Qualitative and Quantitative Estimation of Hydroquinone in Skin Whitening Cosmetics

Hydroquinone has been used for decades as a skin lightening agent. Its use in cosmetics has been banned as a result of skin problems including contact dermatitis and ochronosis. A total of 22 samples of different skin whitening cosmetics were collected from local market. They were analyzed by using thin layer chromatography and HPLC for qualitative and quantitative determination of their hydroquinone contents. The hydroquinone was extracted from samples by using 96% ethanol and was subjected to TLC analysis. Eleven out of 22 samples were found to contain hydroquinone. The HPLC analysis showed the concentration of hydroquinone ranged from 0.002% to 0.092% in the cosmetic samples.

目的:研究百蕊草抗炎有效部位中的黄酮类化合物。方法:采用多种层析分离方法进行分离纯化,通过HPLC-DAD对黄酮类化合物进行快速定性,并结合1H-NMR1、3C-NMR和ESI-MS等技术确定了化合物的结构。结果:分离并鉴定了5个黄酮类化合物分别为紫云英苷(Ⅰ)、芸香苷(Ⅱ)、木樨草素7-O-葡萄糖苷(Ⅲ)、5-甲基山奈酚(Ⅳ)、芹菜素-5-O-葡萄糖-鼠李糖苷(Ⅴ)。结论:其中化合物Ⅳ和Ⅴ为首次从该植物中分离得到。

Phytochemical investigations of the ethanolic extract of leaves of Clutia lanceolata(Family:Euphorbiaceae)resulted in the isolation of four compounds viz.3,4-dihydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid(1),2,20-dihydroxy-1,10-binaphthyl(2),1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthracene-9,10-dione(3)and 5-hydroxy-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-1,4,6-trien-3-one(4).Although all the isolated compounds were known but this was the first report from this plant *** structures were established on the basis of chemical and physical evidences *** analysis,FT-IR,1 H-NMR,13CNMR and mass spectral *** of compound 2 and 4 was further authenticated by single-crystal X-ray analysis and density functional theory *** isolated compounds(1–4)were screened for AChE enzyme inhibition assay in which compound 3 and 4 were found to be more potent AChE *** docking study of potent AChE inhibitor was performed to find the probable binding mode of the compounds into the active site of ***,the isolated compounds were also screened for in vivo cytotoxicity by brine shrimp lethality assay.

Mangrove soils are well known for their high capacity of storing organic carbon (SOC) in various pools;however, a relatively small change in SOC pools could cause significant impacts on greenhouse gas concentrations. Thus, for an in-depth understanding of SOC distribution and stock to predict the role of Sundarbans mangrove in mitigating global warming and greenhouse effects, different extraction methods were employed to fractionate the SOC of Sundarbans soils into cold-water (CWSC) and hot-water (HWSC) soluble, moderately labile (MLF), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and resistant fractions (RF) using a newly developed modified-method. A significant variation in total SOC (p −2 in 1 m soil profile and has an average of 31.80 kg·C·m−2. The germination and metal translocation ability of two sunflower seedlings were compared to identify the cultivar differences towards metal contamination at juvenile stage. The heavy metal treatments include: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM Ni, Cd and Pb applied in sand filled pots to Hysun-33 and FH-533 sunflower. The highest germination percentage (79%) and vigor index were recorded for Hysun-33 with no heavy metal treatment. Pb and Cd treatments reduced the growth attributes of 20 days old seedlings of both the cultivars. The Ni translocation effectively enhanced the shoot and root biomass of Hysun-33. The high concentration of 150 and 200 mM Cd and Pb drastically reduced Mn and K contents, vigor, length and biomass of two sunflower cultivars. Among three of the heavy metals, Cd was found more toxic than Pb and Ni. Roots of 20 days old seedlings of Hysun-33 were able to hold more Cd metal and stop its translocation to epigenous parts. Although 150 and 200 mM Ni effects the germination and vigor of sunflower cultivars more than 50 and 100 mM Ni, it is found less toxic in comparison to Cd and Pb. The Cd accumulation in roots suggests that it is physiologically most active sink for Cd metal while epigenous parts of sunflower cultivars are sink for Pb and Ni metal as shoot of sunflower cultivars accumulates high contents of Pb and Ni.

