Implications for the lithospheric structure of Cambay rift zone,western India:Inferences from a magnetotelluric study

broad-band and long-period magnetotelluric(MT)data were acquired along an east-west trending traverse of nearly 200 km across the Kachchh,Cambay rift basins,and Aravalli-Delhi fold belt(ADFb),western *** regional strike analysis of MT data indicated an approximate N59°E geoelectric strike direction under the traverse and it is in fair agreement with the predominant geological strike in the study *** decomposed transverse electric(TE)-and transverse magnetic(TM)-data modes were inverted using a nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm to image the electrical lithospheric structure across the Cambay rift basin and its surrounding *** studies show a thick(~1-5 km)layer of conductive Tertiary-Mesozoic sediments beneath the Kachchh and Cambay rift *** resistive blocks indicate presence of basic/ultrabasic volcanic intrusives,depleted mantle lithosphere,and different Precambrian structural *** crustal conductor delineated within the ADFb indicates the presence of fluids within the fault zones,sulfide mineralization within polyphase metamorphic rocks,and/or Aravalli-Delhi sediments/*** observed conductive anomalies beneath the Cambay rift basin indicate the presence of basaltic underplating,volatile(CO2,H2 O)enriched melts and channelization of melt fractions/fluids into crustal depths that occurred due to plume-lithosphere *** variations in electrical resistivity observed across the profile indicate that the impact of Reunion plume on lithospheric structures of the Cambay rift basin is more dominant at western continental margin of India(WCMI)and thus support the hypothesis proposed by Campbell&Griffiths about the plume-lithosphere interactions.

New Archaeological sites in the Gulf of Cambay,India

India, with a coastline of over 7,500 km, is known to have engaged in maritime trade from the second half of the rst millennium bC. Geophysical surveys conducted off the coast of bombay, laccadives, Tranquebar, Kutch, Cambay, Kaveripattinam and Visakapatnam have recorded shipwrecks, submerged cities, ports and channels. It is highly probable that the shelf off the Andhra, Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts, if properly surveyed, will yield not only vestiges of prehistoric man and his tools but also submerged river channels and ports. A preliminary survey of the Gulf of Cambay with side-scan sonar soundings and a sub-bottom proler revealed unnat- ural features. Further exploration through dredging brought to light artefacts that bore testimony to human activity.

Passive Direct methanol fuel cells(DMFC)are more suitable for charging small capacity electronic *** passive DMFC,the fuel and oxidant are supplied by diffusion and natural convection process on the anode and cathode sides *** collectors(CC)play a vital importance in fuel cell *** paper presents the combined impact of perforated and wire mesh current collectors(WMCC)on passive DMFC *** types of open ratios of perforated current collectors(PCC),such as 45.40%,55.40%and 63.40%and two types of wire mesh current collectors with open ratios of 38.70%and 45.40%were chosen for the experimental work.A combination of Taguchil9 rule is considered.A combination of three PCC and two WMCC on both anode and cathode was *** concentration was varied from 1 mol·l^(-1)-5 mol·l^(-1)for nine combinations of PCC and *** the experimental results,it is noticed that the combination of PCC and WMCC with an open ratio of 55.40%and 38.70%incorporated passive DMFC produced peak power density at 5 mol·l^(-1)of methanol *** passive DMFC performance was evaluated in terms of maximum power density and maximum current *** combined current collectors of PCC and WMCC open ratios of 55.40%+38.70%have more stable voltage than single PCC of open ratio 63.40%at 4 mol·l^(-1)of methanol concentration.

soil Enzyme Activities and Organic Matter Composition Affected by 26 Years of Continuous Cropping

The study was to determine the long-term effects of subtropical monoculture and rotational cropping systems and fertilization on soil enzyme activities and soil C, N, and P levels. Cropping systems included continuous sorghum(sorghum bicolor l.), cotton(Gossypium hirsutum l.), corn(Zea mays l.), and cotton/sorghum rotations after 26 years of treatment imposition. soil under continuous sorghum and continuous corn had 15% and 11%, respectively, greater C concentrations than soil under continuous *** C was 10% higher at 0–7.5 cm than at 7.5–15 cm. Total N followed similar trends with soil depth as organic C. Continuous sorghum had 19% higher total N than other crop species and rotations. With fertilization, continuous cotton had the highest total P at 0–7.5 cm and sorghum had the highest at 7.5–15 cm. soil total P was 14% higher at 0–7.5 than at 7.5–15 cm, and fertilization increased 15% total P compared to unfertilized soil. Arylsulfatase, alkaline phosphatase, and β-d-glucosidase activity were the highest for sorghum and the lowest for cotton. Rotation increased enzyme activities compared to continuous cotton but not for continuous sorghum. Of all crop species and rotations, continuous cotton generally showed the lowest levels of organic matter and enzyme activities after 26 years. Fertilization significantly increased the yields for all cropping systems, but rotation had no significant effect on either sorghum or cotton lint yield compared to each crop grown in monoculture. long-term cropping did not increase soil organic matter levels beyond short-term gains, indicating the difficulty in promoting C sequestration in subtropical soils.

