Prognostic nutritional index in predicting survival of patients with gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma: A systematic review

CYP2E1 immunoglobulin G4 subclass antibodies after desflurane anesthesia

AIM: To investigate CYP2E1 IgG4 autoantibody levels and liver biochemical markers in adult patients after anesthesia with desflurane. METHODS: Forty patients who were > 18 years old and undergoing elective surgery under general anes-thesia with desflurane were studied. Alpha-glutathione-S-transferase(aGST) and IgG4 antibodies againstCYP2E1 were measured preoperatively and 96 h post-operatively, as well as complete blood count, prothrom-bin time(PT), activated partial thromboplastin time(aPTT), international normalized ratio(INR), aspartate aminotransferase(SGOT), alanine aminotransferase(SGPT), g-glutamyl-transpeptidase(gGT), alkaline phosphatase, total serum proteins, albumin and bili-rubin. A separate group of 8 patients who received re-gional anesthesia was also studied for calibration of the methodology used for CYP2E1 IgG4 and aGST measure-ments. Student's t-test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for comparison of the continuous variables, and Fisher's exact test was used for the categorical variables. In the context of this work,a prototype hybrid photoacoustic(PA)and optical system for the on-line monitoring of laser cleaning procedures is *** developed apparatus has enabled the detection of MHz frequency range acoustic waves generated during the laser ablation *** intrinsically generated PA signals combined with high resolution optical images provide the opportunity to follow the cleaning process accurately and in real *** mock-ups have been used to demonstrate the potential of this novel technique with emphasis given to applications that refer to the restoration of Cultural Heritage(CH)*** this purpose,the real time monitoring of the laser assisted removal of unwanted encrustation from stonework has been achieved using IR and UV *** novel approach has allowed for the precise determination of the critical number of laser pulses required for the elimination of the encrustation layer,while highlighting the dominant ablation mechanisms according to the irradiation *** promising results obtained using the prototype hybrid PA and optical system can open up new perspectives in the monitoring of laser cleaning interventions,promoting an improved restoration outcome.

Scattering Relations for Two-Dimensional Electromagnetic Waves in Chiral Media

We consider the scattering of time-harmonic plane waves by an infinitely long penetrable chiral cylinder. The electromagnetic scattering problem is reduced to a transmission problem for a system of two-dimensional Helmholtz equations. We prove the classical reciprocity principle, a general scattering theorem and an optical theorem in R2. Using Herglotz wave functions we define the corresponding far field operator. Applying the general scattering theorem useful relations are proved for the reconstruction of the scatterer. We also prove that for real chirality measure of the penetrable scatterer the far field operator has a countable number of eigenvalues which lie on a circle.

Using circulating tumor cells to advance precision medicine in prostate cancer

The field of circulating tumor cell(CTC)enrichment has seen many emerging technologies in recent years,which have resulted in the identification and monitoring of clinically relevant,CTC-based biomarkers that can be analyzed routinely without invasive *** molecular platforms have been used to investigate the molecular profile of the disease,from high throughput gene expression analyses down to single cell biological *** established presence of CTC heterogeneity nevertheless constitutes a challenge for cell isolation as the several subpopulations can potentially display different molecular characteristics;in this scenario,careful consideration must be given to the isolation approach,whereas methods that discriminate against certain subpopulations may result in the exclusion of CTCs that carry biological *** the context of prostate cancer,CTC molecular interrogation can enable longitudinal monitoring of key biological features during treatment with substantial clinical impact,as several biomarkers could predict tumor response to AR signaling inhibitors(abiraterone,enzalutamide)or standard chemotherapy(taxanes).Thus,CTCs represent a valuable opportunity to personalize medicine in current clinical practice.

