Background:To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cabazitaxel in castration-resistant prostate cancer patients aged>80 years,we performed a retrospective study on a sample of patients from 11 Italian cancer *** and methods:Fifty-seven patients aged>80 years were treated with cabazitaxel after previous failure with docetaxel;39 completed a comprehensive geriatric assessment questionnaire(34 fit and 5 vulnerable)and 8 patients(14%)had an eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(PS)>2,while most had a PS of 0-1(86%).Cabazitaxel was administered at a dose of 25 mg/m^(2)in 30(52%)patients and 20 mg/m^(2)or adapted schedules in 27(48%)*** schedules were adopted mainly in patients>85 years(75%),with a PS>2(87.5%),and those classified as vulnerable(100%).Results:The duration of treatment was 4.8 months and was comparable in all subgroups;disease control rate was reported in 36 patients(63%);prostate-specific antigen response was recorded in 18 patients(31.5%).Median overall survival was 13.1 months regardless of age(85 years),but overall survival was reduced in vulnerable(7.2 months)and PS>2 patients(6.8 months).The most frequently documented grade 3-4 toxicities were neutropenia(14%)and diarrhea(10.5%).Six patients(10.5%)dropped out due to severe ***:Octogenarian patients can be treated with cabazitaxel with reduced doses or alternative schedules that are associated with less toxicity and fewer treatment *** geriatric assessment could facilitate more appropriate patient selection.

The study of leaves and their architecture evolution is important for understanding the fluid dynamics of water movement in /eaves. Recent studies have shown how these systems can be involved in the performance of physiological aspects, which are directly connected with the density of the vascular network and stomata per unit of surface area. The vein architecture, beyond being essential for a mechanical support of the leaf, can also play a crucial role in the efficiency of the photosynthesis. The aim of the present work was to highlight the possible role of leaves vein network as cooling system. The results support the hypothesis that the vascular system of grape leaves is correlated with leaf temperature.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents one of the leading causes of tumor-related deaths worldwide. Among the various tools at physicians’ disposal for the diagnostic management of the disease, tomographic imaging (e.g., CT, MRI, and hybrid PeT imaging) is considered essential. The qualitative and subjective evaluation of tomographic images is the main approach used to obtain valuable clinical information, although this strategy suffers from both intrinsic and operator-dependent limitations. More recently, advanced imaging techniques have been developed with the aim of overcoming these issues. Such techniques, such as diffusion-weighted MRI and perfusion imaging, were designed for the “in vivo” evaluation of specific biological tissue features in order to describe them in terms of quantitative parameters, which could answer questions difficult to address with conventional imaging alone (e.g., questions related to tissue characterization and prognosis). Furthermore, it has been observed that a large amount of numerical and statistical information is buried inside tomographic images, resulting in their invisibility during conventional assessment. This information can be extracted and represented in terms of quantitative parameters through different processes (e.g., texture analysis). Numerous researchers have focused their work on the significance of these quantitative imaging parameters for the management of CRC patients. In this review, we aimed to focus on evidence reported in the academic literature regarding the application of parametric imaging to the diagnosis, staging and prognosis of CRC while discussing future perspectives and present limitations. While the transition from purely anatomical to quantitative tomographic imaging appears achievable for CRC diagnostics, some essential milestones, such as scanning and analysis standardization and the definition of robust cut-off values, must be achieved before quantitative tomographic imaging can be incorporated into

Critical relative indentation depth in carbon based thin films

The thin film hardness estimation by nanoindentation is influenced by substrate beyond a critical relative indentation depth(CRID). In this study we developed a methodology to identify the CRID in amorphous carbon film. Three types of amorphous carbon film deposited on silicon have been studied. The nanoindentation tests were carried out applying a 0.1–10 mN load range on a Berkovich diamond tip, leading to penetration depth-to-film thickness ratios of 8–100%. The work regained during unloading(We) and the work performed during loading(Wt) was estimated for each indentation. The trend of unload-to-load ratio(We/Wt) data as a function of depth has been studied. We/Wtdepth profiles showed a sigmoid trend and the data were fitted by means of a Hill sigmoid equation. Using Hill sigmoid fit and a simple analytical method it is possible to estimate CRID of carbon based films.

Two homologous plastocyanin isoforms are encoded by the genes PeTe1 and PeTe2 in the nuclear genome of Arabidopsis thaliana. The PeTe2 transcript is expressed at considerably higher levels and the PeTe2 protein is the more abundant isoform. Null mutations in the PeTe genes resulted in plants, designated pete1 and pete2, with decreased plastocyanin contents. However, despite reducing plastocyanin levels by over -90%, a pete2 null mutation on its own affects rates of photosynthesis and growth only slightly, whereas pete1 knockout plants, with about 60-80% of the wild-type plastocyanin level, did not show any alteration. Hence, plastocyanin concentration is not limiting for photosynthetic elec- tron flow under optimal growth conditions, perhaps implying other possible physiological roles for the protein. Indeed, plastocyanin has been proposed previously to cooperate with cytochrome C6A （Cyt C6A） in thylakoid redox reactions, but we find no evidence for a physical interaction between the two proteins, using interaction assays in yeast. We observed homodimerization of Cyt C6A in yeast interaction assays, but also Cyt C6A homodimers failed to interact with plastocyanin. Moreover, phenotypic analysis of atc6-1 pete1 and atc6-1 pete2 double mutants, each lacking Cyt C6A and one of the two piastocyanin-encoding genes, failed to reveal any genetic interaction. Overexpression of either PeTe1 or PeTe2 in the pete1 pete2 double knockout mutant background results in essentially wild-type photosynthetic performance, excluding the possibility that the two plastocyanin isoforms could have distinct functions in thylakoid electron flow.
