Incremental Static Analysis of 2D Flow by Inter-Colliding p.int-p.rticles and Use of Incomp.essible Rhombic Element

A simp.e method is p.op.sed, for incremental static analysis of a set of inter-colliding p.rticles, simulating 2D flow. Within each step.of p.op.sed algorithm, the p.rticles p.rform small disp.acements, p.op.rtional to the out-of-balance forces, acting on them. Numerical exp.riments show that if the liquid is confined within boundaries of a set of inter-communicating vessels, then the p.op.sed method converges to a final equilibrium state. This incremental static analysis ap.roximates dynamic behavior with strong damp.ng and can p.ovide information, as a first ap.roximation to 2D movement of a liquid. In the initial arrangement of p.rticles, a rhombic element is p.op.sed, which assures satisfactory incomp.essibility of the fluid. Based on the p.op.sed algorithm, a simp.e and short comp.ter p.ogram (a “p.cket” p.ogram) has been develop.d, with only about 120 Fortran instructions. This p.ogram is first ap.lied to an amount of liquid, contained in a single vessel. A coarse and refined discretization is tried. In final equilibrium state of liquid, the distribution on hydro-static p.essure on vessel boundaries, obtained by p.op.sed comp.tational model, is found in satisfactory ap.roximation with corresp.nding theoretical data. Then, an op.ning is formed, at the bottom of a vertical boundary of initial vessel, and the liquid is allowed to flow gradually to an adjacent vessel. Almost whole amount of liquid is transferred, from first to second vessel, excep. of few drop.-p.rticles, which remain, in equilibrium, at the bottom of initial vessel. In the final equilibrium state of liquid, in the second vessel, the free surface level of the liquid confirms that the p.op.sed rhombing element assures a satisfactory incomp.essibility of the fluid.

Using the USLE: Chances, challenges and limitations of soil erosion modelling

To give soils and soil degradation,which are among the most crucial threats to ecosystem stability,social and p.litical visibility,small and large scale modelling and map.ing of soil erosion is *** most widely used ap.roaches during an 80year history of erosion modelling are Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)-typ. based algorithms which have been ap.lied in 109 *** soil erosion by water (excluding gully erosion and land sliding),we start this review with a statistical evaluation of nearly 2,000 p.blications).We discuss model develop.ents which use USLE-typ. equations as basis or side modules,but we also address recent develop.ent of the single USLE p.rameters (R,K,LS,C,p..Imp.rtance,aim and limitations of model validation as well as a comp.rison of USLE-typ. models with other erosion assessment tools are *** comp.risons demonstrate that the ap.lication of p.ocess-based p.ysical models (e.g.,WEp. or p.SERA) does not necessarily result in lower uncertainties comp.red to more simp.e structured emp.rical models such as USLE-typ. *** identified four key areas for future research:(i) overcoming the p.incip.lly different nature of modelled (gross) versus measured (net) erosion rates,in coup.ing on-site erosion risk to runoff p.tterns,and dep.sitional regime,(ii) using the recent increase in sp.tial resolution of remote sensing data to develop.p.ocess based models for large scale ap.lications,(iii) strengthen and extend measurement and monitoring p.ograms to build up.validation data sets,and (iv) rigorous uncertainty assessment and the ap.lication of objective evaluation criteria to soil erosion modelling.

Egg p.rasitoids are known to use a wide range of chemicals, emitted by p.ants, host eggs or adults, for host selection. The effect of the sex p.eromone comp.nents of the lep.dop.eran olive p.sts p.ays oleae （Lep.dop.era： Yp.nomeutidae） and p.lp.ta unionalis （Lep.dop.era： p.ralidae） was studied under laboratory conditions, on the foraging behaviour of the egg p.rasitoid Trichogramma oleae （Hymenop.era： Trichogrammatidae）. The re- sp.nse of T. oleae wasp. to （Z）-7-tetradecenal and （E）-1 l-hexadecenal, major sex p.ero- mone comp.nents ofp. oleae and p. unionalis resp.ctively, dep.nded on the dose of the p.eromone used in a Y-tube olfactometer bioassay. （E）-11-hexadecenal elicited maximum attraction （70%） at a dose of 1 p., while a dose of 100 p. （Z）-7-tetradecenal attracted 80% of the tested wasp.. （E）-11-hexadecenyl acetate, the second sex p.eromone comp.nent of p. unionalis, and the binary blend of（E）-i 1-hexadecenyl acetate：（E）-11-hexadecenal （7：3） were not attractive at these doses. The results of this research are discussed in view that they may be considered as alternatives in the biological control of these p.sts.

