In situ and operando infrared spectroscopies are powerful techniques to support the design of novel materials for batteries and the development of new battery systems.These techniques can support the study of batteries by identifying the formation of new species and monitoring electrochemical energy stability.However,few works have employed these techniques,which can be used to investigate various materials,including systems beyond lithium-ion technology,in the research of batteries.Therefore,this review presents a comprehensive overview focusing on the main contributions of in situ and operando infrared spectroscopy for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)and other battery systems.These techniques can successfully identify the formation of species during the electrolyte reduction,electrode degradation,and the formation of the solid-electrolyte interphase(sEI)layer.From these outcomes,it is possible to conclude that this characterization approach should be employed as a protocol to overcome remaining issues in batteries,consequently supporting battery research.This review aims to be a guide on how infrared spectroscopy can contribute to monitoring battery systems and to lead researchers interested in applying this technique.

The Eocene–Oligocene southern Ocean is thought to have played a major role in cetacean evolution.Yet,fossils from its heart—Antarctica—are rare,and come almost exclusively from the Eocene La Meseta and submeseta formations of Marambio(seymour)Island.Here,we provide a summary and update of this crucial fossil assemblage,and discuss its relevance in the broader context of cetacean evolution.To date,Eocene specimens from Antarctica include basilosaurids,a group of archaic stem cetaceans that had already fully adapted to life in water;and the archaic toothed mysticete Llanocetus,the second oldest crown cetacean on record(ca.34 Ma).This Eocene co-occurrence of stem and crown cetaceans is highly unusual,and otherwise only observed in Peru.Though related,at least some of the Antarctic species appear to be different from,and notably larger than their Peruvian counterparts,suggesting an early differentiation of the high latitude cetacean fauna.

Recent advances in graphene and other 2D materials

The isolation of the first two-dimensional material, graphene-a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice-opened new exciting opportunities in the field of condensed matter physics and materials. Its isolation and subsequent studies demonstrated that it was possible to obtain sheets of atomically thin crystals and that these were stable, and they also began to show its outstanding properties, thus opening the door to a whole new family of materials, known as two-dimensional materials or 2D materials. The great interest in different 2D materials is motivated by the variety of properties they show, being candidates for numerous applications.Additionally, the combination of 2D crystals allows the assembly of composite, on-demand materials, known as van der Waals heterostructures, which take advantage of the properties of those materials to create functionalities that otherwise would not be accessible. For example, the combination of 2D materials, which can be done with high precision, is opening up opportunities for the study of new challenges in fundamental physics and novel applications. Here we review the latest fundamental discoveries in the area of 2D materials and offer a perspective on the future of the field.

Alzheimer's disease is the most prevalent type of dementia today,discovered and described by Alois Alzheimer in 1907.According to the World Alzheimer Report 2021,75%of people with dementia worldwide are undiagnosed,equivalent to 41 million people(Gauthier et al.,2021).With each passing year,the number of people affected by these diseases is increasing,and the estimates of suffering from them in the future are growing.

The Phantom Menace:latest findings on effector biology in the rice blast fungus

Magnaporthe oryzae is a hemibiotrophic fungus responsible for the economically devastating and recalcitrant rice blast disease.However,the blast fungus is not only restricted to rice plants as it can also infect wheat,millet,and other crops.Despite previous outstanding discoveries aimed to understand and control the disease,the fungus remains one of the most important pathogens that threatens global food security.To cause disease,M.oryzae initiates morphological changes to attach,penetrate,and colonize rice cells,all while suppressing plant immune defenses that would otherwise hinder its proliferation.As such,M.oryzae actively secretes a battery of small proteins called“effectors”to manipulate host machinery.In this review,we summarize the latest findings in effector identification,expression,regulation,and functionality.We review the most studied effectors and their roles in pathogenesis.Additionally,we discern the current methodologies to structurally catalog effectors,and we highlight the importance of climate change and its impact on the future of rice blast disease.

Main environmental variables influencing the abundance of plant species under risk category

Determining climatic and physiographic variables in Mexico’s major ecoregions that are limiting to biodiversity and species of high conservation concern is essential for their conservation.Yet,at the national level to date,few studies have been performed with large data sets and crossconfirmation using multiple statistical analyses.Here,we used 25 endemic,rare and endangered species from 3610 sampling points throughout Mexico and 25 environmental attributes,including average precipitation for different seasons of the year,annual dryness index,slope of the terrain;and maximum,minimum and average temperatures to test our hypothesis that these species could be assessed with the same weight among all variables,showing similar indices of importance.Our results using principal component analysis,covariation analysis by permutations,and random forest regression showed that summer precipitation,length of the frost-free period,spring precipitation,winter precipitation and growing season precipitation all strongly influence the abundance of tropical species.In contrast,annual precipitation and the balance at different seasons(summer and growing season)were the most relevant variables on the temperate region species.For dry areas,the minimum temperature of the coldest month and the maximum temperature of the warmest month were the most significant variables.Using these different associations in different climatic regions could support a more precise management and conservation plan for the preservation of plant species diversity in forests under different global warming scenarios.

