Comparison of blood rheological models in patient specific cardiovascular system simulations

Newtonian, Quemada and Casson blood viscosity models are implemented in order to simulate the rheological behavior of blood under pulsating flow conditions in a patient specific iliac bifurcation. The influence of the applied blood constitutive equations is monitored via the wall shear stress （WSS） distribution, magnitude and oscillations, non-Newtonian importance factors, and viscosity values according to the shear rate. The distribution of WSS on the vascular wall follows a pattern which is independent of the theological model chosen. On the other hand, the WSS magnitude and oscillations are directly related to the blood constitutive equations applied and the shear rate. It is concluded that the Newtonian approximation is satisfactory only in high shear and flow rates. Moreover, the Newtonian model seems to overestimate the possibility for the formation of atherosclerotic lesions or aneurysms at sites of the vascular wall where the WSS are oscillating.

Radiofrequency ablation-assisted liver resection a step toward bloodless liver resection

BACKGROUND： Liver resection is currently the most efficient curative approach for a wide variety of liver tumors. The application of modern techniques and new surgical devices has improved operative outcomes. Radiofrequency ablation is used more often for liver parenchymal transection. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation-assisted liver ***： A retrospective study of 145 consecutive patients who underwent radiofrequency ablation-assisted liver resection was performed. Intraoperative blood loss, need for transfusion or intraoperative Pringle maneuver, the duration of liver parenchymal transection, perioperative complications, and postoperative morbidity and mortality were all ***： Fifty minor and ninety-five major liver resections were performed. The mean intraoperative blood loss was 251 m L, with a transfusion rate of 11.7%. The Pringle maneuver was necessary in 12 patients（8.3%）. The mean duration for parenchymal transection was 51.75 minutes. There were 47 patients（32.4%） with postoperative complications. There is no mortality within 30 days after surgery. CONCLUSIONS： Radiofrequency ablation-assisted liver resection permits both major and minor liver resections with minimal blood loss and without occlusion of hepatic inflow. Furthermore it decreases the need for blood transfusion and reduces morbidity and mortality.

Theatrical Traces of the Past in the Contemporary Theatre： The Case of Simos Kakalas

This paper examines the contemporary theatre of Simos Kakalas, the director of Horos Theatre Company, and his troupe. The object of this study is the performances of the troupe during the period 2004-2016, which include：（1） the eight different versions of the dramatic idyll Golfo, written in 1894 by Spyridon Peresiadis; （2） the three different versions of the tragedy Erofili, written in Crete in 1595 by Georgios Hortatzis, and （3） the three different versions of the ancient Greek tragedy Euripides＇ Orestes written in 408 B.C. The research shows how these performances bring the young audience closer to the Greek theatre, tradition and identity, and at the same time they lead the audience＇s thought to current issues. It also explores how Kakalas brings the past closer to us to the present time, combining the poetic fifteen-syllable verse, the theatrical codes of the Greek ＂bouloukia＂（the wandering troupes who used to play at squares in the nineteenth century）, the technique of narration, parody and shadow theatre with postmodern style, manga masks, video projections and anime.
