Genome-resolved metagenomics of Venice Lagoon surface sediment bacteria reveals high biosynthetic potential and metabolic plasticity as successful strategies in an impacted environment

Bacteria living in sediments play essential roles in marine ecosystems and deeper insights into the ecology and biogeochemistry of these largely unexplored organisms can be obtained from‘omics’***,we characterized metagenome-assembled-genomes(MAGs)from the surface sediment microbes of the Venice Lagoon(northern Adriatic Sea)in distinct sub-basins exposed to various natural and anthropogenic *** were explored for biodiversity,major marine metabolic processes,anthropogenic activity-related functions,adaptations at the microscale,and biosynthetic gene *** from 126 MAGs,a non-redundant dataset of 58 was compiled,the majority of which(35)belonged to(Alpha-and Gamma-)*** the broad microbial metabolic repertoire(including C,N,and S metabolisms)the potential to live without oxygen emerged as one of the most important *** was also found as a successful *** analysis showed that different MAGs encoded the same metabolic patterns(e.g.,C fixation,sulfate oxidation)thus suggesting metabolic *** and toxic compounds resistance genes were coupled,a condition that could promote the spreading of these genetic *** showed a high biosynthetic potential related to antimicrobial and biotechnological classes and to organism defense and interactions as well as adaptive strategies for micronutrient uptake and cellular *** results highlighted that bacteria living in an impacted environment,such as the surface sediments of the Venice Lagoon,may benefit from metabolic plasticity as well as from the synthesis of a wide array of secondary metabolites,promoting ecosystem resilience and stability toward environmental pressures.

Hot charge carriers(HC)are photoexcited electrons and holes that exist in nonequilibrium high-energy states of photoactive *** cooling time and rapid extraction are the current challenges for the development of future innovative HC-based optoelectronic devices,such as HC solar cells(HCSCs),hot energy transistors(HETs),HC photocatalytic reactors,and lasing *** on a thorough analysis of the basic mechanisms of HC generation,thermalization,and cooling dynamics,this review outlines the various possible strategies to delay the HC cooling as well as to speed up their *** materials with slow cooling behavior,including perovskites and other semiconductors,are thoroughly *** addition,the opportunities for the generation of plasmon-induced HC through surface plasmon resonance and their technological applications in hybrid nanostructures are discussed in *** judiciously designing the plasmonic nanostructures,the light coupling into the photoactive layer and its optical absorption can be greatly enhanced as well as the successful conversion of incident photons to HC with tunable energies can also be ***,the future outlook of HC in optoelectronics is highlighted which will provide great insight to the research community.

Photocatalytic activity of Eu-doped ZnO prepared by supercritical antisolvent precipitation route:When defects become virtues

The aim of this work is to determine the structural and optical properties of Eu-doped ZnO powders prepared by supercritical antisolvent precipitation route(SAS)and to correlate the physico-chemical features with the photocatalytic activity under UV *** and EPR spectroscopy highlight the introduction of novel defects(mainly singly and doubly ionized oxygen vacancies,and oxygen interstitials)on the Eu-doped ZnO samples,which confer higher hydrophilicity to the doped samples with respect to bare ZnO,as evidenced by FT-IR ***,photoluminescence spectra show that the presence of Eu^(3+) totally quenches the visible light emission typical of bare ZnO,which mainly results from the recombination of photogenerated holes at defective *** prepared samples were tested both for the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet dye(CV)and for the partial oxidation of ferulic acid under UV *** photocatalytic activity results evidence of a higher ability of Eu-doped photocatalysts to degrade CV and ferulic acid,while higher selectivity values towards vanillin are obtained in the presence of bare *** higher activity of Eu-doped ZnO photocatalysts is linked to the stabilization of photogenerated holes and to their higher hydrophilicity,both brought by the generation of defective sites induced by the presence of Eu^(3+) ions within the ZnO lattice.

The potentially crucial role of quasi-particle interferences for the growth of silicene on graphite

A comprehensive picture of the initial stages of silicene growth on graphite is *** is shown that quasiparticle interferences play a crucial role in the formation of the observed silicene *** propose,on one hand,that the charge modulations caused by those quantum interferences serve as templates and guide the incoming Si atoms to self-assemble to the unique(√3 x√3)R30°honeycomb atomic *** the other hand,their limited extension limits the growth to about 150 Si atoms under our present deposition *** here proposed electrostatic interaction finally explains the unexpected stability of the observed silicene islands over time and with *** the robust guiding nature of those quantum interferences during the early growth phase,we demonstrate that the window of experimental conditions for silicene growth is quite narrow,making it an extremely challenging experimental ***,it is shown that the experimentally observed threedimensional silicon clusters might very well be the simple result of the end of the silicene growth resulting from the limited extent of the quasi-particle interferences.