Risk Factors Associated with Cephalalgia during Pregnancy and Postpartum in a Sample of Greek Women

Background: The two most common types of cephalalgia in women are migraine and tension-type cephalalgia. Cephalalgia is associated with an increased risk of developing pregnancy complications or psychological difficulties. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and the characteristics of maternal cephalalgia during pregnancy and early postpartum and identify associated risk factors. Study Design: This study was conducted between May 2012 and August 2012. The study population comprised 170 mothers. The interviews were conducted in a postnatal ward during the first postpartum week and information on the characteristics of maternal cephalalgia before and during pregnancy was collected. Data regarding previous history of cephalalgia, pregnancy and postpartum health history, as well as the mode of delivery were also recorded. Mothers were given a cephalalgia diary in order to record medication use, as well as cephalalgia attack frequency, severity (5-level scale) and duration. The following surveys were administered: Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Mediterranean Diet Score (Medi Score), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Women Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) within the first week postpartum. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 19. The level of statistical significance was set at p Results: Maternal self-reported cephalalgia in pregnancy and early postpartum was significantly associated with scores in EPDS (depressive symptoms) (p = 0.005), hypertension (p Conclusion: Pregnancy and early postpartum is a graceful period in women with cephalalgia. However, cephalalgia is associated with an increased risk of developing pregnancy complications or psychological difficulties. Further studies should elucidate the safety and recommended use of cephalalgia medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Inverse Electromagnetic Scattering by a Penetrable Chiral Object

We consider the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of determining the shape of a perfectly conducting core inside a penetrable chiral body. We prove the well-posedness of the corresponding direct scattering problem by the variational method. We focus on a uniqueness result for the inverse scattering problem that is under what conditions an obstacle can be identified by the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern corresponding to all time-harmonic incident planes waves with a fixed wave number. To this end, we establish a chiral mixed reciprocity relation that connects the electric far-field pattern of a spherical wave with the scattered field of a plane wave.

The Aromatic Plant <i>Satureja horvatii</i>ssp. <i>macrophylla</i>Induces Apoptosis and Cell Death to the A549 Cancer Cell Line

S. horvatii ssp. macrophylla (Lamiaceae) is an endemic aromatic plant of Greece and is used as a culinary herb. In the present study we explored its possible anticancer activity through the induction of apoptosis on cancer cells using A549 cell line as a model. The cytotoxic effects and the type of cell death (apoptosis/necrosis) were evaluated with biochemical and morphological criteria. The total methanol extract of S. horvatii ssp. macrophylla revealed forty two components, of which carvacrol was the major constituent (43.2%). Only a minor portion of them (3.41%) was contained in the active working plant extract solution which was used for cell treatment. This study indicates that extract of S. horvatii spp. macrophylla, which belongs to carvacrol chemotype, can induce both apoptosis and necrosis to A549 cancer cell line.

Psychological Factors Affecting the Family’s Satisfaction of Patients in an Intensive Care Unit: The Dominant Role of Self-Compassion and Resilience

Background: Family members of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients are subject to a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. This psychological distress inevitably affects their perception of the quality of care that their relative receives. The aim of this study is to enlighten the effect of psychopathology, resilience, and self-compassion on the satisfaction of family members of ICU patients and examine the role of self-compassion and resilience as explaining variables of the psychopathology and satisfaction relation. Methods: One hundred and seventy-six family members participated in the study. Each participant completed the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90-R), the Family Satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit (FS-ICU) questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Mental Endurance Scale (CD-RISC), and the Self-Compassion scale (SCS). Analysis of variance and path analysis was applied in order to test the research hypotheses. Results: The patient’s age, patient’s gender, type of relation, and age of the family member did not have a statistically significant direct or interaction effect on the satisfaction of the family members. The psychopathology had a significant negative correlation with the total satisfaction of the family members. The self-compassion was found to have a significant direct effect on psychopathology and a significant indirect effect on satisfaction via resilience, while both resilience and self-compassion had significant direct or indirect effects on satisfaction. Self-compassion was found to eliminate the mediation role of resilience on psychopathology and the resilience and psychopathology effect on satisfaction. Conclusions: Self-compassion emerged as the most important personality characteristic concerning the satisfaction of family members of ICU patients.