Electrical double-layer capacitors(EDLCs)consist of energy storage devices that present high-power and moderate energy density.The electrolyte and electrode physicochemical properties are crucial for improving their overall energy storage capabilities.Therefore,the stability of the EDLCs’materials is the primary focus of this study.since energy storage depends on the specific capacitance,and also on the square of the maximum capacitive cell voltage(UMCV).Thus,electrodes with high specific surface area(ssA)and electrolytes with excellent electrochemical stability are commonly reported in the literature.Aqueous electrolytes are safer and green devices compared to other organic-based solutions.On the other hand,their UMCVis reduced compared to other electrolytes(e.g.,organic-based and ionic liquids).In this sense,spanning the UMCVfor aqueous-based electrolytes is a’hot topic’research.Unfortunately,the lack of protocols to establish reliable UMCVvalues has culminated in the publishing of several conflicting results.Herein,we confirm that multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)housed in cells degrade and produce CO_(2) under abusive polarisation conditions.It is probed by employing electrochemical techniques,in-situ FTIR and in-situ Raman spectroscopies.From these considerations,the current study uses spectro-electrochemical techniques to support the correct determination of the electrode and electrolyte stability conditions as a function of the operating electrochemical parameters.

Porous organic molecular materials(POMMs)are an emergent class of molecular-based materials characterized by the formation of extended porous frameworks,mainly held by non-covalent interactions.POMMs represent a variety of chemical families,such as hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks,porous organic salts,porous organic cages,C-H···πmicroporous crystals,supramolecular organic frameworks,π-organic frameworks,halogen-bonded organic framework,and intrinsically porous molecular materials.In some porous materials such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks,the integration of multiscale has been adopted to build materials with multifunctionality and optimized properties.Therefore,considering the significant role of hierarchy in porous materials and the growing importance of POMMs in the realm of synthetic porous materials,we consider it appropriate to dedicate for the first time a critical review covering both topics.Herein,we will provide a summary of literature examples showcasing hierarchical POMMs,with a focus on their main synthetic approaches,applications,and the advantages brought forth by introducing hierarchy.

背景:目前对肝移植患者胆管括约肌疾病的认识严重不足。本研究旨在描述基于最新修订的罗马Ⅳ标准,肝移植患者乳头狭窄(Ps)和胆管括约肌功能障碍(FBsD)的发生率和临床结局。方法:筛选2003年1月至2019年12月间接受内镜逆行性胆胰管造影(ERCP)的肝移植患者,从电子病历和内镜数据库中提取其临床资料及内镜发现,并收集ERCP检查时及ERCP术后1个月的实验室检查结果和临床结局。结果:在1,307例肝移植患者中,336例接受了849次ERCP。13例(1.0%)符合罗马Ⅳ的Ps诊断标准[既往称为Oddi括约肌功能障碍(ODs)Ⅰ型],14例(1.0%)符合FBsD诊断标准(既往称为sOD Ⅱ型)。13例Ps患者和10例FBsD患者接受了胆管狭窄成形术,术后1个月,分别有85%、61%和92%的Ps患者总胆红素(P=0.019)、γ谷氨酰转移酶(P=0.087)和碱性磷酸酶(P=0.003)下降,而在FBsD患者,上述指标下降的患者比例分别为50%(P=0.721)、70%(P=0.013)和80%(P=0.093)。所有最初疑似BFsD的14例患者在随访中均调整了最终诊断。结论:肝移植术后Ps的发生并不常见,发生率仅1%。我们的数据并不支持肝移植术后FBsD的诊断。狭窄成形术治疗肝移植术后Ps患者安全有效。

海岸沙地提供了诸多宝贵的生态系统服务,例如耕地保护、水分供应和生物多样性保护,因此海岸沙地代表了重要的栖息地保护区。因为海岸沙地环境恶劣、水资源匮乏、养分贫瘠,所以土壤微生物群落对维持植物多样性至关重要。就海岸沙地的生态系统保护而言,外来入侵植物是主要威胁。本文探讨了沿海地区入侵植物食用日中花(Carpobrotus edulis)对细菌群落功能及结构的各种影响。沙地中土壤有机质含量低,微生物活性有限,所以沙地是一种颇具挑战性的底物。因此,在评估食用日中花对生态系统的影响之前需要对细菌提取进行优化,并开展功能评估。本文首先从群落水平生理特征(CLPP)的角度,比较了采用不同土壤储量、样品量、提取液等12种提取方法对沙地群落功能活性的影响,然后又探讨了食用日中花入侵的沙地菌落功能(利用Biolog Ecoplates)与结构变化(利用PCR-DGGE)。血细胞计数发现盐溶液持续增殖了细菌细胞(P≤0.001)。主成分分析(PCA)结果显示,在有限时间框架(0–24 h)内,碳底物消耗没有显著变化。通过对比天然区与非天然区(种间)及天然区(种内)之间食用日中花入侵后的变化,发现了一种与众不同的碳底物利用模式,食用日中花入侵对群落功能的影响因地而异,而与之相辅相成的是,PCR-DGGE结果表明原沙地的菌落结构不同于食用日中花入侵后沙地的菌落结构。
