years and the size of lesions ranged from 2 to 3.5 cm for umbilical lesions and was 9 cm for abdominal scar endometriosis. In all cases, no imaging was required for the diagnosis, which was suspected on the basis of patient’s history and the cyclical nature of local signs, followed by wide surgical excision and confirmation on histopathology. Conclusion: Cutaneaous endometriosis is a rare benign condition. Umbilical endometriosis seems to be the main cutaneous localization and can be described as primary or secondary. Even if its diagnosis must be confirmed by histopathology, it should be considered in patient with cutaneous cyclic signs such as pain, swelling or bleeding with or without history of abdominal surgery.
