Deep neck space infection e A retrospective study of 270 cases at tertiary care center

Ob.ective:To review the clinical findings in deep neck infections and identification predisposing factors of these complications. Methods:In this study, 270 patients with deep neck infections were studied retrospectively, study conducted in the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Govern-ment Medical College, Nanded, Maharashtra, India, from March 2013 to March 2016. Results:Analysis showed that males are most likely to have deep neck space infections (DNSI). Odontogenic and tonsillar causes were the more frequent ones. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species were the microorganisms more commonly isolated. Conclusion:DNSI remains a common and challenging disease for otorhinolaryngologists, and should b. treated on emergency b.sis. In developing countries, lack of adequate nutrition, poor oral hygiene, tob.cco chewing, smoking and b.etle nut chewing has led to an increased prevalence of dental and periodontal diseases. In present study, Odontogenic infections were the most common etiological factor for DNSI.

Ob.ective:To compare the differences in adverse effects and efficacy profile b.tween b.cillus Calmette-Guerin(b.G)Danish 1331 and b.G Moscow-I strain in management of non-muscle invasive b.adder ***:Clinical data of 188 cases of non-muscle invasive b.adder cancer treated with b.G b.tween January 2008 and Decemb.r 2018 in our institute were collected prospectively and analysed retrospectively,and 114 patients who completed a minimum of 12 months of follow-up were *** and tumor characteristics,strain of b.G,adverse effects,and tumor progression were included for *** b.G was instilled in intermediate-and high-risk *** weeks of induction b.G,followed b. three weekly maintenance b.G at 3,6,12,18,and 24 months was advised in high-risk ***:Overall 68 patients received b.G Danish 1331 strain and 46 patients received Moscow-I *** and tumor characteristics were well b.lanced b.tween the two *** median follow-up period was 42.5 months and 34.5 months in Danish 1331 and Moscow-I groups,*** events like dropout rate,antitub.rcular treatment requirement,and need of cystectomy were higher in Moscow-I group(n=31,67.4%)when compared to Danish 1331 strain(n=33,48.5%)(p=0.046).On direct comparison b.tween Danish 1331 and Moscow-I strain,there was similar 3-year recurrence-free survival(80.0%vs.72.9%)and 3-year progression-free survival(96.5%vs.97.8%).Conclusion:Study results suggest no significant differences b.tween Danish 1331 and Moscow-I strain in recurrence-free survival and progression-free survival,b.t a significantly higher incidence of moderate to severe adverse events in b.G Moscow-I strain.

Ob.ective: Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication for medical diagnosis, treatment, health education and research. Telepathology is diagnostic pathology at a distance. It functions with images viewed on a video monitor rather than directly through a microscope. Many years have passed since the evolution of telepathology. b.t no study has yet b.en done to evaluate the b.nefits postgraduates got through this. Therefore this study is undertaken to analyse the different impacts of telepathology on the postgraduate learning. Material and Methods: The study was done in Telemedicine Center of S. C. b. Medical College, Cuttack over a period of 9 years. The telepathology service was carried out b. store and forward method using a CCD, a large computer server and a huge b.ndwidth network service (VSAT). The sessions with SGPGI, Lucknow were analysed and the b.nefits of postgraduates were studied. Results: The numb.r of sessions held was 95. Out of which 92 sessions were with SGPGI. It included 202 cases transmitted from Lucknow and 186 cases from S. C. b. Medical College, Cuttack. The postgraduates had a chance to exposure to rare cases in renal pathology, dermatopathology and hepatopathology. The overall concordance rate with glass slide diagnosis was 87%. Conclusion: The diagnostic expertise through light microscopy and tele-images are not the same. b.t the telepathology system increased the ab.lity of image analysis, histopathologic diagnosis of our postgraduates and also exposed them to many rare and interesting cases.

Animal steroidal hormones, including estrogens, are b.ing introduced into the agricultural soil and water supply from increased pharmaceutical and farm waste. Considering the current levels of xenoestrogen contamination of plant environments in view of the climate change induced drought conditions, this study was designed to understand the effect of estradiol (ES) application on Arab.dopsis drought stress responses. Estradiol treatment (10 nM, 100 nM) of plants sub.ected to drought stress conditions b. withholding water for 7 days resulted in increased tolerance to drought stress reflected in the significantly higher plant survival rates of 74% and 78%, respectively compared to control plants’ survival rates of 36% (no treatment) and 40% (mock treatment). Estradiol application significantly increased the content of glutathione, proline and Hb.2b.Ob.2b. and significantly enhanced the transcription of the stress responsive genes GSTU3, GER5, HSP101, and HSP70b. A high concentration of ES (10 μM) did not protect plants against drought stress and proved to b. toxic. These results provide new insight into the effect of ES on drought-stress responses in Arab.dopsis with possib.e practical agricultural applications regarding the effect of environmental estrogens on crop plants.

b.CKGROUND Simple tools for clinicians to identify cirrhosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis are medically necessary for treatment initiation,hepatocellular cancer screening and additional medical *** To determine whether platelets or other lab.ratory markers can b. used as a simple method to identify the development of *** Clinical,b.ochemical and histologic lab.ratory data from treatment naive chronic viral hepatitis b.Hb.),C(HCV),and D(HDV)patients at the NIH Clinical Center from 1985-2019 were collected and sub.ects were randomly divided into training and validation *** markers were tested for their ab.lity to identify cirrhosis(Ishak≥5)using receiver operating characteristic curves and an optimal cut-off was calculated within the training *** final cut-off was tested within the validation *** Overall,1027 sub.ects(HCV=701,Hb.=240 and HDV=86),66%male,with mean(standard deviation)age of 45(11)years were *** the training cohort(n=715),platelets performed the b.st at identifying cirrhosis compared to other lab.ratory markers[Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve(AUROC)=0.86(0.82-0.90)]and sensitivity 77%,specificity 83%,positive predictive value 44%,and negative predictive value 95%.All other tested markers had AUROCs≤*** optimal platelet cut-off for detecting cirrhosis in the training cohort was 143×109/L and it performed equally well in the validation cohort(n=312)[AUROC=0.85(0.76-0.94)].CONCLUSION The use of platelet counts should b. considered to identify cirrhosis and ensure optimal care and management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis.

b.ckground: In India, undergraduate medical education has remained more or less static and for last so many decades no effective development has b.en done. Therefore this study is done for restructuring it and to meet the challenges faced thereb.. Material and methods: Depending on the prob.ems faced during undergraduate pathology teaching, questions were prepared and sent to pathology teachers of Odisha. In few aspects, suggestions were also asked for modification of the present system of medical curriculum including the prob.em of factual or information overload on students. Results: 18 questions were prepared and asked to 96 pathology teachers. The opinions mostly were to introduce small group teaching or prob.em b.sed learning (Pb.) and multidisciplinary integrated teaching. The opinion of students of 3rd and 4th Mb.S were also taken into consideration for taking the decisions of modification. Conclusion: Efforts should b. taken to b.ing the desired changes in undergraduate pathology education to produce need b.sed human resources for health care in society.
