Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous benzene,toluene and xylene under UV and visible irradiation over Mn-doped TiO_(2)nanoparticles

The photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous benzene,toluene and xylene(BTX)over un-doped,0.1 and 1 wt%Mn-TiO_(2)nanoparticles under ultraviolet and visible irradiation was studied in atmosphere of synthetic air or inert *** photocatalytic decomposition efficiency and the oxidation products were determined using a Static Photochemical Reactor coupled with FTIR *** underwent efficient decomposition over Mn-TiO_(2)photocatalysts under UV irradiation,more with oxygen presence and less without *** important toluene and xylene went substantial decomposition over 0.1 mol%Mn-TiO_(2)under visible irradiation with oxygen *** main final oxidation products in the UV photocatalysis of BTX were CO_(2),CO and H2O,with CO_(2) and CO yields 4 and 2 *** conversion percentage of benzene,toluene,and xylene to CO_(2) were 63.6%,56.4%,51.8%,and to CO 29%,26.5%,23.2%,*** the visible photocatalysis of toluene and xylene the yields of CO were *** of carbon containing deposits on TiO_(2)surfaces was observed after extensive UV photocatalysis of toluene and xylene,and such by-products surface coverage may reduce the photocatalytic activity of TiO_(2)*** aspects of the photocatalytic mechanism were examined.

Currently,many soil erosion studies at local,regional,national or continental scale use models based on the USLE-family *** of these models pay little attention to seasonal changes,despite evidence in the literature which suggests that erosion risk may change rapidly according to intra-annual rainfall figures and vegetation *** paper emphasises the aspect of seasonality in soil erosion mapping by using month-step rainfall erosivity data and biophysical time series data derived from *** latter,together with other existing pan-European geo-databases sets the basis for a functional pan-European service for soil erosion monitoring at a scale of 1:500,*** potential service has led to the establishment of a new modelling approach(called the G2 model)based on the inheritance of USLE-family *** G2 model proposes innovative techniques for the estimation of vegetation and protection *** model has been applied in a 14,500 km 2 study area in SE Europe covering a major part of the basin of the cross-border river,*** results were verified with erosion and sedimentation figures from previous *** study confirmed that monthly erosion mapping would identify the critical months and would allow erosion figures to be linked to specific land uses.

The work presented in this paper serves as numerical verification of the analytical model developed in the companion paper for nonlinear dynamic analysis of multi-base seismically isolated structures. To this end, two numerical examples have been analyzed using the computational algorithm incorporated into program 3D-BASIS-ME-MB, developed on the basis of the newly-formulated analytical model. The first example concerns a seven-story model structure that was tested on the earthquake simulator at the University at Buflhlo and was also used as a verification example for program SAP2000. The second example concerns a two-tower, multi-story structure with a split-level seismic-isolation system. For purposes of verification, key results produced by 3D-BASIS-ME-MB are compared to experimental results, or results obtained from other structural/finite element programs. In both examples, the analyzed structure is excited under conditions of bearing uplift, thus yielding a case of much interest in verifying the capabilities of the developed analysis tool.

The complexity of modem seismically isolated structures requires the analysis of the structural, system and the isolation system in its entirety and the ability to capture potential discontinuous phenomena such as isolator uplift and their effects on the superstructures and the isolation hardware. In this paper, an analytical model is developed and a computational algorithm is formulated to analyze complex seismically isolated superstructures even when undergoing highly-nonlinear phenomena such as uplift. The computational model has the capability of modeling various types of isolation devices with strong nonlinearities, analyzing multiple superstructures （up to five separate superstructures） on multiple bases （up to five bases）, and capturing the effects of lateral loads on bearing axial forces, including bearing uplift. The model developed herein has been utilized to form the software platform 3D-BASIS-ME-MB, which provides the practicing engineering community with a versatile tool for analysis and design of complex structures with modem isolation systems.

