The rapid increase in energy demand,the extensive use of fossil fuels and the urgent need to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions have raised concerns in the transportation *** renewable and sustainable sources have become the ultimate solution to overcome the expected depletion of fossil *** conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to liquid(BtL)transportation fuels seems to be a promising path and presents advantages over first generation biofuels and fossil ***,development of BtL systems is critical to increase the potential of this resource in a sustainable and economic *** of lignocellulosic BtL transportation fuels,such as,gasoline,diesel and jet fuel can be accomplished through various thermochemical processes and processing *** major steps for the production of BtL fuels involve feedstock selection,physical pretreatment,production of bio-oil,upgrading of bio-oil to transportation fuels and recovery of value-added *** present work is aiming to give a comprehensive review of the current process technologies following these major steps and the current scenarios of biomass to liquid facilities for the production of biofuels.

Presenilins and autophagy: Presenilin 1 (PS1) and presenilin 2 (PS2) are homologous, multi-pass transmembrane proteins endowed with pleiotropic functions, ranging from the regulation of membrane trafficking to cell differentiation. Their catalytic activity within the γ-secretase complex, an aspartyl-protease responsible for the intramembrane cleavage of several different type I transmembrane proteins, has been intensively studied in the context of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Indeed, tens of autosomal dominant mutations in the PSEN1 and PSEN2 genes (encoding PS1 and PS2, respectively) have been associated with the rare familial forms of AD (FAD).

When foraging on carrion resources, the wasp Vespula germanica usually makes repeated visits to the feeding site until depleting the resource. In the present study we analyzed how environmental cues affect wasps＇ behavior when re-locating a protein food source. We studied this behavior in two different natural habitats： closed and open habitats. As closed habitats have more references to orient wasps to the feeding site than open habitats, we hypothesized that they would return to the foraging site more frequently in closed habitats than in open ones. We tested this hypothesis by studying wasp behavior in three different natural habitat conditions：（i） closed habitats, （ii） open habitats, and （iii） open habitats artificially modified by adding five sticks with flagging. Experiments consisted of training individual wasps to feed from a certain array, and at the testing phase we removed food and displaced the array by 60 cm. Therefore, we recorded wasps＇ choices when returning to the training area, by counting both the wasps＇ first approaches and the number of visits to the original feeding site and the displaced array. Wasps＇ behavior while re-locating a protein food source was different if foraging at open or closed habitats. Wasps more frequently re- visited a previous feeding location when foraging in closed habitats than when foraging in open ones. Furthermore, wasps more frequently visited the displaced array than the original feeding site in all three treatments. Nevertheless, when wasps were trained in closed habitats, they returned to the original feeding site more frequently than if trained in open ones. Interestingly, when five sticks with flagging were added in open habitats, wasps responded similarly as in closed habitats without these references. The results show that foraging behavior in V. germanica seems to be different in closed and open habitats, probably associated with the existence of references that guide foragers when re-locating undepleted res

INTERNODES is a general purpose method to deal with non-conforming discretizations of partial differential equations on 2D and 3D regions partitioned into two or several disjoint subdomains. It exploits two intergrid interpolation operators, one for transfering the Dirichlet trace across the interfaces, and the other for the Neumann trace. In this paper, in every subdomain the original problem is discretized by either the finite element method (FEM) or the spectral element method (SEM or hp-FEM), using a priori non-matching grids and piecewise polynomials of different degrees. Other discretization methods, however, can be used. INTERNODES can also be applied to heterogeneous or multiphysics problems, that is, problems that feature different differential operators inside adjacent subdomains. For instance, in this paper we apply the INTERNODES method to a Stokes- Darcy coupled problem that models the filtration of fluids in porous media. Our results highlight the flexibility of the method as well as its optimal rate of convergence with respect to the grid size and the polynomial degree.

This paper describes the bioinspiration process to derive design concepts for new deep foundation systems that have greater axial capacity per unit volume of pile material compared to conventional deep *** study led to bioinspired ideas that provide greater load capacity by increasing the pile shaft *** bioinspiration approach used problem-solving strategies to define the problem and transfer strategies from biology to geotechnical *** bioinspiration considered the load transfer mechanism of hydroskeletons and the anchorage of the earthworm,razor clam,kelp,and lateral roots of *** biostrategies that were transferred to the engineering domain included a flexible but incompressible core,passive behaviour against external loading,a longitudinally split shell that allows expansion for anchorage,and lateral root-type or setae-type anchoring *** concepts of three bioinspired deep foundation systems were proposed and *** advantage of this approach was illustrated with two examples of the new laterally expansive pile in drained sand under axial *** finite element analysis of these examples showed that the new laterally expansive pile can provide considerably greater load capacity compared to a conventional cylindrical pile due to the increased lateral confining pressure developed along the expanded pile core.

The latest achievements in the field of pancreas transplantation and stem cell therapy require an effort by the scientific community to clarify the ethical implications of pioneering treatments,often characterized by high complexity from a surgical point of view,due to transplantation of multiple organs at the same time or at different times,and from an immunological point of view for stem cell *** fundamental value in the field of organ transplants is,of course,a solidarity principle,namely that of protecting the health and life of people for whom transplantation is a condition of functional recovery,or even of *** nature of this value is that of a concept to which the legal discipline of transplants entrusts its own ethical dignity and for which it has ensured a constitutional recognition in different *** general principle of respect for human life,both of the donor and of the recipient,evokes the need not to put oneself and one’s neighbor in dangerous *** present ethical reflection aims to find a balance between the latest therapeutic advances and several concepts including the idea of the person,the respect due to the dead,the voluntary nature of the donation and the consent to the same,the gratuitousness of the donation,the scientific progress and the development of surgical techniques,and the policies of health promotion.
