Variation f.r Health-Enhancing Compounds and Traits in Onion (Allium cepa L.) Germplasm

Consumption of.onion has been associated with reduced incidence of.chronic diseases. Phenolic, organosulf.r and carbohydrate compounds present are largely responsible f.r these ef.ects. This study examined compositional variation f.r health-enhancing compounds in a genetically diverse collection of.onion cultivars. Total antioxidant activity and aroma prof.les were characterized. Signif.cant variation in bulb concentration f.r total and individual phenolic compounds, thiosulf.nates, carbohydrates, and total and soluble solids was f.und. The range of.variation was particularly large (>50-f.ld dif.erence between the cultivars with the highest and lowest content) f.r f.ucto-oligosaccharides (f.S) and the polyphenols quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate and epicatechin gallate. Amino acid prof.les varied signif.cantly as well with substantial variation (~10 f.ld) observed in both total and essential amino acids. Total antioxidant activity was positively correlated with polyphenols content, and quercetin in particular (r = 0.83), suggesting a major contribution f.om phenolic compounds to onion antioxidant properties. Signif.cant positive correlation was also f.und between solids and thiosulf.nates content (r = 0.74) and between solids and f.S (r = 0.81), suggesting a dilution/concentration ef.ect f.r organosulf.r compounds and f.S in onion bulbs. The present study revealed broad variation f.r health-enhancing compounds content in onion germplasm, which can be exploited in breeding programs aiming at increasing onion nutraceutical value.

Memory def.cit,which is of.en associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue f.r *** till now,all potential drug candidates have f.iled to produce satisf. ctory ***,in the search f.r a solution,we f.und that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of.the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial f.r object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of.*** this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively unaf.ected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of.ORM in young animals and prevent ORM def.cits in rodent models of.aging and Alzheimer’s ***,we f.und that the prevention of.memory def.cits was mediated through the upregulation of.neuronal arbo rization and spine density,as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic f.ctor(BDNf..A knockdown of.BDNf.gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of.neuronal structural plasticity and in the prevention of.ORM *** f.ndings suggest that BDNf.mediated neuronal structural plasticity in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of.memory def.cits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of.aging and Alzheimer’s ***,our f.ndings of.RGS14414gene-mediated activation of.neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of.memory def.cits.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors:Are tumors smaller than 2 cm truly indolent?

Contribution of.galectin-1, a glycan-binding protein, to gastrointestinal tumor progression

Gastrointestinal cancer is a group of.tumors that af.ect multiple sites of.the digestive system, including the stomach, liver, colon and pancreas. These cancers are very aggressive and rapidly metastasize, thus identif.ing ef.ective targets is crucial f.r treatment. Galectin-1(Gal-1) belongs to a f.mily of.glycan-binding proteins, or lectins, with the ability to cross-link specif.c glycoconjugates. A variety of.biological activities have been attributed to Gal-1 at dif.erent steps of.tumor progression. Herein, we summarize the current literature regarding the roles of.Gal-1 in gastrointestinal malignancies. Accumulating evidence shows that Gal-1 is drastically up-regulated in human gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissues, both in tumor epithelial and tumor-associated stromal cells. Moreover, Gal-1 makes a crucial contribution to the pathogenesis of.gastrointestinal malignancies, f.voring tumor development, aggressiveness, metastasis, immunosuppression and angiogenesis. We also highlight that alterations in Gal-1-specif.c glycoepitopes may be relevant f.r gastrointestinal cancer progression. Despite the f.ndings obtained so f.r, f.rther f.nctional studies are still required. Elucidating the precise molecular mechanisms modulated by Gal-1 underlying gastrointestinal tumor progression, might lead to the development of.novel Gal-1-based diagnostic methods and/or therapies.