A comprehensive project evaluation and decision-making method considering multiple objectives,stakeholders,and attributes of proposed traffic treatments is inherently *** individual techniques in evaluating operations,safety,economic,and stakeholder objectives are available,a practical method that integrates all these risk factors and their uncertainties into a multiattribute decision-making tool is absent.A three-level project decision-making process was developed to model and assess multiple-attribute risk in a proposed traffic treatment from the perspective of multiple *** direct benefits from reducing delay and safety risk(basic objectives of traffic treatments) are computed in Level 1 with established *** and performance analysis in Level 2 examine site-specific constraints and conduct detailed performance analysis using advanced analysis *** Level 3,this paper introduces an innovative and integrated multiple attributes evaluation process under fuzziness and uncertainty(MAFU) process for evaluation and *** MAFU is a comprehensive and systematic assessment and decision-making procedure that can assess the magnitudes of project performance and to integrate conflicting interests and tradeoffs among stakeholders.A case study illustrates theapplication of MAFU for the selection of a traffic alternative involving several evaluation attributes and *** show that the MAFU produced the smallest variance for each *** traditional cost–benefit evaluation methods,the uncertainty associated with performance of a traffic project in terms of operation,safety,environmental impacts,etc.,is unrestricted and ***,a reliable multi-attribute evaluation of complex traffic projects should not be made with conventional cost–benefit analysis alone but with a process like MAFU.

THE EFFECT OF OCCUPANCY ON ELECTRICITY USE IN THREE CANADIAN SCHOOLS

Through building performance simulations, previous studies showed the effect of occupants on buildings’ energy consumption. To further demonstrate this effect using empirical evidence, this study analyzed the effect of occupancy on real-time electricity consumption in three case-study schools in Manitoba. Within each school, one classroom as well as the gymnasium were sub-metered to collect real-time electricity consumption data at half-hourly intervals. The study focused on electricity consumption for lighting and plug loads, which make up 30% of energy consumption in Canadian commercial and institutional buildings. A comprehensive method was developed to investigate energy-related occupant behaviour in the sub-metered spaces using four different tools simultaneously: 1) gymnasium bookings after school hours over a four-month period, 2) half-hourly observations of lighting and equipment use in the sub-metered spaces in each school over a two-week period, 3) a daily survey administered to teachers in the sub-metered classrooms over a two-week period, and 4) occupancy and light sensors to evaluate actual recorded occupancy and light use durations over a four-month period. Results showed that recorded occupancy durations over a 4-month period only explained less than 10% of the variations in classrooms’ lighting electricity consumption, meaning that lights may have been used frequently while classrooms were unoccupied. Results also showed the differences in gymnasiums’ electricity consumption were still statistically significant between the three schools, even after school hours and when the gymnasiums were not used or booked for other activities. This study is the first to provide in-depth evaluation of the effect of occupancy on electricity consumption in Canadian schools.

Four-Beam Model for Vibration Analysis of a Cantilever Beam with an Embedded Horizontal Crack

As one of the main failure modes, embedded cracks occur in beam structures due to periodic loads. Hence it is useful to investigate the dynamic characteristics of a beam structure with an embedded crack for early crack detection and diagnosis. A new four-beam model with local flexibilities at crack tips is developed to investigate the transverse vibration of a cantilever beam with an embedded horizontal crack; two separate beam segments are used to model the crack region to allow opening of crack surfaces. Each beam segment is considered as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. The governing equations and the matching and boundary conditions of the four-beam model are derived using Hamilton＇s principle. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the four-beam model are calculated using the transfer matrix method. The effects of the crack length, depth, and location on the first three natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cracked cantilever beam are investigated. A continuous wavelet transform method is used to analyze the mode shapes of the cracked cantilever beam. It is shown that sudden changes in spatial variations of the wavelet coefficients of the mode shapes can be used to identify the length and location of an embedded horizontal crack. The first three natural frequencies and mode shapes of a cantilever beam with an embedded crack from the finite element method and an experimental investigation are used to validate the proposed model. Local deformations in the vicinity of the crack tips can be described by the proposed four-beam model, which cannot be captured by previous methods.

Yield performance estimation of corn hybrids using machine learning algorithms

Estimation of yield performance for crop products is a topic of interest in *** breeding programs,we cannot test all possible hybrids created by crossing two parents(inbred and tester)since it would be too time consuming and *** this paper,we exploit different machine learning algorithms including decision tree,gradient boosting machine,random forest,adaptive boosting,XGBoost and neural network to predict the yield of corn hybrids using data provided in the 2020 Syngenta Crop *** participants were asked to predict the yield of missing hybrids which were not tested *** results show that the prediction obtained by XGBoost is more accurate than other models with a root mean square error equal to ***,we use XGBoost model to estimate the yield performance for untested combinations of inbreds and *** this approach,we identify hybrids with high predicted yield that can be bred to increase corn production.
