Xenoesterogens and male infertility:myth or reality?

Aim: To evaluate the role of polychlorinated biphenyls (pCBs) as a potential environmental hazard in the deteriora-tion of male fertility. Methods: Fifty-three males were studied. After a thorough case history evaluation and rele-vant clinical and laboratory investigations, pCBs were estimated in the seminal plasma of 21 infertile men with 'Unex-plained Male Factor' and 32 fertile controls. peak retention times of the eluants were compared with those of the com-mercially available standard pCB Mix, and the results confirmed spectrophotometrically. Seminal pCB concentrafonswere compared between i) fertile and infertile men and ii) men from different areas and diets. The relationship betweenpCB concentrations and measures of sperm quality such as the total motile sperm count, was assessed. results:pCBs were detected in seminal plasma of infertile men but absent from controls. Sperm quantity and quality were sig-nificantly lower in infertile men compared to controls. The highest average pCB concentrations were found in fish-eat-ing urban dwellers, and followed in succession by fish-eating rural dwellers, non fish-eating urban dwellers and nonfish-eating mral dwellers. The total motile sperm counts were inversely proportional to the pCB concentrations and weresignificantly lower than those of the respective controls. Conclusion: pCBs may be instrumental in the deteriorationof sperm quantity and quality, a contaminated fish diet being the main source of exposure.(Asian J Androl 2000 Dec; 2: 263-269 )

Field efficacy of insect pathogen, botanical, and jasmonic acid for the management of wheat midge Sitodiplosis mosellana and the impact on adult parasitoid Macroglenes penetrans populations in spring wheat

The wheat midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana, is a serious pest of wheat worldwide. In North America, management of S. mosellana in spring wheat relies on the timely application of pesticides, based on midge adults levels caught in pheromone traps or seen via field scouting during wheat heading. In this context, biopesticides can be an effective alternative to pesticides for controlling S. mosellana within an Integrated pest Management program. A field study using insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana GHA, nematode Steinernema Jeltiae with Barricade polymer gel 1%, pyrethrin, combined formulations of B. bassiana GHA and pyrethrin, Jasmonic acid (JA) and chlorpyrifos (chemical check) was performed to determine to which extent they affect midge larval populations, kernel damage levels, grain yield, and quality, and the impacts on adult parasitoid Macroglenes penetrans populations. The results indicated that biopesticides JA and S. Jeltiae were the most effective in reducing larval populations and kernel damage levels, and produced a higher spring wheat yield when compared to the water control at both study locations (East Valier and North Valier, Montana, USA). Increased test weight in wheat had been recorded with two previous biopesticides at East Valier but not for North Valier, when compared over water control. These results were comparable in efficacy to the chlorpyrifos. This study also suggested that B. bassiana and pyrethrin may work synergistically, as exemplified by lower total larval populations and kernel damage levels when applied together. This study did not demonstrate the effect of any treatments on M. penetrans populations.

Solvent-free aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene over supported Ni catalysts using molecular oxygen at atmospheric pressure

We investigated the aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene in the absence of solvent or any additive carried out over Ni on different types of supports namely SiO2, hydroxyapatite, SBA-15, and USY Zeolites. The oxidation of ethylbenzene activities was measured in a round bottom flask immersed in oil bath at known reaction temperature. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts were examined by BET surface area, XrD, FT-Ir and the oxidation activities were correlated with the acidities of the catalysts obtained by TpD of NH3. It was observed that both hydroxyapatite and USY （13% Na2O） supported Ni catalysts displayed higher ethylbenzene conversion and 80% selectivity towards acetophenone.

Study of Temperature Distribution Along an Artificially polluted Insulator String

Insulator becomes wet partially or completely, and the pollution layer on itbecomes conductive, when collecting pollutants for an extended period during dew, light rain, mist,fog or snow melting. Heavy rain is a complicated factor that it may wash away the pollution layerwithout initiating other stages of breakdown or it may bridge the gaps between sheds to promoteflashover. The insulator with a conducting pollution layer being energized, can cause a surfaceleakage current to flow (also temperature-rise). As the surface conductivity is non-uniform, theconducting pollution layer becomes broken by dry bands (at spots of high current density),interrupting the flow of leakage current. Voltage across insulator gets concentrated across drybands, and causes high electric stress and breakdown (dry band arcing). If the resistance of theinsulator surface is sufficiently low, the dry band arcs can be propagated to bridge the terminalscausing flashover. The present paper concerns the evaluation of the temperature distribution alongthe surface of an energized artificially polluted insulator string.