Effect of mixed-cropping and water-stress on macro-nutrients and biochemical constituents of rhizomatous medicinal plants in Central Himalaya,India

Plants in the alpine zone mainly depend on the reserved food materials stored in their rhizomes for the next growing season. We investigated the effect of mixed cropping （Phaseolus vulgaris l. var. Pinto） with four rhizomatous medicinal plants, i.e., Angelica glauca, Arnebia benthamii, Rheum emodi and Pleurospermum angelicoides as well as three levels of water stress treatment under two conditions （shade net and open field） on macronutrients （NPK） and biochemicals （carbohydrates and protein）. The experiment was conducted by completely randomized design （CDR）. The data were analyzed with ANOVA as well as CDR. The experimental results show that in all the species shade conditions with sever water stress （ssWs） increased the level of macronutrients （NPK）. However, （N） concentration was highest under shade with mixed cropping （sMIX）. Under sMIX, carbohydrate content was highest than open field control conditions （CONT）. This investigation results demon- strate that mixed cropping of medicinal plants with Phaseolus vulgaris could be a good livelihood option in the mountainous regions of Indian Central Himalaya. And the water-stress conditions along with mixed cropping could improve the biochemical constituents in the rhizome of these species.

Ethnobotanical study towards Conservation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Upper Catchments of Dhauli Ganga in the Central Himalaya

The present study broadly focused on medicinal plant species collected from wild by the villagers for different purposes in the upper catchment of Dhauli Ganga in Nanda Devi biosphere Reserve(NDbR),in the central Himalaya.A schedule based survey was conducted during the years 2003-2005 in 15 villages of Chamoli district part of the *** was collected from collectors, vaidya(medicine man)and those dealing with domestication and marketing of the medicinal plants. The aim of the study was to understand the prioritiesed medicinal plants,their mode of collection and document their ethnobotanical uses by the bhotiya tribal communities,in this world heritage site. During the survey,50 medicinal plants belonging to 31 families and 44 genera were *** of these,70% were harvested from the wild,22% were cultivated and 8% were cultivated as well as wild *** the cultivated species,8% were found growing in the kitchen gardens and 14%in the agricultural ***,42%of the plants had their roots and rhizomes used followed by leaves (26%),seeds(10%),seed and leaf(8%),bark and whole plant(6%)and flower(1%).Most plants were reported to be used for rheumatism(16),followed by stomach disorder(14),cold and cough(11),and jaundice(9).Thirty three plants species were reported to have more than one therapeutic uses,while 17 species were reported to be used against single *** distance of villages from road head was one of the factors contributing to the decline in the medicinal plant population in their natural habitats. Effect of specimen gauge reduction on uniaxial tension properties of reinforcing steel

The standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials (AsTM E8) mandates a specimen gauge reduction for obtaining the tensile properties of reinforcing steel bars. The standard outlines the specimen preparation requirements and methods to ensure that test results well represent the material properties. On the other hand, some codes differ regarding the approach to specimen preparation. They do not apply gauging, for both deformed and plain steel bars. Thus, the effect of specimen gauge reduction on the tensile properties of reinforcing steel bars was evaluated, and the interconnection of properties to the layer hardness was analysed. The experiment governed a range of deformed hot-rolled bar sizes, tested in tension using precision instruments. The Rockwell hardness test was implemented layerwise on the specimen’s cross section, and the hardness number (HRC) was measured as a function of the layer distance to the centre. A finite element model was constructed to study the stress concentrations induced by a constant indentation, simulating the HRCs, and to numerically construct the stress–strain relationship of ungauged steel bars based on the core properties and the section HRC relationship. scanning electron microscopy readings were performed to visually and chemically justify the results. It was shown that the specimen gauge reduction significantly influenced the resulting stress–strain behaviour of the material, and the yield and ultimate strengths were reduced. It was also demonstrated that the hardness response is proportional to the distance to the specimen’s axes. The corresponding yield and ultimate strengths thus increased accordingly, from the inner to the outer layers of the bar. Testing a gauged specimen will therefore result in lower strength than that of an ungauged steel bar.

Objective:To assess the in-vitro antihacterial activity and anti-inflammatory activity of orally administered different extracts(Hydro-alcoholic,methanolic,ethyl acetate and hexane)of Rauvolfia tetraphylla(***)root bark in Carrageetiaii induced acute inflammation in ***:In-vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated for extracts against four Gram positive and four Gram negative bacteria by using cylinder plate ***-alcoholic extract(70%v/v ethanol)at 200,400 and 800 mg/kg doses and methanolic,ethyl acetate and hexane extracts at doses 100,200 and 400 mg/kg were tested for anti-inflammatory activity in Carrageenan induced rat paw oedema model and paw thickness was measured every one hour up to 6 ***:All extracts of *** root bark showed good zone of inhibition against tested bacterial *** Carrageenan induced inflammation model,hydro-alcoholic and methanolic extract of *** root bark at three different doses produced significant(Pl)reduction when compared to vehicle treated control group and hexane,ethyl acetate ***:In the present study extracts of *** root bark shows good in-vitro antibacterial activity and in-vivo anti-inflammatory activity in rats.
