Comparative carbon emission assessments of recycled and natural aggregate concrete: Environmental influence of cement content

This work examines the environmental and geochemical impact of recycled aggregate concrete production with properties representative for structural *** environmental influence of cement content,aggregate production,transportation,and waste landfilling is analysed by undertaking a life cycle assessment and considering a life cycle inventory largely specific for the *** obtain a detailed insight into the optimum life cycle parameters,a sensitivity study is carried out in which supplementary cementitious materials,different values of natural-to-recycled aggregate content ratio and case-specific transportation distances were *** results show that carbon emissions were between 323 and 332 kgCo_(2)e per cubic metre of cement only natural aggregate *** values can be reduced by up to 17%by replacing 25%of the cement with fly *** contrast,carbon emissions can increase when natural coarse aggregates are replaced by recycled aggregates in proportions of 50%and 100%,and transportation is not included in ***,the concrete with 50%recycled aggregate presented lower increase,only 0.3%and 3.4%for normal and high strength concrete,*** some cases,the relative contribution of transportation to the total carbon emissions increased when cement was replaced by fly ash in proportions of 25%,and case-specific transportation distances were *** absolute values,the concrete mixes with 100%recycled aggregates and 25%fly ash had lower carbon emissions than concrete with cement and natural aggregates *** environmental benefits can be obtained when the transportation distances of fly ash are relatively short(15–25 km)and the cement replacement by fly ash is equal or higher than 25%,considering that the mechanical properties are adequate for practical *** observations from this paper show that recycled aggregate concrete with strength characteristics representative for structural members can have lowe

BACKGroUND The uncertainties about coronavirus disease 2019(CoVID-19),the change in routine,lifestyles and the reduction of physical contact can cause stress,anxiety,emotional overload,poor sleep and even physical health *** To evaluate the scientific publications available on the relationship between CoVID-19 and anxiety experienced in the general population,during the period of social isolation,adopted by governmental organizations and public health policymakers as a measure to contain the spread of *** A literature search was performed systematically exploring the PubMed and Medline databases using the following terms classified as MeSH descriptors:(“anxiety”AND“pandemic”AND“CoVID-19”).For the search,in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde–BVS,***,Web of Science and National Library plat forms, the following keywords were used: ("anxiety" AND "coronavirus" AND"social isolation"). Thirty-seven peer-reviewed articles were found. PRISMA andthe Downs & Black checklist were used for qualitative *** applying the inclusion criteria, seven (n = 7) original scientific articles wereselected. The collated evidence demonstrated increased levels of symptoms ofanxiety and depression during the period of social isolation. The populationbetween 21 to 40 years was most affected. The risk of severe depression was twiceas high at the epicenter of the pandemic. Urban barriers are often a consequence of the unplanned expansion of transport infrastructures,housing growth nearby existing transport infrastructures,and the vehicular traffic *** process,also known as“community severance”,is a problem that affects the travel patterns of the population and causes negative impacts to adjacent communities,but it is not easy to *** an alternative to the costly technologies and restricted-access data sometimes used to analyze urban barriers,we propose an analytical approach that assesses community severance levels by classifying the quality of Pedestrian Crossings on Urban Streets(the PeCUS index).Additionally,the approach is used to identify possible inequities nearby the different classification groups regarding demographic *** used the chi-square(χ^(2))test of independence and the standardized Pearson residuals to indicate deficits and excesses of residents regarding the demographic characteristics studied surrounding the urban *** found the following evidences of associations:residents with low-income or those aged up to 19 tend to live close to the worst crossings,whereas residents with permanent mobility constraints or the elderly tend to live near the crossings with the best ***,the study shows that the assessment of community severance by the analysis of the PeCUS index is ***,it reveals that the distribution of residents surrounding the distinct classes of quality of crossings is equitable for vulnerable social groups,except for low-income or young residents.

Plants hold biochemical and physiological mechanisms to withstand drought ***,depending on water deficit interval,plant rehydration relies on how it can retain growth or a positive water balance—or rarely *** this study,two species of Hymenaea,one from the Amazon and the other from the Brazilian Cerrado,were investigated for their physiological mechanism associated with growth rehydration upon short-term exposure to drought *** findings demonstrate that Hymenaea courbaril tends to invest in nitrogen to the detriment of carbon compounds,-as it is limited by lower net photosynthesis-and adjust root growth to attenuate drought stress *** contrast,Hymenaea stigonocarpa takes advantage of higher water potential and a basal rate of lower net photosynthesis to support aboveground growth under such ***,it is postulated that there are distinct ways of controlling water status and growth between *** and ***,which are determined either by the ability of the species to keep net photosynthesis at low levels of water content or by favoring the accumulation of nitrogen *** mechanisms were effective with regards to water use efficiency and thus it is reasonable to suggest that strategies are not exclusive and may work under adverse conditions,as observed in Amazon and Brazilian Cerrado ***.
