This study deals with the valorization of natural residues into activated carbon prepared from waste“Baobab fruit shell”from the Fatick Region,***,after the preparation of the baobab shell,a chemical activation with orthophosphoric acid H3PO4(85%)was performed followed by pyrolysis at 530°*** eliminate possible carbonization residues,the activated carbons were impregnated in 0.1 M hydrochloric acid and/or soda solutions and then washed thoroughly with distilled water to obtain a pH between 6.5 and *** latter were then dried in an oven at 105°C for 24 h.A characterization was carried out to determine the moisture content,the ash content,the iodine and methylene blue indices,the surface functions and the pH at zero charge point(pHpzc).The moisture and ash contents were 1.87%and 0.72%,*** iodine and peroxide indices obtained were 939,09 mg/g and 575.73 mg/g,*** function analysis by Boehm’s method showed that the acidic functions were higher than the basic functions and their pHpzc was lower than *** best efficiency of methylene blue removal was 99.75%and was obtained with a mass of 0.150 g of activated carbon,pH equal to 10,an initial concentration of methylene blue of 200 mg/L and a contact time of 35 min.

The baobab, Adansonia digitata L. plays an important role in the economy of local populations. The oil from the seeds of the baobab fruit is nowadays highly prized because of its numerous cosmetic and therapeutic applications and its composition of unsaturated fatty acids, sterols and tocopherols. However, unlike refined oils, locally extracted baobab oil has not undergone purification operations to ensure its quality. Only a filtration on special cloths is carried out after decantation. Indeed, the oil obtained after pressing is cloudy because of the presence of various impurities. It therefore requires treatment operations to make it more attractive and of higher quality. Therefore, in order to provide innovative solutions to local companies to improve the quality of vegetable oils, a study of clarification (treatment) of crude oil is necessary. An experimental device has been developed in the laboratory. It includes a glass column and a filter bed of dune sand and activated carbon. This study has shown the efficiency of the experimental device. Indeed, the activated carbon, thanks to its adsorbing power, has allowed a significant decrease in turbidity at the 5% threshold, from 14.61 NTU for the raw oil to 0.08 NTU for the oil filtered on 3% carbon and 0.033 NTU for the oil filtered on 5% carbon. That is to say an abatement higher than 95%. This decrease in turbidity could be correlated with the decrease in brown index from 187.39a for the initial crude oil to 128.53d for the oil treated with 3% activated carbon versus 187.59a for the oil filtered on cloths. The lowest brown index was observed with the filtration using 5% activated carbon (35.99b). Thus, for the yellowness index, only the filtration on 5% charcoal allowed to obtain a significant decrease in yellowness. Temporary ponds play substantial roles in preserving biodiversity in the *** study investigated the influence of anthropic and eco-hydrological factors on the plant diversity around two grazed ponds and one ungrazed pond in Ferlo,northern *** phytoecological transects were established per *** each transect,homogenous herbaceous vegetation units were identified and characterized(herbaceous cover,exposure,soil texture,soil moisture and pH,average height and slope).The herbaceous flora comprised 55 species,41 genera and 22 families across the three *** of the Poaceae,particularly Eragrostis tremula and Enteropogon prieurii,mostly colonized the grazed ponds,while the ungrazed pond favored other families’species such as Achyranthes sp.,Commelina forsskaolii,Corchorus *** Shannon’s diversity index(H′)of Wendu Marodi(ungrazed pond)was slightly higher(4.9 bits)than that of Belel Lougal and Belel Sow(grazed ponds)with 4.8 and 4.5 bits,*** equitability indices were relatively high in the three ponds(0.85,0.83 and 0.78).Eco-ecological factors distinguished four species’groupings:a Tribulus terrestris grouping colonizing the constraining and over-grazed zones,a Digitaria horizontalis grouping,and Chloris barbata grouping found in the transition zones,and an Achyranthes aspera grouping in the wetlands,where woody plants were strongly present and the anthropic action *** study highlighted the importance of maintaining a landscape mosaic of ungrazed or semi-protected ponds and grazed ponds to preserve the herbaceous floristic diversity in the center of Ferlo(Senegal)and the Sahel in general.

