Tectonic and climatic controls on late Quaternary bajada sedimentation along narmada-Son Fault(nSF),Gujarat,Western India

An alluvial bajada has been recognized along a part of the active narmada-Son Fault(nSF) and confined by the Karjan River on the eastern side and by the Madhumati River on western *** bajada sequence exposed along the incised cliffs of various north flowing parallel streams has been studied in their proximal,medial and distal part. The sediments are characterized on the basis of grain size,fabric,sedimentary structures,bed geometry and sorting, and lithologs prepared from the mapped cliff *** study of sedimentary characteristics,lithofacies analysis and facies associations indicate that sediments are mainly of three types-sediments that were deposited by debris flows and sediment gravity flows,and as extensive bar *** major aggredational sequences are *** sequence is composed of coarsening-upward sequence of proximal facies overlain by fining-upward sequence of distal *** upward sequence record periods of tectonic activity related to uplift along the nSF and fan progradation,whereas fining-upward sequence results from tectonic quiescence *** presence of rhizocretions,calcium carbonate nodules and calcite sheets within the basal debris flow and sediment gravity flow indicate semi-arid climate,whereas the formation of pedoginized paleosol indicate relatively wetter climate prevailing in the study *** activity along the nSF has played dominant role by controlling the geometry and volume of bajada *** is found to be responsible for compositional and temporal distribution of bajada *** dating suggests that the bajada sediments were deposited during the later part of late *** incision of the sediments is attributed to uplift due to inversion of the lower narmada basin during the early Holocene.

目的:研究海南蒲桃(Syzygium cumini)种子提取物SC2对链脲霉素诱导的实验性糖尿病小鼠胰岛细胞再生的作用。方法:瑞士小鼠腹膜内注射链脲霉素诱导实验性糖尿病。治疗组给予口服海南蒲桃种子提取物SC2(2g/L)共21d,期间有规律地测量小鼠血糖和体质量。第20天进行口服葡萄糖耐量实验。实验结束后处死小鼠并分离组织。测量肝组织内葡萄糖-6-磷酸脱氢酶活性、肝糖元和肌糖元含量、血浆胰岛素及血浆C肽水平。结果:经SC2治疗的实验性糖尿病小鼠血糖水平恢复正常,肝组织内葡萄糖-6-磷酸脱氢酶活性升高,肝糖元和肌糖元含量升高,血浆胰岛素和C肽水平升高。组织学结果显示,SC2治疗组出现新生胰岛细胞,提示SC2具有促进胰岛细胞生成的作用。这些新生胰岛细胞可以在实验性糖尿病小鼠体内产生胰岛素。结论:本研究结果证明了海南蒲桃种子提取物SC2在胰岛再生和胰岛素分泌中的作用。这种作用结合其他的治疗策略可能在将来为临床控制糖尿病提供一个更理想的途径。

nanoscale strained-Si MOSFET physics and modeling approaches:a review

An attempt has been made to give a detailed review of strained silicon technology. Various device models have been studied that consider the effect of strain on the devices, and comparisons have been drawn. A review of some modeling issues in strained silicon technology has also been outlined. The review indicates that this technology is very much required in nanoscale MOSFETs due to its several potential benefits, and there is a strong need for an analytical model which describes the complete physics of the strain technology.

Assigning conservation value and identifying hotspots of endemic rattan diversity in the Western Ghats, India

Rattans, or canes, are one of the most important non-timber forest products supporting the livelihood of many forest-dwelling communities in South and north-eastern India. Due to increased demand for rattan products, rattans have been extracted indiscriminately from the Western Ghats, a 1600-km mountain chain running parallel to the west coast of India. Extensive harvesting, loss of habitat and poor regeneration has resulted in dwindling rattan populations, necessitating an urgent attempt to conserve existing rattan resources. In this study, using niche-modelling tools, an attempt has been made to identify areas of high species richness of rattans in the Western Ghats, one of the mega-diversity regions of the world. We have also developed conservation values for 21 economically important and endemic rattans of the Western Ghats. We identified at least two to three sites of extremely high species richness outside the existing protected area network that should be prioritized for in situ *** study emphasizes the need to develop strategies for the long-term conservation of rattans in the Western Ghats, India.

Quality of spring water used for irrigation in the Almora District of Uttarakhand, India

This paper aims to propose a quality profile of springs of the study area for irrigation. In the present study, fifty-four springs in Almora have been identified from rural as well as urban localities for calculation of irriga- tional water quality parameters during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon, 2008. Spring water samples are collected and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), na+ , K+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ , HCO3- , Cl- , and SO42- . Different irrigation quality parameters viz. salinity, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazards (MH) and permeability index (PI) are calculated for the evaluation of spring water quality for irrigation purposes. All springs are found excellent to good based on irrigation quality parameters. Based on Wilcox diagram, about 98% of the water resources are grouped as C1S1 (low-low) and C2S1 (medium-low) classes, so springs are suitable for normal irrigation.

