Different global agendas have discussed the role of soils in mitigating and reducing global problems related to climate change,food security,biodiversity and erosion,among *** this in mind,the aim was to draw up an overview of the main soil agendas in Europe and Brazil,analysing their impact on the establishment of legal frameworks for soil use and *** Brazil,pastures are seen as an important alternative for converting degraded areas into ecosystem *** this end,a literature review was carried out using databases on the Scopus,Web of Science,Science Direct and Scielo platforms,as well as consulting documents from the European Union Missions in Horizon Europe and Brazilian legislation on the *** a pilot river basin,the Potential for Conservation Use(PCU)method was applied,which is used in Brazil to assess the impacts of different uses on the natural capital of soils,serving as a metric to guide public soil conservation *** was concluded that,on the European scene,discussions on soils have taken place in an integrated and organised way,with actions to mobilise different players in *** Brazil,even though there are important legal frameworks,actions are still restricted and disjointed,pointing to the need for progress in soil *** both scenarios,there is a need for scientifically validated metrics at regional scales that can contribute to a harmonised database capable of subsidising the development of efficient public policies to advance soil conservation at a global level.

The novel of COVID-19 disease started in late 2019 making the worldwide governments came across a high number of critical and death cases,beyond constant fear of the collapse in their health *** the beginning of the pandemic,researchers and authorities are mainly concerned with carrying out quantitative studies(modeling and predictions)overcoming the scarcity of tests that lead us to under-reporting *** address these issues,we introduce a Bayesian approach to the SIR model with correction for underreporting in the analysis of COVID-19 cases in *** proposed model was enforced to obtain estimates of important quantities such as the reproductive rate and the average infection period,along with the more likely date when the pandemic peak may *** under-reporting scenarios were considered in the simulation study,showing how impacting is the lack of information in the modeling.

An aqueous extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan alters the labeling of blood constituents with Technetium-99m

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging *** influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was *** blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium *** were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood *** percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was *** analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(P<0.05) the %ATI(from 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of *** conclusion,the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process,probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood *** a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.

Technical Evaluation of Hybrid Clones of Corymbia spp. to Produce Market Pulp

This study presents hybrid clones of Corymbia *** by Aperam BioEnergia as potential substitutes for Eucalyptus wood in the pulp *** biomass of Eucalyptus *** compared with that of Corymbia *** performing modified kraft pulping and basic density *** were made by analyzing their respective mean annual increments of cellulose(MAI_(cel))and specific wood consumption(SWC),estimated using a kappa number of(19±1).The results showed that one of the hybrid clones(Corymbia citriodora×Corymbia torelliana,ID 4)had higher basic wood density,higher screened yield,better MAI_(cel#k19),and lower SWC than the other samples,reaching values of 0.608 t/m^(3),54.1%,24.6 ADt/ha/year(i.e.,air dry ton/hectare/year),and 2.74 m^(3)/ADt,***,clone ID 4 had the highest MAI_(cel)/SWC ratio score(8.98).Given its high forest productivity and low industrial cost compared with other samples,as well as its advantages over Eucalyptus ***,we concluded that clone ID 4 has great potential as an alternative biomass for pulp production.

Drought stress is major abiotic stress that affects soybean ***,it is widely desirable that soybean becomes more tolerant to *** provide insights into regulatory mechanisms of the stress response,we compared the global gene expression profiles from leaves of two soybean genotypes that display different responses to water-deficit(BR 16 and Embrapa 48,drought-sensitive and droughttolerant,respectively).After the RNA-seq analysis,a total of 5335 down-regulated and 3170 up-regulated genes were identified in the *** the other hand,the number of genes differentially expressed was markedly lower in the Embrapa 48,355 up-regulated and 471 down-regulated ***,induction and expression of protein kinases and transcription factors indicated signaling cascades involved in the drought ***,the results suggest that the metabolism of pectin is differently modulated in response to drought stress and may play a role in the soybean defense mechanism against *** occurs via an increase of the cell wall plasticity and crosslink,which contributed to a higher hydraulic conductance(Kf)and relative water content(RWC%).The drought-tolerance mechanism of the Embrapa 48 genotype involves remodeling of the cell wall and increase of the hydraulic conductance to the maintenance of cell turgor and metabolic processes,resulting in the highest leaf RWC,photosynthetic rate(A),transpiration(E)and carboxylation(A/Ci).Thus,we concluded that the cell wall adjustment under drought is important for a more efficient water use which promoted a more active photosynthetic metabolism,maintaining higher plant growth under drought stress.