Spatial Variation of Vegetation Moisture Mapping Using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission &Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Data

Drought is a recurrent phenomenon in Jharkhand. It affects the livelihoods of the majority of its people, particularly tribals and dalits living in rural areas. Twelve of the 24 districts of the state, covering 43% of the total land area, are covered under the Drought Prone Areas Programme (DPAP). Hunger and starvation deaths are reported almost every year. Vegetation moisture content is one of the key parameters in drought monitoring, agricultural modelling and forest health mapping. In this paper the three different approaches is described using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission & Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data for measuring the vegetation moisture content in a part of Palamu Commissionaire of Jharkhand state, which is prone to severe drought. ASTER thermal data was used to calculate land surface temperature using Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) emissivity correction method. Reflective bands are used to determine NDVI, Modified Soil Adjustment Vegetation Index (MSAVI) & Normalised Differential Water Index (NDWI). The three different vegetation moisture estimation methods namely MSAVI – LST (land surface temperature) feature space identification, NDWI & Vegetation Dryness Index (VDI) is applied to determine the vegetation moisture level. The results of three methods were classified and final moisture content map was produced. The result was validated using rainfall data of study area. This study indicates that by proper pre-processing of ASTER data, it can be used to estimate the land surface temperature and vegetation moisture content and can be used for drought prediction.

Abdominal wall hernia in a rural population in India—Is spectrum changing?

Hernia is a common word that most surgeons are familiar with. A retrospective study was planned to analyse the spectrum of abdominal wall hernias in a rural population inIndia. Majority of the patients were of 40 - 70 yrs. Male to female ratio was 7:1. Incidence of groin hernias showed an increasing trend with advancing age. Out of total 320 cases, inguinal hernias were predominating in 77.81% cases. Ventral hernias were present in about 18% cases. However, femoral hernias were rare. We concluded that spectrum of abdominal wall hernias is almost the same all over the globe despite having differences in their socioeconomic and educational status.

Reflectance and emittance spectroscopy in the near-infra red and short-wave infra red offers a rapid, Inexpensive, non-destructive tool for determining the mineralogy of rock and soil samples. Hyperspectral remote sensing has the potential to provide the detailed physico-chemistry (mineralogy, chemistry, morphology) of the earth’s surface. This information is useful for mapping potential host rocks, alteration assemblages and mineral characteristics, in contrast to the older generation of low spectral resolution systems. In the present study EO-1, hyperion data has been used for the delineation of AL+OH minerals. The requirements for extracting bauxites from Hyperion images is to first compensate for atmospheric effects using cross track illumination correction & the log residual calibration model. MNF transformation was applied to reduce the data noise and for extracting the extreme pixels. Some pure pixel end member for the target mineral and the backgrounds were used in this study to account for the spectral angle mapping & matched filtering and the results were validated with the respect of field study.

Prevalence of Anemia in Patients with COPD and Its Potential Impact on Morbidity of COPD Patients

Background: Although COPD is traditionally associated with polycythemia, the systemic inflammation that is now recognized as a feature of COPD makes it a possible cause of Anemia of Chronic Disease (ACD). Preliminary evidences suggest that anemia in COPD may be more prevalent than expected occurring in 10% - 15% of patients. While in states like chronic heart failure and renal insufficiency, anemia has been extensively studied;little attention has been given to it in COPD. Objectives: To see the prevalence of anemia in patients with COPD and its potential impact on morbidity of COPD patients. Design and Setting: A university hospital-based cross-sectional study in Kashmir, India. Methods: Two hundred patients (119 males and 81 females) with spirometery documented COPD were evaluated for frequency of anemia. In addition to routine investigations, erythropoietin levels were done in a subgroup of patients. Results: A total of 36 cases (20 males and 16 females) of anemia were detected giving a frequency of 18%. Normocytic normochromic type of anemia was present in 32 (88.89%) patients while the rest had normocytic hypochromic type of anemia. Majority of patients were in GOLD stage 11 and had decreased serum iron, transferrin saturation and TIBC. Erythropoietin levels were significantly raised in anemic COPD patients compared to non-anemic COPD patients. The various factors significantly associated with anemia were: No. of exacerbations of COPD, No. of hospital admissions, BMI and erythropoietin levels. Conclusion: Anemia occurs frequently in patients of COPD and is associated with increased morbidity in the form of No. of exacerbations and hospital admissions. Correcting anemia in these patients may improve their clinical outcome.
