AIM: To check the utility of postcibal ultrasonography for the evaluation of reflux in relation to gastric emptying in infants with recurrent respiratory symptoms and to link imaging with clinical ***: Esophageal reflux (hyperechoic retrograde filling) and gastric emptying (antral areas) were quantified before and after ingestion of a standard formula in 35 untreated infants (13 with chronic cough,22 with recurrent bronchitis) and in 31 ***: The prevalence of abnormal (≥8 episodes)postcibal refluxes was 74% in patients and 3% in controls. Number, duration of the longest episode and extent of refluxes were significantly higher in patients compared to controls. Number of refluxes was higher in patients with symptomatic refluxes than in those *** with recurrent bronchitis had more refluxes than those with chronic cough and controls. Extent and timing of gastric emptying were similar in patients and ***: Esophageal ultrasonography is a useful and physiological test in infants with recurrent respiratory diseases, which have a high prevalence of abnormal postcibal esophageal reflux and a gastric emptying similar to that of normal controls. Esophageal reflux is more severe in subjects with recurrent bronchitis than in those with chronic cough.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a chronic functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract and is one of the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal *** impact of IBS on the general population is large due to its high prevalence,suboptimal medical treatments and significant economic *** pathophysiology of IBS is complex and treatments are often *** common therapeutic approaches for IBS include education and reassurance,lifestyles(especially nutrition-based interventions),peripherally acting medications(which typically target motility),centrally actingmedications(which target visceral hypersensitivity and pain)and psychological interventions(which aim to reduce the effects of stress or symptom-specific anxiety).A beneficial dietary approach might include the following measures:a diet low in fermentable oligo-,di-and monosaccharides and polyols(FODMAPs),limitation or exclusion of gas-producing foods and/or lactose and gluten and fiber supplementation in selected *** therapeutic agents,namely nutraceutics,are also an interesting option in the management of IBS *** paper will focus on available dietary interventions for IBS and will review the evidence for nutrition-based therapies.

Microtubule Depolymerization Affects Endocytosis and Exocytosis in the Tip and Influences Endosome Movement in Tobacco Pollen Tubes

Polarized organization of the cytoplasm of growing pollen tubes is maintained by coordinated function of actin filaments （AFs） and microtubules （MTs）. AFs convey post-Golgi secretory vesicles to the tip where some fuse with specific domains of the plasma membrane （PM）. Secretory activity is balanced by PM retrieval that maintains cell mem- brane economy and regulates the polarized composition of the PM, by dividing lipids/proteins between the shank and the tip. Although AFs play a key role in PM internalization in the shank, the role of MTs in exo-endocytosis needs to be characterized. The present results show that integrity of the MT cytoskeleton is necessary to control exo-endocytosis events in the tip. MT polymerization plays a role in promoting PM invagination in the apex of tobacco pollen tubes since nocodazole affected PM internalization in the tip and subsequent migration of endocytic vesicles from the apex for degradation. MT depolymerization in the apex and shank was associated with misallocation of a significantly greater amount of internalized PM to the Golgi apparatus and its early recycling to the secretory pathway. Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching （FRAP） experiments also showed that MT depolymerization in the tip region influenced the rate of exocytosis in the central domain of the apical PM.

AIM:To evaluate the main factors associated with mortality in patients undergoing surgery for perforated peptic ulcer referred to an academic department of general surgery in a large southern Italian city. METHODS:One hundred and forty-nine consecutive patients (M:F ratio=110:39,mean age 52 yrs,range 16-95) with peptic ulcer disease were investigated for clinical history (including age,sex,previous history of peptic ulcer,associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,ulcer site,operation type,shock on admission,postoperative general complications, and intra-abdominal and/or wound infections),serum analyses and radiological findings. Mussels close their shell as a protective strategy and the quantification of this behavioral marker may represent an alarm signal when they are exposed to environmental *** the present study,we investigated the ability of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to recover and then the resilience or inertia of valve activity after a pulsing exposition to diverse levels of salinity(5,10,20,and 35 PSU as reference value).The trial simulated an event of drastic and sudden reduction of seawater salinity thus mimicking an event of flash flood from intense *** gaping and movements were measured in continuous cycle for 10 days using a customized magnetoelectric device which uses Hall *** showed that under normal conditions of salinity(35 PSU),the general pattern of valve movements was a continuously open state with sporadic spikes indicating a closing *** salinity of 5,PSU mussels reacted by closing their valves,leading to a 77%mortality on the 4th *** salinity of 10,PSU animals were observed with closed valves for the entire duration of the exposure and no mortality occurred,they showed a significant reduction in the valve activity once the reference value of salinity was *** contrast,salinity of 20 PSU did not trigger a significant behavioral ***,there no define rhythms of valve movements were recorded during salinity challenges.
