Bioremediation is an eco-compatible and economical approach to counter textile dye menace. The isolated Lentinus squarrosulus AF5 was assessed for decolourization of textile azo dyes, and had shown ~93%, 88% and 70% decolorization of Reactive blue 160 (RB160), Reactive black 5 (RB5) and Amido black 10B (AB10B) respectively. Further analysis using UV-vis, HPLC, and FTIR, 1H NMR had shown the degradation of the dyes. Toxicity analysis of the metabolites was performed using seed germination and plant growth on two agriculturally important plants Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) as well as cytotoxicity analysis using the human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). The dye mix appeared inhibitory for seed germination (20% - 40%), whereas metabolites were non-inhibitory for germination. Treatment of HaCaT cells with of dye mix and metabolites led into 45% and ~100% of cell viability of HaCaT cells respectively. Therefore, metabolites following degradation of the dye mix were observed to be non-toxic.

A simple wet chemical bath deposition has been successfully deployed to fabricate zinc oxide(ZnO)nanostructures. For substrate free growth, the nanostructure is spindle like monopods. But when the nanostructures grow on the glass and quartz substrates, they are bipods(two monopods joined together base to base). Variation in the size of the spindles of the monopods and bipods and the particle size was observed due to the strain exists in the thin film due to lattice mismatch at the interface of the thin film and the substrates. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) and selected area diffraction results confirmed the hexagonal unit cell structures of the monopods and bipods. Also the growth rates of various planes are different and the growth is anisotropic. The substrate free grown monopods show visible photoluminescence(PL) at 421 nm. But the emission gets shifted by 3 and 6 nm for ZnO thin film deposited on quartz and glass substrates respectively due to interfacial strain. In case of ZnO on quartz substrate a strong ultra-violet(UV) peak was observed at 386 nm due to band edge transition. These emissions are also accompanied by few weaker emission peaks due to various defect related transition.

Unconstrained offiine handwriting recognition is a challenging task in the areas of document analysis and pattern recognition. In recent years, to sufficiently exploit the supervisory information hidden in document images, much effort has been made to integrate multi-layer perceptrons （MLPs） in either a hybrid or a tandem fashion into hidden Markov models （HMMs）. However, due to the weak learnability of MLPs, the learnt features are not necessarily optimal for subsequent recognition tasks. In this paper, we propose a deep architecture-based tandem approach for unconstrained offiine handwriting recognition. In the proposed model, deep belief networks arc adopted to learn the compact representations of sequential data, while HMMs are applied for （sub-）word recognition. We evaluate the proposed model on two publicly available datasets, i.e., RIMES and IFN/ENIT, which are based on Latin and Arabic languages respectively, and one dataset collected by ourselves called Devanagari （all Indian script）. Extensive experiments show the advantage of the proposed model, especially over the MLP-HMMs taudem approaches.

The main objective of the study is to assess the growth and expansion of public health(PH)research works by Bangladeshi authors from various perspectives such as quantum of growth,patterns of collaboration, and productivity of authorship, among others. The present research uses a scientometric technique to examine secondary literature. Between 2000 and 2015, 871literature by Bangladeshi writers and 3,71,389 literature by worldwide authors on PH were retrieved from the Scopus database and evaluated using quantitative indicators to study growth and development from various perspectives. The highest growth in terms of the number of publications has been observed in the year 2015(133) and the lowest in 2001(10). The PR(Percent of Growth Rate) shows that 2001 was the deepest decreasing year(-38%) whereas 2002was the most increasing year(90%). During the study, RGR(Relative Growth Rate) values of Bangladeshi contributions to PH literature varied from 0.16 to 0.55, with an average of 0.27. The CC(Collaborative Coefficient) value indicates that during the research period, there was a substantial amount of collaboration among the authors. At the same time, the PPA(Productivity Per Author) value(0.31) denotes that throughout the era, each Bangladeshi author produced less than half of a publication per year. The mean Activity Index(AI) during 2000-2015 was 89.14,which reflects lower activity than the world’s average in PH literature. It was also observed that research productivity in public health of Bangladesh follows Lotka’s inverse rule of author production. According to the findings, there is a strong link between public health research output in emerging and developed nations.

A middle aged, non-addict male presented with right upper abdominal pain and swelling with respiratory distress. Examination revealed central cyanosis, bipedal pitting edema with prominent epigastric and back veins. Liver was enlarged, tender, spanned 20 cm without any splenomegaly or ascites. Other systems were clinically normal. Laboratory investigations showed polymorphonuclear leucocytosis with slightly deranged liver function. Abdominal ultrasonography showed an abscess in the right lobe of the liver with compressed inferior vena cava （IVC）, middle and left hepatic veins. Arterial blood gas （ABG） documented hypoxia with orthodeoxia and air-contrast echocardiography was suggestive of an intrapulmonary shunt. A diagnosis of hepato-pulmonary syndrome （HPS） was made with near normal liver function secondary to amebic liver abscess. It reversed completely following successful treatment of the liver abscess.

Objective:To investigate the effect of Camellia(C.)sinensis in mitigating oxidative damage and reproductive toxicity in testis induced by sodium fluoride in a rat ***:Twenty-four adult male Wister rats were divided into 4 groups,with 6 rats in each *** 1 orally received distilled water(1 mL/100 g body weight)daily and served as the control group,while group 2 received drinking water with 100 ppm sodium fluoride per day for 21 consecutive days,group 3 was administered with only *** extract by gavage at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight and group 4 received drinking water with 100 ppm sodium fluoride and 100 mg/kg body weight *** leaf extract per day for 21 consecutive *** the end of the treatment,the rats were sacrificed under light ether *** gonado-somatic index,sperm count and motility,serum level of luteinizing hormone and testosterone were *** peroxidation[malondialdehyde(MDA)level],nitric oxide(NO)production,and activities of antioxidant enzymes-superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase,and reduced glutathione level(GSH)were also ***:Sodium fluoride treatment significantly decreased gonado-somatic index,sperm count and motility as well as the serum level of luteinizing hormone and testosterone(P<0.05).The histological examination of testes revealed atrophy and degenerative changes in several seminiferous tubules,along with enhanced interstitial space and a reduced number of Leydig *** was a highly significant increase in NO and MDA production(P<0.05),while SOD,catalase activities and GSH level decreased significantly(P<0.05).However,*** significantly restored testicular weight,sperm parameter,hormonal level(P<0.05),and also reversed MDA and NO generation and antioxidant enzymes activities in the testicular tissue(P<0.05).Conclusions:*** may have an ameliorative role against sodium fluoride-induced oxidative damage in the testis probably because of its antioxidant property.

Liver abscess caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei in a young man: A case report and review of literature

Pyogenic liver abscess is a common entity in Indian subcontinent and is mostly caused by gram negative bacteria. Melioidosis is not commonly seen in India and only a few cases are reported. It can give rise to multiple abscesses at different sites including liver. We report a case of isolated liver abscess caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei(B. pseudomallei) in a 29-yearold recently diagnosed diabetic, immunocompetent male. Diagnosis was made by imaging and culture of pus aspirated from the abscess and he was treated with percutaneous pigtail catheter drainage followed by antibiotics(meropenem and trimethoprim-sulphmethoxazole). Melioidosis is an emerging infection in India and has high mortality rate, so early diagnosis and promptmanagement is warranted which requires clinical vigilance and an intensive microbiological workup. Clinicians should be aware of isolated liver abscess caused by B. pseudomallei in appropriate clinical settings.
