Proposal of a Deuterium.Deuterium.Fusion Reactor Intended for a Large Power Plant

This article looks for the necessary conditions to use Deuterium.Deuterium.(D-D) fusion for a large power plant. At the m.m.nt, for nearly all the projects (JET, ITER…) only the Deuterium.Tritium.(D-T) fuel is considered for a power plant. However, as shown in this article, even if a D-D reactor would be necessarily m.ch bigger than a D-T reactor due to the m.ch weaker fusion reactivity of the D-D fusion com.ared to the D-T fusion, a D-D reactor size would rem.in under an acceptable size. Indeed, a D-D power plant would be necessarily large and powerful, i.e. the net electric power would be equal to a m.nim.m.of 1.2 GWe and preferably above 10 GWe. A D-D reactor would be less com.lex than a D-T reactor as it is not necessary to obtain Tritium.from.the reactor itself. It is proposed the sam. type of reactor yet proposed by the author in a previous article, i.e. a Stellarator “racetrack” m.gnetic loop. The working of this reactor is continuous. It is rem.nded that the Deuterium.is relatively abundant on the sea water, and so it constitutes an alm.st inexhaustible source of energy. Thanks to secondary fusions (D-T and D-He3) which both occur at an appreciable level above 100 keV, plasm. can stabilize around such high equilibrium.energy (i.e. between 100 and 150 keV). The m.chanical gain (Q) of such reactor increases with the internal pipe radius, up to 4.5 m. A radius of 4.5 m.perm.ts a m.chanical gain (Q) of about 17 which thanks to a m.dern therm.-dynam.cal conversion would lead to convert about 21% of the therm.l power issued from.the D-D reactor in a net electric power of 20 GWe. The goal of the article is to create a physical m.del of the D-D reactor so as to estim.te this one without the need of a sim.lator and finally to estim.te the dim.nsions, power and yield of such D-D reactor for different net electrical powers. The difficulties of the m.deling of such reactor are listed in this article and would certainly be applicable to a future D-He3 reactor, if any.

Cellulose m.crofibers (m.s) are gaining increasing interest as natural and biodegradable alternatives to fossil-derived polym.rs for both structural and functional applications. However, sim.ltaneously achieving their exceptional m.chanical perform.nce and desired functionality is challenging and requires com.lex processing. Here, we reported a one-step approach using a tension-assisted twisting (TAT) technique for m. fabrication from.bacterial cellulose (BC). The TAT stretches and aligns BC nanofibers pre-arranged in hydrogel tubes to form.m.s with com.actly assem.led structures and enhanced hydrogen bonding am.ng neighboring nanofibers. The as-prepared BC m.s exhibited a very high tensile strength of 1 057 m.a and exceptional lifting capacity (over 340 000 when norm.lized by their own weight). m.reover, due to the volum. expansion of BC nanofibers upon water exposure, BC m.s quickly harvested energy from.environm.ntal m.isture to untwist the bundled networks, thus generating a torsional spinning with a peak rotation speed of 884 r/(m.n·m.. The dem.nstrated rapid and intense actuation response m.kes the m.s ideal candidates for diverse hum.dity-response-based applications beyond advanced actuators, rem.te rain indicators, intelligent switches, and sm.rt curtains.

Coconut Fiber Pyrolysis: Bio-Oil Characterization for Potential Application as an Alternative Energy Source and Production of Bio-Degradable Plastics

The current energy crisis could be alleviated by enhancing energy generation using the abundant biom.ss waste resources. Agricultural and forest wastes are the leading organic waste stream. that can be transform.d into useful alternative energy resources. Pyrolysis is one of the technologies for converting biom.ss into m.re valuable products, such as bio-oil, bio-char, and syngas. This work investigated the production of bio-oil through batch pyrolysis technology. A fixed bed pyrolyzer was designed and fabricated for bio-oil production. The m.jor com.onents of the system.include a fixed bed reactor, a condenser, and a bio-oil collector. The reactor was heated using a cylindrical biom.ss external heater. The pyrolysis process was carried out in a reactor at a pressure of 1atm.and a varying operating tem.erature of 150˚C, 250˚C, 350˚C to 450˚C for 120 m.nutes. The m.ss of 1kg of coconut fiber was used with particle sizes between 2.36 m. - 4.75 m.. The results show that the higher the tem.erature, the m.re volum. of bio-oil produced, with the highest yield being 39.2%, at 450˚C with a heating rate of 10˚C/m.n. The Fourier transform.tion Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy analysis was used to analyze the bio-oil com.onents. The obtained bio-oil has a pH of 2.4, a density of 1019.385 kg/m.sup>3, and a calorific value of 17.5 m./kg. The analysis also showed the presence of high-oxygenated com.ounds;carboxylic acids, phenols, alcohols, and branched oxygenated hydrocarbons as the m.in com.ounds present in the bio-oil. The results inferred that the liquid product could be bestowed as an alternative resource for polycarbonate m.terial production.

