Objective: This study aimed to determine searching for the determinants of regional obesity (visceral and subcutaneous obesity) within the cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) in patients followed in cardiology at the University Clinics of Kinshasa (UCK) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Material and Methods: Cross-sectional and analytical study had sought the determinants of regional obesity (visceral and subcutaneous obesity) by bio-impedance inside the CVRF during the period from July 1 to September 31, 2014. The multivariate analysis (logistic regression) has established the levels of association between regional obesity and CVRF. The statistical significance threshold was set at p Results: A total of 642 patients participated in the present study. The frequencies of visceral and subcutaneous obesity were respectively 45.5% (without significant distinction between the two sexes: Men 48% n = 92/188 vs. Women 44.1 n = 200/454;p = 0.148) and 60.7% with a predominance in women (36.2 n = 68/188 vs. 70.9% n = 322/454;p that alongside regional obesity was: advanced age, tobacco use, alcohol use, physical inactivity, high blood pressure (HBP), diabetes mellitus (DM) and Chronic renal failure (CRF) in the respective proportions of 50.8%, 13.4%, 44.2%, 86.3%, 10.7%, 13.4% and 0.3%. The determinants of regional obesity were advanced age, smoking and obesity on body mass index (BMI) for visceral obesity;advanced age, female gender, alcohol intake and obesity on BMI and waist circumference (WC) as well as hypertriglyceridemia for subcutaneous obesity. Conclusion: This study showed a significant frequency of regional obesity with the following determinants: advanced age, female gender, smoking, alcohol, BMI/WC obesity and hypertriglyceridemia.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension, their determinants and associated cardiovascular risk factors in Congolese urban dwellers. Methods: From July 2007 to March 2008, we collected information on lifestyle habits, medical history and anthropometric data in 1292 household members of Adoula Quarter, Kinshasa, aged 20 years or more, 731 women (56.6%). We obtained measurements of BP, blood glucose, serum lipids and qualitative proteinuria. We defined blood pressure categories according to JNC7 classification and used logistic regression analyses to assess their independent determinants. We obtained age adjustment of continuous and categorical variables using GLM and Genmod procedures, respectively. Results: Prehypertension was observed in 30.3% of subjects, 34.9% of men and 26.7% of women (P = 0.0045). The prevalence of hypertension amounted to 30.9% with no difference between genders. Participants with prehypertension had average age, BMI and waist circumference intermediate between those with normal BP and hypertensive subjects. Their glucose and lipids levels were similar to those of normotensives. The prevalence of prehypertension amounted to 33% at age 20 - 29 years and decreased to 16.7% at ≥60 years whereas the prevalence of hypertension increased from 11.2% to 71.4%. The rates of diabetes mellitus were similar accross blood pressure catogo- ries whilst prevalences of overweight/obesity, abdominal adiposity, dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome significatively increased (P = 0.05 or less). Among participants with prehypertension, 73% had two or more additional cardiovascular risk factors. In the logistic model the probability of prehypertension was higher in men (OR: 1.429;95% CI: 1.099 - 1.857) and participants with overweight/obesity (OR: 1.666;1.146 - 2.422), lower in participants aged ≥ 55 years (0.427;0.267 - 0.683) and those with high fruit intake (0.691;0.488 - 0.977). Background: Flight and cabin crew are known to be at increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, ASCVD risks have not yet been compared in flight and cabin crew in low resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa. Objectives: To assess absolute ASCVD risk estimate and its clinical correlates among flight and cabin crew. Methods: From June 1st 2015 to December 30th 2015, 379 consecutive aviation navigants (Flight crew: 62.5%, pilots: 46.2%, women: 29.6%, Caucasians 23.2%) were enrolled in a cross-sectional survey of ASCVD risk estimate using the Framingham tools. They underwent a physical examination for either initial or renewal medical certificate Class 1 or 2 including blood chemistry, ECG, and echocardiogram as per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA-DRC) medical regulations. We modeled the risk of moderate and high ASCVD estimate in a stepwise logistic regression. Results: Low, moderate and high ASCVD risk estimates were observed respectively in 248 (65.4%), 64 (16.9%), and 67 (17.7%) navigants. Moderate and high ASCVD risk estimates predominated among flight than cabin crew (23.6% vs. 5.6%;p 0.0001 and 28.3% vs. null;p 0.001), low ASCVD risk estimate among cabin than flight crew (94.4% vs. 48.1%;p ≤ 0.001).
