The horticultural sector has undergone tremendous growth in Kenya and is now the second largest f.reign income earning sector in the country. Lake Naivasha is the hub of.large scale horticultural f.rming in Kenya. This growth coupled with increased use of.pesticides, may increase the possibility of.pesticide exposure and its associated risks to workers and residents of.the region. The purpose of.this study was to assess the symptoms commonly experienced by residents of.Naivasha town and their possible association to pesticide exposure. Purposive sampling of.residents f.om Kamere, Kwa Muia, Kioto and Karagita was perf.rmed, as these residential areas have signif.cant numbers of.f.ower f.rm workers. By random selection, a total of.801 community members were recruited to participate in the study and data was collected by completing the prepared questionnaire and f.om clinical examinations. Results indicate that several residents exhibited respiratory;skin, joints and bones;and nervous system symptoms. We f.und a higher f.equency of.symptoms among planters, weeders, harvesters than in sprayers working in horticultural f.rms. We recommend training to planters, weeders, harvesters who are mainly women (61.6%) in this study concerning pesticide use as do sprayers;and second, longer reentry times between the last spraying of.pesticide and entry of.these workers is warranted, particularly in greenhouses. In this regard, reentry times f.r greenhouses and f.elds established f.r specif.c pesticides in Europe, North America, Japan or Australia should be adapted by Kenya, and these guidelines enf.rced by the Government of.Kenya to reduce exposure to pesticides within this vulnerable work group. These workers should also use protective clothing including gloves and masks at all times while handling chemicals or recently sprayed plants or f.owers. Optimization of.Stealthwatch Network Security System f.r the Detection and Mitigation of.Distributed Denial of.Service (DDoS) Attack: Application to Smart Grid System

The Smart Grid is an enhancement of.the traditional grid system and employs new technologies and sophisticated communication techniques f.r electrical power transmission and distribution. The Smart Grid’s communication network shares inf.rmation about status of.its several integrated IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). However, the IEDs connected throughout the Smart Grid, open opportunities f.r attackers to interf.re with the communications and utilities resources or take clients’ private data. This development has introduced new cyber-security challenges f.r the Smart Grid and is a very concerning issue because of.emerging cyber-threats and security incidents that have occurred recently all over the world. The purpose of.this research is to detect and mitigate Distributed Denial of.Service [DDoS] with application to the Electrical Smart Grid System by deploying an optimized Stealthwatch Secure Network analytics tool. In this paper, the DDoS attack in the Smart Grid communication networks was modeled using Stealthwatch tool. The simulated network consisted of.Secure Network Analytic tools virtual machines (VMs), electrical Grid network communication topology, attackers and Target VMs. f.nally, the experiments and simulations were perf.rmed, and the research results showed that Stealthwatch analytic tool is very ef.ective in detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks in the Smart Grid System without causing any blackout or shutdown of.any internal systems as compared to other tools such as GNS3, NeSSi2, NISST f.amework, OMNeT++, INET f.amework, ReaSE, NS2, NS3, M5 Simulator, OPNET, PLC & TIA Portal management Sof.ware which do not have the capability to do so. Also, using Stealthwatch tool to create a security baseline f.r Smart Grid environment, contributes to risk mitigation and sound security hygiene.

AIAP: A Quality Control and Integrative Analysis Package to Improve ATAC-seq Data Analysis

Assay f.r transposase-accessible chromatin with high-throughput sequencing(ATAC-seq) is a technique widely used to investigate genome-wide chromatin accessibility. The recently published Omni-ATAC-seq protocol substantially improves the signal/noise ratio and reduces the input cell number. High-quality data are critical to ensure accurate *** tools have been developed f.r assessing sequencing quality and insertion size distribution f.r ATAC-seq data;however, key quality control(QC) metrics have not yet been established to accurately determine the quality of.ATAC-seq data. Here, we optimized the analysis strategy f.r ATAC-seq and def.ned a series of.QC metrics f.r ATAC-seq data,including reads under peak ratio(RUPr), background(BG), promoter enrichment(Pro En), subsampling enrichment(Sub En), and other measurements. We incorporated these QC tests into our recently developed ATAC-seq Integrative Analysis Package(AIAP) to provide a complete ATAC-seq analysis system, including quality assurance, improved peak calling, and downstream dif.erential analysis. We demonstrated a signif.cant improvement of.sensitivity(20%–60%) in both peak calling and dif.erential analysis by processing paired-end ATAC-seq datasets using AIAP. AIAP is compiled into Docker/Singularity, and it can be executed by one command line to generate a comprehensive QC report. We used ENCODE ATAC-seq data to benchmark and generate QC recommendations, and developed q ATACViewer f.r the userf.iendly interaction with the QC report. Transposons are ef.ective mutagens alternative to T-DNA f.r the generation of.insertional mutants in many plant species including those whose transf.rmation is inef.icient. The current strategies of.transposon tagging are usually slow and labor-intensive and yield low f.equency of.tagged lines. We have constructed a series of.transposon tagging vectors based on three approaches：（i） AcTPase controlled by glucocorticoid binding domain/VP16 acidic activation domain/Gal4 DNA-binding domain （GVG） chemical-inducible expression system; （ii） deletion of.AcTPase via Cre-lox site-specif.c recombination that was initially triggered by Ds excision; and （iii） suppression of.early transposition events in transf.rmed rice callus through a dual-f.nctional hygromycin resistance gene in a novel Ds element （HPT-Ds）, We tested these vectors in transgenic rice and characterized the transposition events. Background Soil Mercury: An Unrecognized Source of.Blood Mercury in Inf.nts?