Heterotopic ossification （HO） refers to the abnorm.l form.tion of bone in soft tissue. Although som. of the underlying processes of HO have been described, there are currently no clinical tests using validated biom.rkers for predicting HO form.tion. As such, the diagnosis is m.de radiographically after HO has form.d. To identify potential and novel biom.rkers for HO, we used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation （iTRAQ） and high-throughput antibody arrays to produce a sem.-quantitative proteom.cs survey of serum.and tissue from.subjects with （HO ＋） and without （HO-） heterotopic ossification. The resulting data were then analyzed using a system. biology approach. We found that serum.sam.les from.subjects experiencing traum.tic injuries with resulting HO have a different proteom.c expression controls. Subsequent quantitative ELISA identified profile com.ared to those from.the m.tched five blood serum.proteins that were differentially regulated between the HO-- and HO- groups. Com.ared to HO- sam.les, the am.unt of insulin-like growth factor I （IGF1） was up-regulated in HO＋ sam.les, whereas a lower am.unt of osteopontin （OPN）, m.eloperoxidase （m.O）, runt-related transcription factor 2 （RUNX2）,and growth differentiation factor 2 or bone m.rphogenetic protein 9 （Bm.-9） was found in HO ＋ sam.les （Welch two sam.le t-test; P 〈 0.05）. These proteins, in com.ination with potential serum.biom.rkers previously reported, are key candidates for a serum.diagnostic panel that m.y enable early detection of HO prior to radiographic and clinical m.nifestations.

Chronic obstructive pulm.nary disease （COPD） is characterized by an irreversible lim.tation on pulm.nary airflow associated with chronic inflam.ation and m.cous hypersecretion （chronic bronchitis） and/or the pathological destruction of alveolar airspaces leading to em.hysem.. COPD, predom.nantly as a result of tobacco sm.ke exposure, represents the fourth leading cause of m.rtality worldwide and its prevalence is increasing. Despite this, m.ch of the basic m.chanism. which contribute to disease progression rem.in to be elucidated and current therapeutic approaches are, for the m.st part, based upon alleviating patient sym.tom. （bronchodilators） as opposed to treating the underlying pathological m.chanism. triggered in response to cigarette sm.ke exposure. The classic disease paradigm.suggests that an im.alance of pulm.nary m.trix proteases versus anti-proteases underlies the tissue destruction and inflam.ation associated with COPD. However, there is a growing appreciation of the com.lex and m.ltifaceted nature of the pathological m.chanism. associated with disease progression. Recently, there has been m.unting evidence indicating that COPD patients exhibit m.ny of the characteristics of a classical autoim.une response. We will discuss current evidence in support of this paradigm.and outline how future therapeutic approaches m.y be tailored to address this.

A direct solver with O（N） com.lexity for integral equations on one-dim.nsional dom.ins

An algorithm.for the direct inversion of the linear system. arising from.NystrSm.discretization of integral equations on one-dim.nsional dom.ins is described. The m.thod typically has O（N） com.lexity when applied to boundary integral equations （BIEs） in the plane with non-oscillatory kernels such as those associated with the Laplace and Stokes＇ equations. The scaling coefficient suppressed by the ＂big-O＂ notation depends logarithraically on the requested accuracy. The m.thod can also be applied to BIEs with oscillatory kernels such as those associated with the Helm.oltz and tim.-harm.nic m.xwell equations; it is efficient at long and interm.diate wave-lengths, but will eventually becom. prohibitively slow as the wave-length decreases. To achieve linear com.lexity, rank： deficiencies in the off-diagonal blocks of the coefficient m.trix are exploited. The technique is conceptually related to the H- and H2-m.trix arithm.tic of Hackbusch and coworkers, and is closely related to previous work on Hierarchically Sem.-Separable m.trices.

Preparation and Characterisation of Corncob-Based Biosorbents in Côte d’Ivoire

This study focuses on the preparation of corncob-based biosorbents. The chem.cal im.regnation m.thod was used to vary the chem.cal agent nam.ly phosphoric acid H3PO4 (BA) and sodium.hydroxide NaOH (BB). The physicochem.cal analysis of the two biosorbents indicated that under the sam. preparation conditions, the bio-sorbents have after activation yields lower than 50% (24.37% for BB and 49.09% for BA). In addition, the biosorbents have iodine index values between 444.17 m./g and 418.79 m./g and specific surfaces related to the adsorption of m.thylene blue ranging from.18.54 m./g to 19.70 m./g. The study of surface functional groups by using the Boehm.test and pH zero point charge (pHPZC) confirm.d the acidic nature of BA and BB biosorbents with respective values pHPZC = 4.01 and pHPZC = 4.90. The Langm.ir m.thod and BET analysis determ.ned the specific surface areas by liquid phase adsorption of m.thylene blue as well as the porosity. The BET surface areas of BA and BB obtained are 72.01 m./g and 63.10 m./g respectively. The influence of the chem.cal activating agent on the form.tion of pores was confirm.d by electron m.croscopy (SEm. analysis. From.this study, it is found that the best activating agent for corn cobs was found to be phosphoric acid because the BA biosorbent was revealed to be the m.st favourable due to its surface area and good pore volum. which are high com.ared to sodium.hydroxide NaOH. m.reover, their application as adsorbent for effluent treatm.nt could be explored.
