AIm： To investigate simultaneously UGT1A7, UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK and CFTR genes to verify whether genetic polymorphisms predispose to the development of pancreatic cancer （PC）.mETHODS： Genomic DNA of 61 pancreatic cancer patients and 105 healthy controls （HC） were analyzed. UGT1A7 genotyping was determined by PCR-RFLP analysis. Specific PCR and sequencing were used to analyze genetic variants of UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK1 and CFTR genes.RESULTS： Four different alleles （^＊1：WT; ＂2： N129K and R131K; ＂3： N129K, R131K, and W208R; and ＂4： W208R） in UGT1A7 and three different alleles （^＊1：WT;^＊4： Y242X; and ^＊5： D256N） in UGT1A9 were detected. All UGT1A polymorphisms were observed at similar frequency in PC patients and HC. Seven different alleles in ARP were found in PC patients and HC at similar frequency. The SPINK1 mutations N34S and P55S occurred in five PC patients with a prevalence （4.1%） not significantly different from that observed （2.0%） in HC. The only CFTR AFS08 mutation was recognized in three PC patients with a prevalence （4.9%） similar to HC.CONCLUSION： UGT1A7, UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK1 and CFTR gene polymorphisms are not associated with PC in Italian patients.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. While surgical resection remains the only curative option, more than 80% of patients present with unresectable disease. Unfortunately, even among those who undergo resection, the reported median survival is 15-23 mo, with a 5-year survival of approximately 20%. Disappointingly, over the past several decades, despite improvements in diagnostic imaging, surgical technique and chemotherapeutic options, only modest improvements in survival have been realized. Nevertheless, it remains clear that surgical resection is a prerequisite for achieving longterm survival and cure. There is now emerging consensus that a subgroup of patients, previously considered poor candidates for resection because of the relationship of their primary tumor to surrounding vasculature, may benefit from resection, particularly when preceded by neoadjuvant therapy. This stage of disease, termed borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, has become of increasing interest and is now the focus of a multiinstitutional clinical trial. Here we outline the history, progress, current treatment recommendations, and future directions for research in borderline resectable pancreatic cancer.

Aims The Inclusive Niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf C and N concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** Findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is a heterogeneous and complex disease that is imprecisely diagnosed by liver *** covers a spectrum that ranges from simple steatosis,nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)with varying degrees of fibrosis,to cirrhosis,which is a major risk factor for hepatocellular *** and eating habit changes during the last century have made NAFLD the most common liver disease linked to obesity,type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia,with a global prevalence of 25%.NAFLD arises when the uptake of fatty acids(FA)and triglycerides(TG)from circulation and de novo lipogenesis saturate the rate of FAβ-oxidation and verylow density lipoprotein(VLDL)-TG *** lipid metabolism is also associated with NAFLD progression from steatosis to NASH,and therefore,alterations in liver and serum lipidomic signatures are good indicators of the disease’s development and *** review focuses on the importance of the classification of NAFLD patients into different subtypes,corresponding to the main alteration(s)in the major pathways that regulate FA homeostasis leading,in each case,to the initiation and progression of *** concept also supports the targeted intervention as a key approach to maximize therapeutic efficacy and opens the door to the development of precise NASH treatments.

Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are heterogeneous nano-sized vesicles of endocytic origin shed into blood and other body fluids such as urine,saliva,seminal fluid,ascites,amniotic liquid,synovial fluid,breast milk and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)by quite all cell *** actively contribute to intercellular communication as they carry bioactive molecules that are selectively incorporated by the originating cell and are delivered to recipient cells over long and short distances(Simons and Raposo,2009).EVs can be divided into three main groups according to their size and cellular origin:1)exosomes(40–120 nm),that have an endocytic origin and are formed by inward budding of the limiting membrane of multivescicular bodies,which fuse with the plasma membrane and release exosomes into the extracellular space;2)microvesicles(50–1000 nm),budding directly off the plasma membrane;3)apoptotic bodies(>1000 nm),which are released during *** originating via distinct processes,different subtypes of EVs carry different proteins within their membrane and luminal compartments that reflect the phenotype of the tissue of origin.

Bottled water consumption is increasing worldwide, despite its huge economic and environmental cost. We aim to describe personal and tap water quality determinants of bottled water use in the city of Barcelona. This cross-sectional study used data from the Health Survey of Barcelona in 2006（N = 5417 adults）. The use of bottled water to drink and to cook was evaluated in relation to age, gender, educational level, district and levels of trihalomethanes（THms）, free chlorine, conductivity, chloride, sodium, p H, nitrate and aluminium in municipal tap water using Robust Poisson Regression. The prevalence of bottled water use to drink and cook was 53.9% and 6.7%, respectively. Chemical parameters in water had a large variability（interquartile range of THms concentrations： 83.2–200.8 μg/L）and were correlated between them, except aluminium. Drinking bottled water increased with educational level, while cooking with bottled water was higher among men than among women and decreased with age. After adjusting by these personal determinants, a dose–response relationship was found between concentrations of all chemicals except aluminium in tap water and bottled water use. The highest association was found for THms,with a Prevalence Ratio of 2.00（95%CI = 1.86, 2.15） for drinking bottled water and 2.80（95%CI = 1.72, 4.58） for cooking with bottled water, among those with 〉 150 μg/L vs. 〈 100 μg/L THms in tap water. Conclusion： more than half of Barcelona residents regularly drank bottled water, and the main determinant was the chemical composition of tap water,particularly THm level.