Achievements of Truss Models for Reinforced Concrete Structures

Achievements are p.esented for truss models of RC structures develop.d in p.evious years: 1. Two constitutive models, biaxial and triaxial, are based on regular trusses, with bars obeying nonlinear uniaxial σ-ε laws of material under simulation;both models have been comp.red with test results and show a dep.ndence of p.isson ratio on curvature of σ-ε law. 2. A truss finite element has been used in the nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of p.ane RC frames;it has been comp.red with test results and describes, in a simp.e way, the formation of p.astic hinges. 3. Thanks to the very simp.e geometry of a truss, the equilibrium equations can be easily written and the stiffness matrix can be easily up.ated, both with resp.ct to the deformed truss, within each step.of a static incremental loading or within each time step.of a dynamic analysis, so that to take into account geometric nonlinearities. So the confinement of a RC column is interp.eted as a structural stability effect of concrete. And a significant role of the transverse reinforcement is revealed, that of p.eventing, by its close sp.cing and sufficient amount, the buckling of inner longitudinal concrete struts, which would lead to a global instability of the RC column. 4. The p.op.sed truss model is statically indeterminate, so it exhibits some features, which are not met by the “strut-and-tie” model.

A Case Rep.rt of Orf Disease in a Greek Island: Diagnostic Tests or Interventions Are Not Necessary

The Orf disease, also known as contagious ecthyma, is a zoonotic infection caused by a dermatotrop.c p.rap.xvirus that commonly infects small ruminants such as sheep.and goats. It is transmitted to humans through contact with an infected animal or fomites. Human infection typ.cally is associated with occup.tional animal contact. We recently treated a healthy 41-year-old woman who p.esented a hangnail lesion on the middle finger of her right hand. The lesion was hard cauliflower-like mass, granulomatous and p.inful. Surgical debridement and biop.y were p.rformed for further investigation. The Orf disease is usually self-limiting and resolves in 6 - 10 weeks, but comp.ications may occur. The diagnosis may be confirmed by electron microscop., conventional histop.thology or by isolation of the virus by p.R. Early clinical recognition and knowledge of this benign viral condition are vital to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention.

Modified deep.sclerectomy combined with Ex-p.ESS filtration device versus trabeculectomy for p.imary op.n angle glaucoma

AIM：To comp.re the efficacy of modified deep.sclerectomy combined with Ex-p.ESS shunt versus trabeculectomy in p.imary op.n angle glaucoma. METHODS：This is a p.osp.ctive cohort comp.rative single-center study. Forty-nine eyes of 49 p.tients were enrolled in the study. p.tients were randomly divided into two group.. Group.A（22 p.tients） underwent classic trabeculectomy and group.B（27 p.tients） underwent modified deep.sclerectomy combined with insertion of Ex-p.ESS model p.0 drainage device. RESULTS：Mean age was 69±7y in group.A and 64±8y in group.B（p.0.03）. The mean reduction was 11.1±5.7 mm Hg in group.A comp.red to 15.8±5.7 mm Hg in group.B at 6mo（p.0.006）, and 9.8±4.9 mm Hg and 15.4±4.7 mm Hg resp.ctively at 1y（p.0.0001）. Regarding the p.stop.rative glaucoma medication, significant difference was observed between the two group.（in favour of group.B） only at 6mo（p.0.017）. At the end of the follow-up.p.riod comp.ete success rate in group.A was 68.2% comp.red to 92.6% in group.B（χ^2 test, p.0.07） and qualified success rate was 100% in both ***：Modified deep.sclerectomy combined with Ex-p.ESS shunt may p.ovide comp.rable IOp.reduction with fewer comp.ications in management of p.imary op.n angle glaucoma.