Size effects on electrical properties of sol–gel grown chromium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles

In this communication, we report the results of the studies on electrical properties of Zn0.95Cr0.05O nanoparticles synthesized using sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction （XRD） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM） measurements were performed for the structural and microstructural behaviors of the nanoparticles. Rietveld analysis was carried out to confirm the single phasic nature. High resolution TEM （HRTEM） confirms the nanoscale nature and polycrystalline orientations in the samples. Dielectric response has been understood in the context of universal dielectric response （UDR） model along with the Koop＇s theory and Maxwell - Wagner （M-W） mechanism. Variation in ac conductivity with frequency has been discussed in detail in terms of power law fits. Results of the impedance measurements have been explained on the basis of crystal cores and crystal boundary density. Cole - cole behavior has been studied for the impedance data. For potential application of nanoparticles, average normalized change （AnC） in impedance has been estimated and discussed in the light of size effects and oxygen vacancies.

High-temperature thermodynamics of silver:Semi-empirical approach

We report high-temperature thermodynamics for fcc silver by combining ab initio phonon dynamics to empirical quadratic temperature-dependent term for anharmonic part of Helmholtz free energy. The electronic free energy is added through an interpolation scheme, which connects ambient condition free electron gas model to Thomas-Fermi *** present study shows good agreement with experimental and reported findings for several thermal properties, and the discrepancy observed in some caloric properties is addressed. The decreases in the product of volume thermal expansion coefficient and isothermal bulk modulus and in the constant volume anharmonic lattice specific heat at high temperature are the clear evidences of proper account of anharmonicity. The present study also reveals that T-2-dependent anharmonic free energy is sufficient for correct evaluation of thermal pressure and conventional Grüneisen parameter. We observe that the intrinsic phonon anharmonicity starts dominating above characteristic temperature, which is attributed to higher order anharmonicity and can be related to higher order potential derivatives. We conclude that the uncorrelated and largeamplitude lattice vibrations at high temperature raise dominating intrinsic thermal stress mechanism, which surpasses the phonon-anharmonism and requires future consideration.

Bird assemblages in natural and urbanized habitats along elevational gradient in nainital district （western Himalaya） of Uttarakhand state, India

The Indian subcontinent is amongst the biologically better known parts of the tropics and its bird fauna has been well documented. However, avian community composition and diversity along elevational gradients and amongst habitat types remains unclear in India. We attempted to estimate bird assemblages in terms of diversity, species composition, status and abun- dance in urban and forest habitats of nainital district of Uttarakhand （350-2450 m asl; 29n）, Western Himalayas. We sampled different elevational gradients and to understand the effect of urbanization and season on avian community composition. Field studies were conducted during January 2005 to January 2007. Results indicated that the forest had more complex bird community structure in terms of higher species richness （14.35 vs 8.69）, higher species diversity （Shannon＇s index 4.00 vs 3.54）, higher evenness （0.838 vs 0.811） and more rare species （17 vs 5） as compared to urban habitat. However, the abundance of 11 species was higher in urban habitats. Bird Species Richness （BSR） varied considerably among study areas （91 to 113 species）, was high- est （113 species） at mid elevation （1450-1700 m asl） and decreased （22 species） at high elevation （1900-2450 m asl）. It seems that high BSR at mid altitudes is not caused by the presence of a group of mid altitude specialists but rather that there is an over- lap in the distribution of low land and high elevation specialists at this altitude. BSR and Bird Species Diversity fluctuated across seasons but not habitat type [Current Zoology 57 （3）： 318-329,2011].

Screening of antiproliferative activity mediated through apoptosis pathway in human non-small lung cancer A-549 cells by active compounds present in medicinal plants

Objective: To explore the antiproliferative activity and apoptosis in cells caused by active compounds present in plants using different techniques. Methods: We investigated the antiproliferative effects of methanolic extracts from different parts of seven plants on A-549(lung cancer) cells and primary cell culture(chick embryo fibroblast cells, as normal cells) using MTT assay and the potent plant was fractioned further. All these fractions were screened again for anti-proliferative activity. DnA fragmentation and DAPI staining were used to study apoptosis. Quantitative real-time was used to investigate the expression of apoptoticrelated genes. LC-MS and 1 H-nMR techniques were used to identify the active compounds present. EnzCheck caspase-3 assay kit was used to measure caspase-3 activity. Results: Methanolic extract of Vitex negundo(V. negundo) was selected as a potent fraction. Among all fractions screened, ethylacetate fraction of V. negundo was selected as the most potent antiproliferative fraction and phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed the presence of secondary metabolites. Ethaylacetate fraction of V. negundo was found to cause characteristic apoptotic morphological changes and generation of ROS in A-549 cells. Ethaylacetate fraction of V. negundo also induced apoptosis in A-549 which was supported by DnA fragmentation and DAPI staining. To investigate the molecular mechanism behind the cytotoxic effect of ethaylacetate fraction of V. negundo, quantitative real-time PCR was used to measure expression levels of p53, bax, bcl2, casp-3 and casp-9. Using LC-MS and 1 H-nMR techniques, cytotoxic compounds(luteolin and p-hydroxy benzoic acid) were identified which increased casp-3 activity in a dose and time-dependent manner in A-549 treated cells. Conclusions: It is concluded from the present study that V. negundo is capable of triggering growth-inhibitive and apoptosis effects in A-549 cells, signifying that V. negundo may possesses anti-lung cancer
