Screening and antibacterial efficacy of selected Indian medicinal plants

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of five Indian medicinal plants such as Acalypha indica L.(A. indica), Aerva lanata(L.) Juss. ex Schult.(A. lanata), Clerodendrum inerme(L.) Gaertn., Pergularia daemia(Forsk.) Chiov. and Solanum surattense Burm. f. against opportunistic bacterial pathogens isolated from HIV infected patients for the potential phytoconstituents in plant ***: The opportunistic bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli(E. coli),Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi and Serratia marcescens from Gramnegative group and Staphylococcus aureus from Gram-positive group were isolated from HIV infected patients. The antibacterial efficacy of ethanolic extracts of selected medicinal plants was carried out by disc diffusion method. The potential phytoconstituents of medicinal plant extracts were identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry(GC–MS) ***: Among the five medicinal plants tested, A. indica and A. lanata showed the significant antibacterial activity. A. indica showed potential activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. A. lanata significantly exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A total of 19 phytoconstituents were identified in the ethanolic extract of A. indica and A. lanata by GC–MS analysis ***: The results of the present investigation revealed that A. indica and A. lanata, possessed significant antibacterial activity when compared with the other plant extracts tested. The presence of 3-O-methyl-D-glucose by GC–MS analysis in both A. indica and A. lanata extracts has not been reported elsewhere in the literature and the findings in this study could be the first one to report.

Preliminary study on the antimicrobial activity of Enicostemma littorale using different solvents

Objective:To study the antimicrobial activity of Enicostemma littorale(***) using different ***:Chloroform,methanol and acetone extracts of different parts of ***(leaf,stem and root) were evaluated for antimicrobial activity using disc diffusion method against some gram-negative species such as Escherichia coli,Klebsiella pnemoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Salmonella typhi and gram-positive species Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus,Bacillus subtilis and two fugal species viz.,Aspergillus fumigates and Aspergillus ***:The chloroform extracts showed the highest antibacterial *** leaf, stem and root extracts,the stem extracts showed maximum antibacterial *** of the used extracts had no significant antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigates and Aspergillus *** chloroform stem extract showed highest activity(about 20 mm inhibition zone) against Bacillus subtilis(at 500 tng/mL) followed by the methanolic stem extract which showed highest activity against the same *** lowest antibacterial activity was observed by the acetone leaf extract(about 8 mm inhibition zone) against Escherichia ***:The findings of the study indicate littorale could also be a new source for antibiotics discovery.

Changes in growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Ocimum sanctum under growth regulator treatments

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of growth regulators on growth characteristics such as root length,shoot length,total leaf area,number of inflorescence per plant,number of flower per inflorescence,whole plant fresh weight and whole plant dry *** characteristics were also analyzed based on the same *** this,various photosynthetic pigment contents such as chlorophyll,carotenoid,anthocyanin and xanthophyll content were *** conventional growth regulator abscisic acid(ABA)and non-conventional growth regulator triazole compound paclobutrazol(PBZ)were *** length increased due to growth regulator treatment,but shoot length *** area was decreased due to growth regulator *** number of inflorescence increased in ABA treated plants,but it was decreased in PBZ treated *** ABA treated plants,the number of flowers per inflorescence was *** PBZ treated plants the number of inflorescence was *** whole plant fresh weight(FW)and dry weight(DW)were increased in ABA and PBZ treated *** was an increase in chlorophyll content in growth regulator treated plants compared to control,and it was more in PBZ treated *** carotenoid content was also increased in ABA and PBZ treated plants.

The ability of triadimefon(TDM),a triazolic fungicide,to alter the biochemical constituents and thereby minimizing the days required for sprouting in white yam(Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) tubers during storage under(30±2) °C in the dark,was *** at 20 mg/L was given to tubers by dipping the tubers in treatment solution containing 20 mg/L TDM on 10,25 and 40 d after storage(DAS).Starch,sugars,protein,amino acid contents as well as protease and α-amylase activities were estimated on 15,30 and 45 DAS from two physiological regions viz.,apical and basal regions of the *** normal conditions(control) sprouting occurred on 70 to 80 *** starch content decreased,while protein,amino acid,sugar contents and protease and α-amylase activities were increased due to TDM treatment and led to early sprouting.

目的研究抗氧化剂和吲哚生物碱在2种长春花(粉红色和白色)植株不同部位的分布。方法通过检测无酶活性的抗氧化分子含量和抗氧化酶活性测定抗氧化能力。无酶活性的抗氧化分子包括抗坏血酸、α-生育酚和还原型谷胱甘肽。抗氧化酶包括超氧化物歧化酶、抗坏血酸过氧化物酶、过氧化氢酶、过氧化物酶和多酚氧化酶。所用样品为从田间收集到的植株的根、茎、叶、花和豆荚。结果与其他部位比较,根和茎中抗氧化剂的含量较高,花和豆荚中含量最低。粉红色长春花中抗氧化剂和生物碱含量较高。叶中抗氧化酶的活性较高,但吲哚生物碱的含量在粉红色长春花的根中较高。结论对于抗氧化剂和生物碱含量而言,粉红色长春花更适合培养。

Changes in the sucrose metabolism of Cur-cuma longa *** were studied under treatment with different triazole compounds viz.,triadimefon(TDM)and propiconazole(PCZ).Plants were treated with TDM at 15mg/L and PCZ at 10mg/L separately by soil drenching on 80,110,and 140 days after planting(DAP).The plants were harvested randomly on 90,120,and 150DAP to determine the effect of both the triazoles on sucrose metabolizing enzymes and phenol *** sucrose metabolism was studied by analyzing sucrose metaboliz-ing enzymes like sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphate *** the analyses were assayed in leaves and tubers of both control and treated *** was found that both of the triazole compounds had profound effects on these parameters.
