Comparative study on corrosion behavior of plasma sprayed Al_2O_3, ZrO_2, Al_2O_3/ZrO_2 and ZrO_2/Al_2O_3 coatings

ZrO2, Al2O3, ZrO2/Al2O3 and Al2O3/ZrO2 coatings were fabricated on low carbon steel using atmospheric plasma spraying technique. The microstructure and phase composition of the as-sprayed coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and X-ray diffraction （XRD）, respectively. The polarization test, salt spray test and immersion test were used to investigate the corrosion behavior of the coatings in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results suggested that the bilayered Al2O3/ZrO2 coating exhibits superior corrosion resistance when compared with the other coatings. This is ascribed to the presence of very few interconnected pores and stable phases in the coating.

Myeloid cells,such as neutrophils,are produced in the bone marrow in high quantities and are important in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension(pH).Although neutrophil recruitment into sites of inflammation has been well studied,the mechanisms of neutrophil egress from the bone marrow are not well *** computational flow cytometry,we observed increased neutrophils in the lungs of patients and mice with ***,we found elevated levels of IL-6 in the blood and lungs of patients and mice with *** observed that transgenic mice overexpressing Il-6 in the lungs displayed elevated neutrophil egress from the bone marrow and exaggerated neutrophil recruitment to the lungs,resulting in exacerbated pulmonary vascular remodeling,and dysfunctional ***,we found that IL-6-induced neutrophil egress from the bone marrow was dependent on interferon regulatory factor 4(IRF-4)-mediated CX3CR1 expression in ***,Cx3cr1 genetic deficiency in hematopoietic cells in Il-6-transgenic mice significantly reduced neutrophil egress from bone marrow and decreased neutrophil counts in the lungs,thus ameliorating pulmonary remodeling and *** summary,these findings define a novel mechanism of IL-6-induced neutrophil egress from the bone marrow and reveal a new therapeutic target to curtail neutrophil-mediated inflammation in pulmonary vascular disease.

Starch based nanofibrous scaffolds for wound healing applications

Starch is an attractive polymer for wound healing applications because of its wide availability,low cost,biocompatibility,biodegradability and wound-healing ***,we have fabricated starch-based nanofibrous scaffolds by electrospinning for wound healing *** diameter of the optimized nanofibers was determined by field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM)and was found to be in the range of 110e300 *** mechanical strength(0.5e0.8 Mpa)of the nanofibrous scaffolds was attuned using polyvinyl alcohol(plasticizer)and glutaraldehyde(crosslinking agent),to impart them with sufficient durability for skin tissue *** of negative interactions between the polymers was confirmed by Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR),differential scanning microscopy(DSC)and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).Cellular assays with L929 mouse fibroblast cells indicated the ability of the scaffolds to promote cellular proliferation,without exhibiting any toxic effect to the ***,the nanofibrous scaffolds demonstrated potential for wound healing applications.

particles dispersion on fluid-liquid interfaces

This paper is concerned with the dispersion of particles on the fluid-liquid interface. In a previous study we have shown that when small particles, e.g., flour, pollen, glass beads, etc., contact an air-liquid interface, they disperse rapidly as if they were in an explosion. The rapid dispersion is due to the fact that the capillary force pulls particles into the interface causing them to accelerate to a large velocity. In this paper we show that motion of particles normal to the interface is inertia dominated; they oscillate vertically about their equilibrium position before coming to rest under viscous drag. This vertical motion of a particle causes a radially-outward lateral （secondary） flow on the interface that causes nearby particles to move away. The dispersion on a liquid-liquid interface, which is the primary focus of this study, was relatively weaker than on an air-liquid interface, and occurred over a longer period of time. When falling through an upper liquid the particles have a slower velocity than when falling through air because the liquid has a greater viscosity. Another difference for the liquid-liquid interface is that the separation of particles begins in the upper liquid before the particles reach the interface. The rate of dispersion depended on the size of the particles, the densities of the particle and liquids, the viscosities of the liquids involved, and the contact angle. For small particles, partial pinning and hysteresis of the three-phase contact line on the surface of the particle during adsorption on liquid-liquid interfaces was also important. The frequency of oscillation of particles about their floating equilibrium increased with decreasing particle size on both air-water and liquid-liquid interfaces, and the time to reach equilibrium decreased with decreasing particle size. These results are in agreement with our analysis.

polarization Analysis of an Asymmetrically Etched Rib Waveguide Coupler for Sensing Applications

Deeply etched rib waveguides on silicon on insulator platform were not addressed well in research publications. We have analyzed single mode condition and polarization independence of a deeply etched rib waveguide （DE-RW） structure from biosensing perspective. With this rib structure, an asymmetrically etched integrated optic directional coupler has been numerically modeled to have the same coupling length for quasi- TE and TM modes. The coupling coefficients with the glucose solution as an upper cladding were calculated using a full vector mode solver, and the bulk refractive index sensitivity of the sensor was found as 28.305 × 10^-2/RIU for a fundamental quasi-TE mode.

Chemical vapor deposition has been the most-promising approach for growing large-area high-quality graphene films on planar substrates. Beyond the lateral growth, the synthesis of three-dimensional （3D） graphene has also been demon- strated recently on metal foams and insulating nanoparticles for exploring their applications in electrochemical electrodes. However, the existing approaches need either to prefabricate abundant starting substrates, or to construct porous frameworks for graphene growth. Herein, we report a straightforward, bioinspired strategy for growing large-quantity graphene flakes on cuttlebone substrates using the chemical vapor deposition （CVD） method. The separated graphene flakes from growth substrates are highly crystalline and layer-thickness controllable, outperforming the traditional chemically exfoliated graphene with few surface groups. Due to their inheriting the biomineral-derived morphology, the 3D graphene microstructures show a highly exposed and curved surface, which can load more MoSx（x ≥ 2） catalysts than other planar supports for highly efficient hydrogen generation. Briefly, the bioinspired approach is expected to achieve a reasonable balance between quality and quantity for graphene production, thus propelling its wide applications in energy storage and conversion devices.
