Neuroendocrine carcinomas arising in ulcerative colitis:Coincidences or possible correlations?

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） are at increased risk of colorectal malignancies. Adenocarcinoma is the commonest type of colorectal neoplasm associated with ulcerative colitis （UC） and Crohn＇s disease, but other types of epithelial and non-epithelial tumors have also been described in inflamed bowel. With regards to non-epithelial malignancies, lymphomas and sarcomas represent the largest group of tumors reported in association with IBD, especially in immunosuppressed patients. Carcinoids and in particular neuroendocrine neoplasms other than carcinoids （NENs） are rare tumors and are infrequently described in the setting of IBD. Thus, this association requires further investigation. We report two cases of neoplasms arising in mild left-sided UC with immuno- histochemical staining for neuroendocrine markers： a large cell and a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the rectum. The two patients were different in age （35 years vs 77 years） and disease duration （11 years vs 27 years）, and both had never received immunosuppressant drugs. Although the patients underwent regular endoscopic and histological follow-up, the two neoplasms were locally advanced at diagnosis. One of the two patients developed multiple liver metastases and died 15 mo after diagnosis. These findings confirm the aggressiveness and the poor prognosis of NENs compared to colorectal adenocarcinoma. While carcinoids seem to be coincidentally associated with IBD, NENs may also arise in this setting. In fact, long-standing inflammation could be directly responsible for the development of pancellular dysplasia involving epithelial, goblet, Paneth and neuroendocrine cells. It has yet to be established which IBD patients have a higher risk of developing NENs.

The Literati＇s Polyphonic Answers to Social Changes in Late Imperial China

The article aims to rethink the pluralistic intellectual currents and social changes of the last centuries in China： How literati reacted to the historical changes, the economic developments, the collapse of the hierarchical order, and the social mobility from the end of the Ming to the middle of the Qing dynasty. Urbanisation, the great silver inflow, the acceleration of trade, and social mobility raised new challenges to the orthodox view of the world and to Neo-Confucian norms. These new attitudes of the Chinese literati--which can be inferred both from literary and philosophical works--uncover new attitudes in the mental structure of the intellectual strata of the time. In the history of ideas we notice a progressive detachment from the orthodox view of the conflictual relationship between principle and desires, especially in the ambit of the Taizhou school. The elaboration of a new anthropological mindset aimed at the rehabilitation of passions and desires culminated with Li Zhi. This trend went on in the Qing period, from Wang Fuzhi to Dai Zhen. In literature, a similar trend, the so-called ＂cult of qing,＂ can be found with the moral justification of emotion-desire （establishing emotion as a genuine and active source of virtue）, and with the vitalistic identification of emotions as the source of life and reproduction. Another indication of change is the challenge of common and accepted truisms through the praise of ＂folly＂ in real life situations and literary works： To be ＂crazy＂ and ＂foolish＂ became a sign of distinction among certain intellectual circles, in contrast with the pedant orthodox scholars and officials and the vulgar nouveaux ziches. The unconventional character of the anti-hero Baoyu is emblematic, with his aversion for any kind of official ceremony and convention, his abnormal sensibility and impractical and naive mentality, and his consciousness of being different from others. Use of Wehner-Schulze machine to evaluate pavement skid resistance:A review

Pavement skid resistance plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety and avoiding *** the past,the laboratory evaluation of the skid resistance was carried out by studying only the coarse aggregates of the wearing *** overcome this drawback,the Wehner-Schulze(WS)machine was developed in Germany in the *** equipment,composed of a polishing unit and a measuring unit,has great potential in predicting pavement skid resistance and its evolution over time,but is still little known in the pavement community(especially outside Europe).For these reasons,there is a need of a comprehensive review of the existing technical-scientific literature concerning the use of the WS ***,this paper focuses on the main factors affecting the skid resistance in WS tests,the correlation of WS data with other laboratory test methods and with field skid resistance/polishing,and the available prediction models that have been validated through WS *** critical analysis of the existing literature highlights that it is possible to correlate WS data with typical skid resistance field measurements as well as WS polishing with traffic polishing,but further efforts are needed in this *** work should focus especially on open-graded mixtures and innovative asphalt mixtures(e.g.,containing recycled materials and additives).From the perspective of pavement management,based on a theoretical background,the WS test results could be used as starting point for simplified prediction models of the in-situ skid resistance.

