Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) poses a risk of opportunistic infections with a variety of organisms with Nocardia being the most common pathogen followed by mycobacteria and fungi. Case presentation: A 7-year-old female child, presented with headache and multiple episodes of vomiting. There was no fever or altered sensorium. On examination, there were no focal deficits or cranial nerve palsies. An MRI brain showed a small T2 hyperintense lesion in the left superior parietal lobe suggestive of an abscess. She was diagnosed as PAP based on CT chest and bronchioloalveolar lavage 7 months earlier and treated with corticosteroids. A left parieto-occipital craniotomy was done with drainage of abscess and abscess wall excision. Histopathology revealed a suppurative lesion with slender septate acute angle branching hyphae which were positive on fungal stains. Culture done on the pus was positive for Aspergil us fumigatus. The patient was treated with voriconazole and stable at 1 year follow-up. Conclusion: Opportunistic infections are common in patients diagnosed with PAP. High index of clinical suspicion and early diagnosis are important for favorable outcome.

Electron Emission of Graphene-Diamond Hybrid Films Using Paraffin Wax as Diamond Seeding Source

We present a scalable, reproducible and economic process for the fabrication of diamond and diamond-graphene hybrid films using paraffin wax as a seeding source for diamond. The films were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Raman spectra show the characteristic band of diamond at 1332 cm-1 and the D, G, and 2D bands of graphene at 1360, 1582 and 2709 cm-1, respectively. Electron microscopy confirms the microcrystalline nature of the diamond films with crystal size in the range of 0.5 μm to 1.0 μm, and the hybrid film consists of microcrystalline diamond attached to thin, semi-transparent graphene flakes. The graphene-diamond hybrid films exhibit a turn-on field of about 3.6 V/μm with a prolonged current stability of at least 135 h.

The experimental work has been carried out to study the absorption-desorption properties of the silica aerogels, for their use in oil spill cleanup application. For these studies, silica aerogel granules were prepared by two step acid– base catalyzed sol–gel process, involving ambient pressure drying of alcogels, were made use for absorption & desorption studies of different organic liquids. The optimal molar ratio of precursors tetraethoxysilane (TEOS):Methanol (MeOH):Oxalic acid:NH4OH:NH4F:trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) was kept constant at 1:16.5:0.71:0.58:0.60:0.98, respectively. In all, four alkanes, four aromatic compounds, four alcohols and three oils were used for absorption and desorption studies of organic liquids. The absorption capacity of aerogel sample was quantified by measuring the mass of the organic liquid absorbed by unit mass of the aerogel sample. The hydrophobic aerogel granules showed a very high uptake capacity and high rate of uptake. The desorption of solvents and oils was studied by keeping the liquid absorbed aerogel granules at various temperatures and weighing them at regular time intervals until all the absorbed liquid got totally desorbed. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the aerogel structure was not much affected by the solvent absorption, while the oil absorption led to the shrinkage, resulting in a dense structure after desorption.

A simple and rapid liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric(LC-MS/MS) assay method has been developed and fully validated for simultaneous quantification of pioglitazone and candesartan in human *** was used as an internal *** analytes were extracted from human plasma samples by solid-phase extraction technique using a Strata-X 33 mm polymeric *** reconstituted samples were chromatographed on a C18 column by using a 80:20(v/v) mixture of acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/*** calibration curves obtained were linear(rZ0.99) over the concentration range of 15-3000 ng/mL for pioglitazone and 5-608 ng/mL for *** results of the intra-and inter-day precision and accuracy studies were well within the acceptable limits.A run time of 2.7 min for each sample made it possible to analyze more than 300 plasma samples per *** proposed method was found to be applicable to clinical studies.

A comparative study was made on the tissue specific expression of glutathione transferases (GST) in brain and testis after exposure of rat to phenobarbitol (PB) and β-methylcholanthrene (MC). Glutathione transferases, a family of multifunctional proteins are involved in intracellular transport processes and in detoxication of electrophilic xenobiotics by catalyzing reactions such as conjugation, isomerization, reduction and thiolysis. On purification, the yield of GST proteins by affinity chromatography was 39% in testis and 32% in brain. The affinity purified testis GSTs were resolved by chromatofocusing into six anionic and four cationic isozymes, and in brain glutathione transferases were resolved into four anionic and three cationic isozymes, suggesting the presence of multiple isozymes with Yc, Yb, Yβ and Yδ in both of them. In testis and brain, these isozymes at identical pI values showed variable functions with a battery of substrates and the cationic isozymes of brain and testis showed identical properties in CHP (cumene hydroperoxide) at pH values of above 7.0. Substrate specificity studies and immunoblot analysis of testis and brain proteins revealed that they play a predominant role in the detoxication of phenobarbitol or β-methylcholanthrene. Expression of the isozymes in testis and brain on exposure to PB and MC indicated elevated subunit variation. In both testis and brain, Yδ of π class was expressed on PB treatment and Yc of α class and Yβ of μ class was expressed in MC treated testis and only Yc was predominantly expressed in MC treated brain. Thus these subunits expression is considered as markers for carcinogenesis and specific to chemical toxicity under phenobarbitol and β-methylcholanthrene stress.

A rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric （LC-MS/MS） assay method has been developed and fully validated for the simultaneous quantification of telmisartan and amlodipine in human plasma. Carbamazepine was used as an internal standard. Analytes and the internal standard were extracted from human plasma by solid-phase extraction technique using Waters Oasis HLB 1 cm3 （30 mg） extraction cartridge. The reconstituted samples were chromatographed on a Hypurity advance C18 column （50mm × 4.6mm, 5 gm） using a mixture of acetonitrile -5 mM ammonium acetate buffer （pH-4.0）（50：50, v/v） as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8mL/min. The calibration curve obtained was linear （r_〉0.99） over the concentration range of 2.01-400.06 ng/mL for telmisartan and 0.05 -10.01 ng/mL for amlodipine. Method validation was performed as per FDA guidelines and the results met the acceptance criteria. A run time of 2.5 min for each sample made it possible to analyze more than 400 human plasma samples per day. The proposed method was found to be applicable to clinical studies.

Objective:To study the antioxidant efficacy of Commiphora mukul(***) gum resin ethanolic extract in streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic ***:The male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups of eight animals each:Control group(C),CM-treated control group(C_+CMEE),Diabetic control group(D),CM- treated diabetic group(D_+CMEE).Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ(55 mg/kg/ bwt).After being confirmed the diabetic rats were treated with *** gum resin ethanolic extract(CMEE) for 60 *** biochemical estimations like antioxidant,oxidative stress marker enzymes and hepatic marker enzymes of tissues were ***:The diabetic rats showed increased level of enzymatic activities aspartate aminotransaminase(AST),alanine aminotransaminase(ALT) in liver and kidney and oxidative markers like lipid peroxidation(LPO) and protein oxidation(PO) in pancreas and heart. Antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly decreased in the pancreas and heart compared to control *** of CMEE(200 mg/kg bw) to diabetic rats for 60 days significantly reversed the above parameters towards ***:In conclusion,our data indicate the preventive role of *** against STZ-induced diabetic oxidative stress;hence this plant could be used as an adjuvant therapy for the prevention and/or management of diabetes and aggravated antioxidant status.