Influence of the Temperature on Coated Bituminous of Road Structures in Senegal (West Africa)

The Senegalese road network is strongly influenced in the long term by seasonal variations in climate and weather conditions. Indeed, much of the damage is due to these environmental factors. The objective of this paper is to study the behaviour of bituminous structures under the effect of high temperatures. Material samples were taken for a physico-mechanical characterization of the coated components. The results show that Marshall creep (2.87, 3.39, 5, 5.5 mm) and the bitumen penetrability increase with the increasing of temperatures respectively from 34°C to 45°C and from 20°C to 50°C. Marshall Stability drops from 15.81 kN to 11.31 kN for temperatures between 34°C and 45°C. The simulation carried out on Alize-LCPC shows an increase in distortions of traction at the basis of the rolling layer and at the top of the platform if temperatures vary between 34°C and 45°C. This work makes it possible to conform that the bituminous concrete is thermally sensitive and the hypothesis of fixing the constant modulus of the bituminous layers in Senegal for all projects remains unsuitable for a good dimensioning of sustainable road structures. The knowledge of the equivalent regional temperature will make it possible to produce quality pavements with a long lifespan.

Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Congenital Heart Disease with Left-to-Right Shunt: According to a Retrospective Study at Albert Royer’s National Children’s Hospital Center

Pulmonary arterial hypertension PAH is a progressive disease characterized by an increase in pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance. It often complicates congenital heart disease with a left-to-right shunt. The objective of this study is to evaluate the evolutionary profile of the pulmonary pressures of children with congenital heart disease with left-to-right shunt and to identify the factors favoring an evolution towards PAH. This is a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study over a period of four years and six months (from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2020) at the Center National d’Enfant Albert Royer in Dakar on a series of 87 cases. The hospital frequency was 3.98 per thousand, and the incidence of PAH was 9.44%. The sex ratio of 0.74. The average age was 44.76 months. The average time between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of heart disease is 78.81 days. Dyspnea was found in 70.11% of cases, the burst of pulmonary B2 was found in 55%. Global heart failure was noted in 39.08% of cases. Cardiomegaly was found in 89.66% and pulmonary hypervascularization was found in 57.72% of cases. CIV was present in 54.02% of cases, followed by PCA in 21.14% and CAVc in 18.39% of cases. furosemide was used in 97.70% of cases and Captopril in 74.71% of cases. Sildenafil was used in 10.34% of patients, and 12.64% of patients benefited from surgical management. Eisenmenger syndrome was found in 12.64% of patients. PAH in these heart diseases is a formidable and frequent complication, due to an increase in precapillary flow. The major improvement in mortality and morbidity is early surgical management, in the first months of life, to prevent pulmonary vascular disease.

The building of the infrastructure on the compressible and saturated soils presents sometimes major difficulties. The infrastructure undergoes strong settlement that can be due to several phenomena of consolidation of the soils. The latter results from the dissipation of the excess pore pressure and deformation of the solid skeleton. Terzaghi theory led to the equation modeling the dissipation of excess pore pressure. The objective of this study is to establish solutions, by analytical and numerical method, of the equation of the pore water pressure. We considered a compressible saturated soil layer, between two drainage areas and subjected to a uniform load. Separation of variables is used to obtain an analytical solution and the finite element method for the numerical solution. The results obtained by the finite element method have validated those of analytical resolution.

Cardiac Echography in Pediatrics at the Regional Hospital of Diourbel: Indication and Result

Childhood heart disease is a real public health problem. In our contexts, care remains a major challenge. Doppler echocardiography remains the essential examination for diagnosis. The objective of our study was to describe the different clinical indications for cardiac ultrasound in children and the main pediatric heart diseases at the Diourbel Heinrich Lübke Regional Hospital. This was a descriptive and analytical retrospective study spanning from 2020 to 2022;covering a series of 140 cases. The study was carried out using patient clinical observation sheets and consultation sheets. We identified 140 ultrasounds. The average age of patients was 35.96 months with extremes of 0.03 months and 192 months. The female sex was predominant, with an M/F sex ratio of 0.72. Ultrasound was systematically requested in 67.14% of the study population. The indications found were mainly: heart murmur, polymalformative syndrome, respiratory failure, bronchiolitis, cardiomegaly, suspicion of heart disease, cardiomegaly, pre-therapeutic and pre-operative assessment. A total of 71 cardiac abnormalities were found in 65 patients, i.e. a prevalence of 46.42%. Congenital heart disease was more frequent (found in 49 patients, a prevalence of 35%) and was dominated by the CIA. There was a female predominance in almost all heart diseases except in the case of endocarditis where codominance is found. Our study has made it possible, through echocardiography, to evaluate the indications for echocardiography in children, to determine the prevalence of heart disease in children and also to assess the relevance of requests for echocardiography.