Clinical significance of erectile dysfunction developing after acute coronary event： exception to the rule or confirmation of the artery size hypothesis？

Erectile dysfunction （ED） has been found to frequently precedes the onset of coronary artery disease （CAD）, representing an early marker of subclinical vascular disease, included CAD. Its recognition is, therefore, a ＂window opportunity＂ to prevent a coronary event by aggressive treatment of cardiovascular risk factors. The artery size hypothesis （ASH） has been proposed as a putative mechanism to explain the relationship between ED and CAD. Since atherosclerosis is a systemic disorder all major vascular beds should be affected to the same extent. However, symptoms at different points in the system rarely become evident at the same time. This is likely the result of smaller vessels （i.e. the penile artery） being able to less well tolerate the same amount of plaque when compared with larger ones （i.e. the coronary artery）. If true, ED will develop before CAD. We present a case in which ED developed after a coronary event yet before a coronary recurrence potentially representing a late marker of vascular progression. Reasons for this unusual sequence are discussed as they might still fit the ASH.

A formal model for ledger management systems based on contracts and temporal logic

A key component of blockchain technology is the ledger,viz.,a database that,unlike standard databases,keeps in memory the complete history of past transactions as in a notarial archive for the benefit of any future *** second-generation blockchains such as Ethereum,the ledger is coupled with smart contracts,which enable the automation of transactions associated with agreements between the parties of a financial or commercial *** coupling of smart contracts and ledgers provides the technological background for very innovative application areas,such as Decentralized Autonomous Organizations(DAOs),Initial Coin Offerings(ICOs),and Decentralized Finance(DeFi),which propelled blockchains beyond cryptocurrencies that were the only focus of first generation blockchains,such as ***,the currently used implementation of smart contracts as arbitrary programming constructs has made them susceptible to dangerous bugs that can be exploited maliciously and has moved their semantics away from that of legal *** propose here to recompose the split and recover the reliability of databases by formalizing a notion of contract modeled as a finite-state automaton with well-defined computational characteristics derived from encoding in terms of allocations of resources to actors,as an alternative to the approach based on *** complete the work,we use temporal logic as the basis for an abstract query language that is effectively suited to the historical nature of the information kept in the ledger.

A Novel Cu–GNPs Nanocomposite with Improved Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Classical powder metallurgy followed by either hot isostatic pressing（HIPing） or repressing–annealing process was used to produce Cu–graphene nanoplatelets（GNPs） nanocomposites in this work. A wet mixing method was used to disperse the graphene within the matrix. The results show that a uniform dispersion of GNPs at low graphene contents could be achieved, whereas agglomeration of graphene was revealed at higher graphene contents. Density evaluations showed that the relative density of pure copper and copper composites increased by using the post-processing ***, it should be noticed that the efficiency of HIPing was remarkably higher than repressing–annealing process, and through the HIPing, fully dense samples were achieved. The Vickers hardness results showed that the reconsolidation steps can improve the mechanical strength of the specimens up to 50% owing to the progressive porosity elimination after reconsolidation. The thermal conductivity results of pure copper and composites at high temperatures showed that the postprocessing techniques could enhance the conductivity of materials significantly.

Study of the robustness of a low-temperature dual-pressure process for removal of CO2 from natural gas

The growing use of energy by most of world population and the consequent increasing demand for energy are making unexploited low quality gas reserves interesting from an industrial point of view. To meet the required specifications for a natural gas grid, some compounds need to be removed from the sour stream. Because of the high content of undesired compounds （i.e., CO2） in the stream to be treated, traditional purification processes may be too energy intensive and the overall system may result unprofitable, therefore new technologies are under study. In this work, a new process for the purification of natural gas based on a low temperature distillation has been studied, focusing on the dynamics of the system. The robustness of the process has been studied by dynamic simulation of an industrial-scale plant, with particular regard to the performances when operating conditions are changed. The results show that the process can obtain the methane product with a high purity and avoid the solidification of carbon dioxide.

The relationships between selected soil properties and caesium-137 identify organic carbon,nitrogen and water soluble phenols as indicators of soil erosion processes in different forest stands

In the last few decades,the use of environmental radionuclides,particularly caesium-137(^(137)Cs),represented one of the most valid methods for estimating soil ***,the cost associated with the use of the equipment needed for radiometric analyses is still high and,for this reason,finding more easily measurable indicators can be *** is a strong correlation between^(137)Cs,organic carbon(OC),nitrogen(N)and water soluble phenols(WSP)exists,indicating the latter parameters as possible early indicators of soil *** on the above assumptions,the main purpose of this work is to identify specific soil chemical parameters able to indicate early triggering of soil ***,several soil parameters such as pH,electric conductivity(EC),WSP,OC,N and C/N have been evaluated against^(137)Cs and on a comparative *** addition,since the rate of soil erosion depends on the degree of coverage and canopy structure,two different tree species(Pinus nigra laricio *** Fagus sylvatica L.)have been considered in this contribution in which ten different scenarios of forest management have been *** results show that the reduction in tree cover of managed sites triggers erosion and nutrient loss *** has been observed that the loss of^(137)Cs,compared to the control areas,is closely correlated with those of WSP,OC and *** parameters(WSP,OC and N),more easily assessable,can be a valid tool to understand easily,triggering of erosive phenomena.