AIM: To analyze the features of the filtering blebs following imp.antation of the Ex-p.ESS glaucoma device(model p.50) with the aid of the Visante anterior segment op.ical coherence tomograp.y(AS-OCT)METHODS: Five p.tients with op.n angle glaucomas were included in the study. They all underwent imp.antation of the Ex-p.ESS device under a scleral flap. The surgical p.ocedure was augmented with the use of mitomycin C subconjunctivally. The filtering blebs were analyzed with the Visante AS-OCT with the scans taken along the axis of the imp.antation of the glaucoma ***: All filtering blebs were graded as diffuse functioning. The morp.ological characteristics of the blebs were similar to those of the *** the use of the Ex-p.ESS imp.ant tend to form a characteristic ep.scleral lake at the site of the p.ate of the imp.ant. CONCLUSION: The use of the Ex-p.ESS imp.ant p.oduces filtering blebs similar to those of the trabeculectomy with the formation of a characteristic ep.scleral lake at the site of the p.ate of the imp.ant.

Risk of colorectal neop.asm in p.tients with acromegaly: A meta-analysis

AIM: To examine the risk of colorectal neop.asm in acromegalic p.tients by meta-analyzing all relevant controlled studies. METHODS: Extensive English language medical literature searches for human studies, up.to December 2007, were p.rformed using suitable keywords. p.oled estimates [odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI)] were obtained using either the fixed or random-effects model as ap.rop.iate. Heterogeneity between studies was evaluated with the Cochran Q test whereas the likelihood of p.blication bias was assessed by constructing funnel p.ots. Their symmetry was estimated by the adjusted rank correlation test. RESULTS: For hyp.rp.astic p.lyp. the p.oled ORs with 95% CI were 3.557 (2.587-4.891) by fixed effects model and 3.703 (2.565-5.347) by random effects model. The Z test values for overall effect were 7.81 and 6.984, resp.ctively (p.p.oled ORs with 95% CI were 2.486 (1.908-3.238) (fixed effects model) and 2.537 (1.914-3.364) (random effects model). The Z test values were 6.747 and 6.472, resp.ctively (p.p.oled OR with 95% CI was identical for both fixed and random effects model (OR, 4.351; 95% CI, 1.533-12.354; Z = 2.762, p.= 0.006]. There was no significant heterogeneity and no p.blication bias in all the above meta-analyses. CONCLUSION: Acromegaly is associated with an increased risk of colorectal neop.asm.

Detection of Helicobacter p.lori:A faster urease test can save resources

AIM: To investigate whether differences in the rap.dity of a p.sitive result for Helicobacter p.lori can save res ources, by comp.ring two commercially available urease kits. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-five adults (130 outp.tients, 55 inp.tients) undergoing gastroscop. were entered p.osp.ctively. p.tients were divided into two group.: Group.1 (if they were not on p.Is, antibiotics, H2A, bismuth or sucralfate for up.to 14 d p.ior to the endoscop.) and Group.2 (if they were on, or had been on, any of the above medication in the p.evious 14 d). At endoscop. two sets of biop.ies, taken in random order, were p.aced in the wells of the Camp.lobacter-like organism (CLO) test (Kimberly-Clark, Utah, USA) and the Quick test (Biohit p.c, Helsinki, Finland). Five additional gastric biop.ies were taken for histology/Giemsa and immunohistochemical study. The two urease test slides were read at 2 min, 30 min, 2 h and 24 h. Sensitivity and sp.cif icity at 24 h were determined. RESULTS: At 24 h, for all p.tients, there was no difference in sensitivity (100% vs 97.5%), sp.cificity (99.3%), p.sitive (97.5%) and negative p.edictive values (100% vs 99.3%) between the CLO and Quick tests, resp.ctively. There was a p.sitive result at 30 min in 17/41 (41.5%) CLO tests, and in 28/40 (70%) Quick tests, p.= 0.05. Quick test enabled the p.escrip.ion of eradication therap. before discharge in all 28/40 p.tients. Only 12 (30%) follow-up.ap.ointments were needed. If the CLO test had been used alone, only 17 (41.5%) p.escrip.ions would have been p.ssible p.ior to discharge and 24 (58%) follow-up.ap.ointments would be needed (p.= 0.001). Of 2000 gastroscop.es p.rformed annually at our unit, a saving of 123 follow-up.ap.ointments (total: 8856 Euros or 11 808 USD) would be achieved if we switched to the Quick test. CONCLUSION: Direct comp.rison of locally available urease test kits is worthwhile, since the ap.rop.iate choice results in a significant saving of resources. Local costs and follow-up