Modeling a Local Geoid: Application in Thies, Senegal

Many applications in geodesy, hydrography and engineering require determining heights linked to the geoid. Direct leveling, which is the traditional method of obtaining these elevations, is slow, time consuming and expensive. The contribution of space techniques can make it possible to overcome these constraints provided that we have a precision geoid model compatible with that obtained by the GNSS method. There are today relatively precise regional geoid models, at least outside of mountain ranges, in all developed countries, which is not yet the case in developing countries like Senegal. An alternative is to use local models restricted to a small area. Thus, this study aims to produce a geoid model by combining multi-source data for the city of Thies intended mainly to support leveling operations by GNSS. To achieve this objective, direct precision leveling and GNSS leveling (static mode) were carried out covering the study area. The reference points used are, among others, those of the RRS04 (Reference Network of Senegal 2004) and the NGAO53 (General Leveling of West Africa 1953). Additionally, gravimetric measurements were conducted using the Sensor Play-Data Recorder application. The calculation of the model was carried out by the SRBF (Spherical Radial Basis Function) method using the PAGravf4.5 software. The SRBF method uses EGM08 to first calculate height and gravity anomalies. These are then compared with the raw data in order to determine the residuals which will allow the model to be refined. In order to validate our model, control points (GNSS/leveled) were chosen based on a homogeneous geographical distribution in the area in order to evaluate their altitude. An accuracy of less than 2 cm was obtained. Comparing our model with the existing local model GGSV12v1 shows that our model is more accurate.

Efficacy of Different Fungicides against Mango Anthracnose in Senegalese Soudanian Agroclimate

Anthracnose is the one of the most devastating diseases of mango produced in the southern part of Senegal. The field trials against post harvest rot due to anthracnose took place in three orchards over two production seasons, in 2009 and 2010. Three systemic fungicides (thiophanate methyl, azoxystrobin and myclobutanyl) and one contact fungicide (mancozeb) were tested for their efficacy. The first treatments in 2009 took place in the rainy season, while 20% of mangoes on trees exhibited anthracnose lesions. At ripening stage, 100% of fruits from non treated control mango trees were affected by anthracnose and got rotten, while between 73.2% and 80% of mangoes ripened free of disease when treated with thiophanate methyl. With the treatment with azoxystrobin, between 46.6% and 60% of fruits were not infected. Treatment with myclobutanyl was less effective. This level of effectiveness was clearly improved in 2010 by preventive spraying, days ahead of onset of the rainy season, before the appearance of anthracnose symptoms on fruits. The level of effectiveness was higher respectively for thiophanate methyl (between 96% and 100% of fruits not infected) and azoxystrobin (between 84% and 96% of fruits not infected).

Cartography of Landslide Susceptibility around the Dias Horst and Thies Cliff-Senegal

The aim of this work is to map the susceptibility of sites to landslides. To assess the susceptibility of the zone, GIS techniques were used. Susceptibility factors are selected and split into two groups: active and passive factors. Passive factors regroup all the intrinsic conditions existing on the field at all times. The active factors or triggering factors are present sporadically and are added to the passive factors to trigger a landslide. With the weighted overlay method using ArcGIS?, four scenarios have been developed. A first scenario where only passive factors are combined and three scenarios for which we have for each scenario the passive factors combined with an active factor. With these different scenarios, five levels of susceptibility are obtained in the zone. These levels range from very low to very high susceptibility. For the different scenarios, the results show that the zone consists mainly of very low to low susceptibility with at least 61% of the area, followed by moderate susceptibility (23.54% to 38.24%) and last land with high susceptibility to very high with less than 1% of the surface. Fields with high to very high susceptibility are located on the slopes of the hills. Among the active factors, only the rainfall significantly modifies the percentage of land susceptible to landslide but remains in the field of moderate susceptibility. The predicted susceptibilities are closer to the observed landslides around the Thies Cliff than to the Dias Horst.
