Reuse of port industrial heritage in tourist cities:Shipyards as case studies

The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into *** such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amsterdam,and Hamburg have port industrial complexes of high tangible and intangible heritage value that could totally or partially disappear,resulting in an irreparable loss of their scientific,architectural,social,technological,and historical *** that in mind,Adaptive Reuse(AR)of the built heritage allows the industrial memory of the ports to be preserved by turning them into new functional centres within the existing urban *** occurs in the context of the contemporary challenges of those cities,such as touristification,the circular economy and climate change,while guaranteeing the life cycle of those *** article analyses two case studies—the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij(NDSM)and the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij(RDM)shipyards,both in the Netherlands—in order to contribute to the knowledge of AR of Port Industrial *** are two examples of good practices in port industrial heritage interventions,where the factors behind their acclaim can be easily highlighted.A multi-scale methodology is therefore used and tailored to the case of port industrial heritage,based on analysing previous studies of the heritage in different spheres and on different scales.A relationship matrix tool is thus *** enables a comparative study to be conducted,using key variables and indicators,and considering qualitative and quantitative *** provides extensive output information for each case study,which is summarised in the most favourable factors for the success of the AR of this port industrial heritage.

Predicting the clothing insulation through machine learning algorithms:A comparative analysis and a practical approach

Since indoor clothing insulation is a key element in thermal comfort models,the aim of the present study is proposing an approach for predicting it,which could assist the occupants of a building in terms of recommendations regarding their *** that,a systematic analysis of input variables is exposed,and 13 regression and 12 classification machine learning algorithms were developed and *** results are based on data from 3352 questionnaires and 21 input variables from a field study in mixed-mode office buildings in *** temperature at 6 a.m.,indoor air temperature,indoor relative humidity,comfort temperature and gender were the most relevant features for predicting clothing *** comparing machine learning algorithms,decision tree-based algorithms with Boosting techniques achieved the best *** proposed model provides an efficient method for forecasting the clothing insulation level and its application would entail optimising thermal comfort and energy efficiency.

Background The nationally determined contribution（NDC） presented by Argentina within the framework of the Paris Agreement is aligned with the decisions made in the context of the United Nations Framework Conven-tion on Climate Change（UNFCCC） on the reduction of emissions derived from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as forest carbon conservation（REDD+）. In addition, climate change constitutes one of the greatest threats to forest biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, the soil organic carbon（SOC） stocks of native forests have not been incorporated into the Forest Reference Emission Levels calculations and for conservation planning under cli-mate variability due to a lack of information. The objectives of this study were:（i） to model SOC stocks to 30 cm of native forests at a national scale using climatic, topographic and vegetation as predictor variables, and（ii） to relate SOC stocks with spatial–temporal remotely sensed indices to determine biodiversity conservation concerns due to threats from high inter-annual climate *** We used 1040 forest soil samples（0–30 cm） to generate spatially explicit estimates of SOC native forests in Argentina at a spatial resolution of approximately 200 m. We selected 52 potential predictive environmental covari-ates, which represent key factors for the spatial distribution of SOC. All covariate maps were uploaded to the Google Earth Engine cloud-based computing platform for subsequent modelling. To determine the biodiversity threats from high inter-annual climate variability, we employed the spatial–temporal satellite-derived indices based on Enhanced Vegetation Index（EVI） and land surface temperature（LST） images from Landsat *** SOC model（0–30 cm depth） prediction accounted for 69% of the variation of this soil property across the whole native forest coverage in Argentina. Time to Progression of AFP(TPA)as a Predictor of Survival in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with Sorafenib(SOR)

