Camivores play a central role in ecosystem processes by exerting top-down control, while fire exerts bottom-up con- trol in ecosystems throughout the world, yet, little is known about how fire affects short-term carnivore distributions across the landscape. Through the use of a long-term data set we investigated the distribution of lions, during the daytime, in relation to burned areas in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. We found that lions avoid burned areas despite the fact that herbivores, their prey, are attracted to burned areas. Prey attraction, however, likely results from the reduction in cover caused by burning, that may thereby decrease lion hunting success. Lions also do not preferentially utilize the edges of burned areas over unburned areas de- spite the possibility that edges would combine the benefit of cover with proximity to abundant prey. Despite the fact that lions avoid burned areas, lion territory size and reproductive success were not affected by the proportion of the territory burned each year. Therefore, burning does not seem to reduce lion fitness perhaps because of the heterogeneity of burned areas across the landscape or because it is possible that when hunting at night lions visit burned areas despite their daytime avoidance of these ar- eas .

Background:To evaluate the accuracy and safety of micro radial and arcuate keratotomy incisions constructed by a femtosecond laser system with a curved contact patient interface in porcine ***:Partial thickness micro radial and arcuate keratotomy incisions were constructed in porcine eyes with a femtosecond laser system and evaluated for precision of depth,quality,and *** coherence tomography was used to determine the accuracy and precision of incision *** endothelial safety was assessed by a fluorescent live/dead cell viability assay to demonstrate laser-induced endothelial cell *** was evaluated by ease of opening and examination of ***:In two micro radial incision groups,intended incision depths of 50%and 80%resulted in mean achieved depths of 50.01%and 77.69%,*** three arcuate incision groups,intended incision depths of 80%,600μm or 100μm residual uncut bed thickness resulted in mean achieved depths of 80.16%,603.03μm and residual bed of 115μm,*** loss of endothelial cell density occurred when the residual corneal bed was maintained at a minimum of 85-116μ*** incisions were easy to open,and interfaces were ***:A femtosecond laser system with curved contact interface created precise and reproducible micro radial and arcuate keratotomy *** and precision of the incision depth and preservation of endothelial cell density demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of the system.

Background Pulmonary veins （PV） and the atria undergo electrical and structural remodeling in atrial fibrillation （AF）. This study aimed to determine PV and left atrial （LA） reverse remodeling after catheter ablation for AF assessed by chest computed tomography （CT）. methods PV electrophysiologic studies and catheter ablation were performed in 63 patients （68% male; mean ± SD age： 56 ± 10 years） with symptomatic AF （49% paroxysmal, 51% persistent）. Chest CT was performed before and 3 months after catheter ablation. Results At baseline, patients with persistent AF had a greater LA volume （91 ±29 cm3 vs. 66 ± 27 cm3; P = 0.003） and mean PV ostial area （241 ＋ 43 mm2 vs. 212 ± 47 mm2; P = 0.03） than patients with paroxysmal AF. There was no significant correlation between the effective refractory period and the area of the left superior PV ostium. At 3 months of follow-up after ablation, 48 patients （76%） were AF free on or off antiarrhythmic drugs. There was a significant reduction in LA volume （77 ±31 cm3 to 70 ± 28 cm3; P 〈 0.001） and mean PV ostial area （224 ± 48 mm2 to 182 ± 43 mm2; P 〈 0.001）. Patients with persistent AF had more reduction in LA volume （11.8 ± 12.8 cm3 vs. 4.0 ± 11.2 cm3; P = 0.04） and PV ostial area （62 mm2 vs. 34 mm2; P = 0.04） than those who have paroxysmal AF. The reduction of the averaged PV ostial area was significantly correlated with the reduction of LA volume （r = 0.38, P = 0.03）. Conclusions Catheter ablation of AF improves structural remodeling ofPV ostia and left atrium. This finding is more apparent in patients with persistent AF treated by catheter ablation.

本文根据现在通行的和将来可能产生的土地经营及耕种措施讨论新南威尔士南部实行的土壤保持耕作措施.首先提到在实行这种耕作制的田地上,对一个草田轮作的给定地点来说,决定土壤侵蚀强度的一个最重要因子是土地管理.我们通过研究新南威尔士南部的传统耕作制来说明土壤保持这个概念.由于传统耕作方法的安排常常与高强度暴雨的影响在时间上吻合,由此看来,与耕作相联系的主要侵蚀危害是经常发生的.有人提出在新南威尔士南部的任意一块可耕地管理策略中,土壤保持的最重要特征是与此有关的耕作量.这项工作的成效和缺点是与传统的土壤保持,土地管理措施,比如轮作中周期较长的牧草期,较短的休闲耕作地和等高耕作相联系的,在此将对这一点加以讨论.这一讨论强调了新的土壤保持土地管理措施的必要性.在目前可以采用的方法当中,我们在理论上主张,硬茬条播是控制侵蚀的最好方法,这一点将用Wagga Wagga研究中心的通行结果给以说明.但是,也有人指出在某些地方,排除耕作这一环节在农艺上是行不通的,因此,这些地方的耕作措施还需进一步研究.