Spontaneous posterior vitreous detachment(PVD)is a common age-related condition in which prevalence tends to increase with *** PVD can cause the onset of symptoms that include visual disturbances,myodesopsia and *** goal of this short review was to provide a quick glance at the important factors related to PVD based on current literature in this field,which includes incidence,symptoms,diagnosis,risk factors,and education for patients with acute symptoms,and *** take home message is that an ophthalmic examination at the onset of symptoms is of utmost importance,considering that irreversible sight-threatening complications can be prevented if diagnosed and treated promptly.

Improved Peptidyl Linkers for Self-Assembly of Semiconductor Quantum Dot Bioconjugates

We demonstrate improved peptide linkers which allow both conjugation to biomolecules such as DNA and self-assembly with luminescent semiconductor quantum dots.A hexahistidine peptidyl sequence was generated by standard solid phase peptide synthesis and modified with the succinimidyl ester of iodoacetamide to yield a thiol-reactive iodoacetyl polyhistidine *** reactive peptide was conjugated to dye-labeled thiolated DNA which was utilized as a model target *** gel electrophoresis and fluorescence resonance energy transfer analysis confirmed that the linker allowed the DNA to self-assemble with quantum dots via metal-affinity driven *** contrast to previous peptidyl linkers that were based on disulfide exchange and were thus labile to reduction,the reactive haloacetyl chemistry demonstrated here results in a more stable thioether bond linking the DNA to the peptide which can withstand strongly reducing environments such as the intracellular *** thiol groups occur naturally in proteins,can be engineered into cloned proteins,inserted into nascent peptides or added to DNA during synthesis,the chemistry demonstrated here can provide a simple method for self-assembling a variety of stable quantum dot bioconjugates.

Most financial signals show time dependency that,combined with noisy and extreme events,poses serious problems in the parameter estimations of statistical ***,when addressing asset pricing,portfolio selection,and investment strategies,accurate estimates of the relationship among assets are as necessary as are delicate in a time-dependent *** this regard,fundamental tools that increasingly attract research interests are precision matrix and graphical models,which are able to obtain insights into the joint evolution of financial *** this paper,we present a robust divergence estimator for a time-varying precision matrix that can manage both the extreme events and time-dependency that affect financial time ***,we provide an algorithm to handle parameter estimations that uses the“maximization–minimization”*** apply the methodology to synthetic data to test its ***,we consider the cryptocurrency market as a real data application,given its remarkable suitability for the proposed method because of its volatile and unregulated nature.

Assessment of possible impacts of climate change on the hydrological regimes of different regions in China

The aim of this work is to investigate the soil water budget across China by means of hydrological modeling under current and future climate conditions and to evaluate the sensitivity to soil parameters. For this purpose, observed precipitation and temperature data(1981-2010) and climate simulations(2021-2050, 2071-2100) at high resolution(about 14 km) on a large part of China are used as weather forcing. The simulated weather forcing has been bias corrected by means of the distribution derived quantile mapping method to eliminate the effects of systematic biases in current climate modeling on water cycle components. As hydrological models, two 1D models are tested: TERRA-ML and HELP. Concerning soil properties, two datasets, provided respectively by Food and Agriculture Organization and U.S. Department of Agriculture, are separately tested. The combination of two hydrological models, two soil parameter datasets and three weather forcing inputs(observations, raw and bias corrected climate simulations) results in ?ve different simulation *** study highlights how the choice of some approaches or soil parameterizations can affect the results both in absolute and in relative terms and how these differences could be highly related to weather forcing in inputs or investigated soil. The analyses point out a decrease in average water content in the shallower part of the soil with different extents according to climate zone, concentration scenario and soil/cover ***, the projected increase in temperature and then in evapotranspirative demand do not ever result in higher actual evapotranspiration values, due to the concurrent variations in precipitation patterns.

Evolutionary importance of the relationship between cytogeography and climate:New insights on creosote bushes from North and South America