Background: The standard therapy in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is sorafenib (SOR), which has the inconvenience of toxicity and discontinuation. Patient selection and the use of early markers are critical for optimizing the potential benefit of SOR. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has an established role in HCC prognosis. The objective was to evaluate whether AFP variation during SOR treatment reflects the lack of progression to SOR and can be used as a prognostic factor. Methods: AFP levels were prospectively analyzed in 114 patients to determine whether the time to progression of AFP (TPA) at 3 months had a prognostic value for survival. Results: Between July 2007 and October 2012, 114 patients were included (mean age 64 years, 97 male, 96 with cirrhosis). Etiology was alcohol 47 (41%) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) 31 (27%). According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system: A (one case), B (24 cases) and C (89 cases). The Child-Pugh was Class A in 89 cases. The general condition of the patient according to ECOG-PS was 0 in 73 cases. The median duration of treatment was 5 months (3.47 - 6.53, 95% CI). The median overall survival (OS) was 9.23 months. The standard dose was maintained in 26 patients (22.8%). Sixty-seven percent of patients experienced at least one adverse event grade 3-4. The time to progression of AFP lower or higher than 3 months was an independent prognostic factor of OS (univariate and multivariate analysis): 8.10 vs. 18.85 months, P 3 months had longer OS, and TPA was an independent prognostic factor.

Memory deficit,which is often associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue for *** till now,all potential drug candidates have failed to produce satisfa ctory ***,in the search for a solution,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial for object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of *** this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of ORM in young animals and prevent ORM deficits in rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,we found that the prevention of memory deficits was mediated through the upregulation of neuronal arbo rization and spine density,as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).A knockdown of BDNF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of neuronal structural plasticity and in the prevention of ORM *** findings suggest that BDNF-mediated neuronal structural plasticity in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of memory deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of memory deficits.

A novel semantic segmentation approach based on U-Net,WU-Net,and U-Net++deep learning for predicting areas sensitive to pluvial flood at tropical area

Floods remain one of the most devastating weather-induced disastersworldwide, resulting in numerous fatalities each year and severelyimpacting socio-economic development and the ***, the ability to predict flood-prone areas in advance is crucialfor effective risk management. The objective of this research is to assessand compare three convolutional neural networks, U-Net, WU-Net, andU-Net++, for spatial prediction of pluvial flood with a case study at atropical area in the north of Vietnam. They are relative new convolutionalgorithms developed based on U-shaped architectures. For this task, ageospatial database with 796 historical flood locations and 12 floodindicators was prepared. For training the models, the binary crossentropywas employed as the loss function, while the Adaptive momentestimation (ADAM) algorithm was used for the optimization of themodel parameters, whereas, F1-score and classification accuracy (Acc)were used to assess the performance of the models. The results unequivocally highlight the high performance of the three models,achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 96.01%. The flood susceptibility maps derived from this research possess considerable utility for local authorities, providing valuable insights and informationto enhance decision-making processes and facilitate the implementation of effective risk management strategies.

Fungal diversity and community composition responses to the reintroduction of fire in a non-managed Mediterranean shrubland ecosystem

Background It is necessary to determine the implications for managing forest stands using variable retention harvesting for maintaining carbon and for calculating the effects of different harvesting practices on above-and belowground carbon balance in forest ecosystems. In this context, forest carbon management has gained more attention among managers and policy-makers during recent years. The aim of this study was to determine carbon pool dynamics in different forest ecosystem components after variable retention harvesting(VRH) to characterize the ecological stability and quantify the recovery rate through the years-after-harvesting(YAH).Methods Carbon pool compartmentalization of 14 different components was determined in 60 harvested and primary unmanaged forests during the first 18 YAH in Tierra del Fuego(Argentina). We compared them using uni-and multi-variate methods, relativizing the outputs with primary unmanaged *** We determined the effectiveness to retain carbon components in post-harvested stands under different retention strategies(aggregated vs. dispersed). The balance among carbon pool components changed between managed and unmanaged stands across the YAH, and was directly related to the impact magnitude. Aggregated retention improved the ecological stability of the harvested areas, where the below-ground components were more stable than the above-ground components. The recovery rate was directly related to the post-harvesting natural dynamics of the stands. The studied period was not enough to fully recover the C levels of primary unmanaged forests, but VRH showed advantages to increase the C pools in the managed *** Promoting VRH can improve sustainable forestry at the landscape level and in the long term, generating positive synergies with biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services.