Exercise training in hypertension:Role of microRNAs

Hypertension is a complex disease that constitutes an important public health problem and demands many studies in order to understand the molecular mechanisms involving his pathophysiology. Therefore, an increasing number of studies have been conducted and new therapies are continually being discovered. In this context, exercise training has emerged as an important non-pharmacological therapy to treat hypertensive patients, minimizing the side effects of pharmacological therapies and frequently contributing to allow pharmacotherapy to be suspended. Several mechanisms have been associated with the pathogenesis of hypertension, such as hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin aldosterone system,impaired endothelial nitric oxide production, increased oxygen-reactive species, vascular thickening and stiffening, cardiac hypertrophy, impaired angiogenesis, and sometimes genetic predisposition. With the advent of microRNAs(miRNAs), new insights have been added to the perspectives for the treatment of this disease, and exercise training has been shown to be able to modulate the miRNAs associated with it. Elucidation of the relationship between exercise training and miRNAs in the pathogenesis of hypertension is fundamental in order to understand how exercise modulates the cardiovascular system at genetic level. This can be promising even for the development of new drugs. This article is a review of how exercise training acts on hypertension by means of specific miRNAs in the heart, vascular system, and skeletal muscle.

The essential oils from Mentha viridis (L). L. and Mentha pulegium L. were studied to assess their inhibitory potential on phospholipase from snake venoms and to determine their cytogenotoxic action on human cells. These essential oils were able to inhibit the breakdown of phospholipids induced by venoms of snakes of the Bothrops genus. Both oils presented hemolytic activity, although the Mentha viridis (L). L. oil induced hemolysis only at the highest concentrations (14.6 and 29 μL·mL-1). The essential oil from M. viridis induced 3.9;8.6 and 16.2 times greater damage to human leukocyte DNA than that observed with the positive control (100 μg·μL-1 doxorubicin) at concentrations of 0.25;0.5 and 1.0 μL·mL-1, respectively. A similar effect was observed for the oil from M. pulegium (2.1, 2.5 and 15.8 times greater damage). The results extend the characterization of these essential oils and demonstrate their potential use in industries.

Evaluation of Prophylaxis with Norfloxacin and Ceftriaxone versus Ciprofloxacin during the Period of Neutropenia after Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation:Retrospective Analysis of Two Sequencial Cohorts

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of febrile neutropenia (FN) during aplasia after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients who received anti-bacterial prophylaxis with norfloxacin/ceftriaxone or ciprofloxacin, between September 2006 and May 2009. Methods: We retrospectively examined all patients undergoing HSCT at S?o Paulo Hospital during the study period. Results: Of the 107 studied patients, 71 (66.3%) were included in the analysis. The exclusion criteria were as follows: occurrence of fever or infection before the transplantation (17), prophylactic use of norfloxacin (6), fever of probable non-infectious aetiology (2), and absence of prophylaxis during the aplasia period (11). Thirty-eight patients received norfloxacin and ceftriaxone as prophylaxis (Group I) and 33 received ciprofloxacin (Group II). The groups were comparable with respect to age, underlying diseases, comorbidities, and status of the underlying disease. Patients in Group II used antibiotics in a significantly higher frequency than those in Group I (66.7% vs 33.8%, p = 0.017), for 30 days before transplantation. The number of previous hospitalisations, length of hospitalisation until transplantation, type of transplant, progenitor cells used, number of CD34 cells infused, type of conditioning, and graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis were similar in both groups. After the transplantation, 28.9% and 39.4% of the patients in Groups I and II, respectively, presented Grade III and IV mucositis (p = 0.448). Neutropenia of <500 neutrophils/mm3 lasted an average of 9.5 and 9.3 days in Groups I and II, whereas neutropenia of <100 neutrophils/mm3 lasted between 6.6 and 5.7 days. FN occurred in 78.9% of patients in Group I and 81.8% in Group II, with no significant difference in the classification of these episodes. Quantitative Evaluation of Inflammatory Response in Rats Submitted to the Abdominal Wall Surgery Using Peritoneum of Paca Preserved in 300% Supersaturated Solution of Sucrose or 98% Glycerin

This study aimed to quantitative evaluate the implantation of paca’s peritoneum, a new biomaterial option, preserved in 300% supersaturated sugar solution or 98% glycerin on the abdominal wall of Wistar rats. 60 males, weighing between 150 and 200 g, are organized into the following experimental groups: control group (GI);group peritoneum preserved in 300% supersaturated sugar solution (GII);and group peritoneum preserved in 98% glycerin (GIII). Each group had 20 animals. Five rats from each group underwent euthanasia at four different moments: 7th, 15th, 30th, and 60th post-operatory day for histological and stereological evaluations of the graft/native tissue interface. On histological examination, one found out an extensive presence of inflammatory infiltrate at the early periods (7th and 15th day) and an extensive presence of connective tissue at the late moments (30th and 60th day). Through stereological analysis, one found out that the number of mononuclear cells decreased throughout the evaluation moments. One concluded that the paca’s peritoneum as a biological membrane preserved in 98% glycerin, when implanted on the abdominal wall of rats, microscopically allowed one to obtain, through stereological analyses, a lower inflammatory response than the paca’s peritoneum preserved in 300% supersaturated sugar solution.
