Introduction:Sagebrush ecosystems in western North America are being replaced by the invasion of annual grasses,particularly bromus *** experimental situations and in localized landscapes,prior studies have documented that biological soil crusts(biocrusts)can reduce annual grass presence and that biocrusts are highly vulnerable to physical *** conservation would benefit from verification of these patterms at scales that matter to local *** study tests if these patterns appear at a regional ***:A previously collected data set of vegetation provided sampling of biocrust cover across the Great basin within the state of Nevada,USA Data were analyzed with non-par ametric methods including odds ratios and generalized aditive models(GAm).Results:From a data set of 608 vegetation plots within the Great basin ecoregion,proportion of plots with high annual grass cover differed between sites with high versus low biocrust cover(p=0.0015).A negative relationship between annual grass cover and biocrust cover was confirmed with GAm(p=0.009).For a model of biocrust cover,cattle disturbance was found to be an explanatory variable(pbiocrusts,and low cover of biocrusts corresponding to high cover of annual grasses.

Although they are the largest taxonomic group of animals, relatively few insects have been examined for symbiotic relationships with micro-organisms. However, this is rapidly changing because of the potential for examination of the natural insectmicrobe-lignocellulose interactions to provide insights for biofuel technology. micro-organisms associated with lignocellulose-consuming insects often facilitate the digestion of the recalcitrant plant diet; therefore these microbial communities may be mined for novel lignocellulose-degrading microbes, or for robust and inexpensive biocatalysts necessary for economically feasible biofuel production from lignocellulose. These insect-microbe interactions are influenced by the ecosystem and specific lignocellulose diet, and appre- ciating the whole ecosystem-insect-microbiota-lignocellulose as a natural biorefinery provides a rich and diverse framework from which to design novel industrial processes. One such natural biorefinery, the Tipula abdominalis larvae in riparian ecosystems, is reviewed herein with applications for biochemical processes and overcoming challenges involved in conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuel ethanol. From the dense and diverse T. abdominalis larval hindgut microbial community, a cellulolytic bacterial isolate, 27C64, demonstrated enzymatic activity toward many model plant polymers and also produced a bacterial antibiotic. 27C64 was co-cultured with yeast in fermentation of pine to ethanol, which allowed for a 20% reduction of commercial enzyme. In this study, a micro-organism from a lignocellulose-consuming insect was successfully applied for improvement of biomass-to-biofuel technology.

Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector(VISAR) [barker and Hollenbach, J. Appl. Phys. 43, 4669(1972)]is a well-known diagnostic that is employed on many shock physics and pulsed-power experiments. With the VISAR diagnostic, the velocity on the surface of any metal flyer can be found. For most experiments employing VISAR, either a kinetic pressure [Grady, mech. mater. 29, 181(1998)] or a magnetic pressure [Lemke et al., Intl J. Impact Eng. 38,480(2011)] drives the motion of the flyer. moreover, reliable prediction of the time-dependent pressure is often a critical component to understanding the physics of these experiments. Although VISAR can provide a precise measurement of a flyer's surface velocity, the real challenge of this diagnostic implementation is using this velocity to unfold the timedependent pressure. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate a new method for quickly and reliably unfolding VISAR data.

Results of the two-dimensionally reconstructed distribution of soft X-ray emission in HL-2A and electromagnetic radiation in large helical device （LHD） are presented. Hardware improvements of in-vessel soft X-ray cameras and the development of tomographic software have made detailed and visual studies of soft X-ray emission possible in HL-2A. Several algorithms are employed in order to get as detail as possible in the images while keeping the guiding assumptions to a minimum. Recently success has been achieved in applying a 2D peeling away algorithm for tomographic reconstruction of LHD bolometric data jointly under the China-Japan collaboration. The data analysed so far have been used to study magnetohydrodynamic （mHD） instabilities on HL-2A tokamak and radiation losses on LHD.

FOR Witten invariants, there have been many studies (see refs. [1—9]). Numerical computer calculation of some Witten invariants τ_r (m) of several three-manifolds was done by Freed andGrompf and Neil. In this note, we calculate _p(m, A) by computer for all manifolds obtained by integral surgeries on a left trefoil knot, up to p≤13. The notations here are standard (see references [3, 6, 9]).

Anthropogenic pollutants have the potential to disrupt reproductive strategies. Little is known about how lead （Pb2＋） exposure disrupts individual-level responses in reproductive behaviors, which are important for fitness. Drosophila melanogaster was used as a model system to deter- mine the effects of： 1） developmental lead exposure on pre-mating reproductive behaviors （i.e., mate preference）, and 2） lead exposure and mating preferences on fitness in the F0 parental generation and F1 un-exposed offspring. Wild-type strains of D. melanogaster were reared from egg stage to adulthood in control or leaded medium （250 μm PbAc） and tested for differences in： mate preference, male song performance, sex pheromone expression, fecundity, mortality, and body weight. F0 leaded females preferentially mated with leaded males （i.e., asymmetrical positive assortative mating） in 2-choice tests. This positive assortative mating was mediated by the females （and not the males） and was dependent upon context and developmental exposure to Pb. Neither the courtship song nor the sex pheromone profile expressed by control and leaded males medi- ated the positive assortative mating in leaded females. Leaded females did not incur a fitness cost in terms of reduced fecundity, increased mortality, or decreased body weight by mating with leaded males. These results suggest that sublethal exposure to lead during development can alter mate preferences in adults, but not fitness measures once lead exposure has been removed. We suggest that changes in mate preference may induce fitness costs, as well as long-term population and multi-generational implications, if pollution is persistent in the environment.

In this paper,we propose a new approach to tackle the separability problem for bipartite qudit *** is based on the majorana representation which allows to represent a N-spinors(qudit)as a symmetric state of N spin-1/*** also discuss how we can exploit such representation and the notion of the biseparability of multipartite qubit states in the sense to establish new criteria of the separability problem based on the PPT and concurrence.