Introduction: During the past f.ur decades, mercury (Hg) research f.cused on f.sh consumption has explained less than 22% of.Hg in human blood. One overlooked exposure pathway f.r inf.nts and young children is the concentration of.Hg in soils. Although 75% of.the U.S. population lives in urban areas near industrial f.cilities, minimal data exist regarding the concentration and speciation of.Hg in residential soils. Chronic exposure through ingestion of.low concentrations of.Hg in soils may explain a portion of.the blood Hg levels noted in inf.nts. Methods: Three relatively unexposed residential sites in a suburban community were selected. The primary route of.contamination was atmospheric deposition. Soils were digested in a nitric acid-hydrof.uoric acid solution and analyzed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Measured concentrations of.total Hg in local suburban soil samples were compared to levels measured in a national study of.27 remote and rural sites. The Al-Shahristani pharmacokinetic model, developed af.er the 1971 Iraqi Methyl Hg poisoning incident, was used to calculate the blood Hg concentration in a hypothetical year-old inf.nt. Results: Soil samples contained Hg concentrations ranging f.om 0.01 to 0.24 ppmw. The distribution of.Hg in the soil samples was non-linear and non-normal. The mean soil Hg concentrations at the three locations were 0.08, 0.05 and 0.08 ppm. Calculated blood Hg concentrations f.r a 10 kg, year-old inf.nt due to ingestion of.soil (200 mg/day) containing 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 ppm Hg were 0.08, 0.17 and 0.26 μg/L, respectively. Conclusions: The pilot study data appear to support the hypothesis that chronic, low-level soil ingestion may be a signif.cant source of.Hg f.r inf.nts. f.rther study is warranted.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus 2 is a major global health issue and is driving the need f.r new *** surf.ce spike protein,which plays a central role in virus inf.ction,is currently the target f.r vaccines and neutralizing *** emergence of.novel variants with multiple mutations in the spike protein may reduce the ef.ectiveness of.neutralizing antibodies by altering the binding activity of.the protein with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2).To understand the impact of.spike protein mutations on the binding interactions required f.r virus inf.ction and the ef.ectiveness of.neutralizing monoclonal antibody(mAb)therapies,the binding activities of.the original spike protein receptor binding domain(RBD)sequence and the reported spike protein variants were investigated using surf.ce plasmon *** addition,the interactions of.the ACE2 receptor,an antispike mAb(mAb1),a neutralizing mAb(mAb2),the original spike RBD sequence,and mutants D614G,N501Y,N439K,Y453f.and E484K were *** to the original RBD,the Y453f.and N501Y mutants displayed a signif.cant increase in ACE2 binding af.inity,whereas D614G had a substantial reduction in binding *** mAb-RBD mutant proteins displayed a reduction in binding af.inities relative to the original RBD,except f.r the E484K-mAb1 *** potential neutralizing capability of.mAb1 and mAb2 was ***,mAb1 f.iled to inhibit the ACE2-RBD interaction while mAb2 inhibited the ACE2-RBD interactions f.r all RBD mutants,except mutant E484K,which only displayed partial blocking.

MDCT imaging f.llowing nephrectomy f.r renal cell carcinoma: Protocol optimization and patterns of.tumor recurrence

The purpose of.this pictorial essay is to review the common and uncommon sites of.renal cell carcinoma recurrence throughout the body by examining their appearances on computerized tomography(CT). CT imaging protocols will be discussed. The sites of.recurrence have been categorized into 4 groups: chest and mediastinum, abdomen and pelvis, musculoskeletal, and neurological. f.r each site of.recurrence, a representative CT image correlate with discussion is provided. The unique CT appearance of.renal cell carcinoma recurrence and how it can be used in lesion detection will be discussed. Renal cell carcinoma recurrences are hypervascular like the primary tumor, which can aid in not only lesion detection but also in some cases, dif.erentiation f.om other primary tumors. Through CT case review of.various sites of.recurrence, lesions are shown to be easily seen on arterial phase while sometimes being nearly inconspicuous on venous or delayed phases. Coronal and sagittal reconstructions can also improve diagnostic sensitivity. CT is the most commonly used imaging tool f.r surveillance of.renal cell carcinoma recurrence af.er nephrectomy. Knowledge of.sites of.recurrence as well as the utility of.arterial phase imaging and multiplanar reconstructions will aid in optimizing detection of.disease recurrence.