Due to the characteristic emission of phosphors,phosphor-converted LEDs have been employed to provide the requisite light sources for indoor plant growth in the optical agricultural ***,we prepared a series of Mn^(2+)co-doped NaSrB5 O9:Dy^(3+)phosphors via a solid-state reaction *** phosphors have significant three-band emissions at 467 nm(blue region),606 nm(orange region),and765 nm(far-red region),ascribed to the^(4)F_(9/2)-^(6)H_(15/2)and 4 F9/2-6 H13/2 transitions of the Dy^(3+)ions and the^(4)T_(1g)(G)-^(6)A_(1g)(S)spin-forbidden transition of the Mn^(2+)ions,respectively,when excited by light of 376 nm(near-UV region).The co-dopant in the host material facilitates tunable photoluminescence(pL)due to energy transfer from the Dy^(3+)ions to the Mn^(2+)*** three emission peaks from the prepared phosphors well match with the absorption spectra of the photosynthesis pigments of plants,chlorophyll and phytochrome,which can absorb blue(400-500 nm),orange-red(550-700 nm),and infrared(Ir)radiation,indicating that these phosphors have potential applications in the fabrication of plant-growth *** to the pL studies,the structure of the phosphors was determined by X-ray diffraction,refined by rietveld method and chemically quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

BACKGrOUND In severe cases of coronary artery disease,percutaneous coronary intervention provide promising *** stent used could be a drug-eluting stent(DES)or a titanium-nitride-oxide coated stent(TiNOS).AIM To compare the 5-year effectiveness and safety of the two stent *** The following systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis guidelines,and pubMed/MEDLINE,Scopus,and Cochrane Central were searched from inception till August *** outcomes were major adverse cardiac events(MACE),cardiac death,myocardial infarction(MI),cardiac death or MI,and ischemia-driven total lesion revascularization(ID-TLr).rESULTS Four randomized controlled trials(rCT),which analyzed a sum total of 3045 patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS)after a median follow-up time of 5 years were *** statistically insignificant,an increase in the ID-TLr was observed in patients receiving TiNOSs vs *** addition,MI,cardiac death and MI,and definite stent thrombosis(DST)were significantly decreased in the TiNOS *** analysis revealed no significant results with meta-regression presenting non-ST elevated MI(NSTEMI)as a statistically significant covariate in the outcome of *** TiNOS was found to be superior to DES in terms of MI,cardiac death or MI,and DST outcomes,however,the effect of the two stent types on ID-TLr and MACE was not significant.A greater number of studies are required to establish an accurate comparison of patient outcomes in TiNOS and DES.

Chronic pancreatitis (Cp) is a progressive inflammatory disorder of the pancreas. It is predominantly idiopathic (with an unknown cause) in India and mostly due to alcohol in the West. Diabetes that occur secondary to chronic pancreatitis (T3c Diabetes) is often brittle, and is difficult to attain normoglycemia with conventional treatment requiring multiple doses of insulin. Mild and severe model of Cp was induced in mice by repeated intraperitoneal injections of cerulein and L-arginine respectively with an intent to study islet dysfunction and develop therapeutic strategy in animal models of Cp. Dietary intervention of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) was tested in both the models of Cp for its beneficial effects on insulin secretory functions. pancreata collected upon euthanasia were used to study alterations in the morphology of pancreatic parenchyma and inflammation by staining with H&E and fibrotic changes by Masson’s trichrome and picrosirius staining. Insulin secretory functions of islets were evaluated to test the efficacy of the dietary intervention on β-cell functions. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test was performed to monitor the glucose homeostasis before and after the dietary intervention. Both the models resulted in Cp with dispersed acini, inflammation and fibrosis. The loss of acini and extent of fibrosis was more in L-arginine model. 2-fold improvement in glucose-stimulated insulin secretory functions of islets was observed with 0.5% EGCG dietary intervention in cerulein model of Cp and 1.6-fold in L-arginine model of Cp. A further improvement in insulin secretion by 3.2-fold was observed with additional dietary supplements like N-acetyl cysteine, curcumin in combination with EGCG. Our results thus demonstrate and highlight the therapeutic potential of dietary green tea (EGCG) supplementation in reversing islet dysfunction and improving glucose homeostasis in experimental chronic pancreatitis in mice.

KOH activated carbon derived from biomass-banana fibers as an efficient negative electrode in high performance asymmetric supercapacitor

Here we demonstrate the fabrication, electrochemical performance and application of an asymmetric supercapacitor (AS) device constructed with ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs as positive electrode and KOH activated honeycomb-like porous carbon (K-pC) derived from banana fibers as negative electrode. Initially, the electrochemical performance of hydrothermally synthesized ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs nanocomposite and K-pC was studied in a three-electrode system using 1 M KOH. These materials exhibited a specific capacitance (Cs) of 1327 Fig and 324 F/g respectively at a scan rate of 10 mV/s. Further, the AS device i.e., ss-Ni(OH)(2)/MWCNTs// K-pC in 1 M KOH solution, demonstrated a Cs of 156 F/g at scan rate of 10 mV/s in a broad cell voltage of 0-2.2 V. The device demonstrated a good rate capability by maintaining a Cs of 59 F/g even at high current density (25 A/g). The device also offered high energy density of 63 Wh/kg with maximum power density of 5.2 kW/kg. The AS device exhibited excellent cycle life with 100% capacitance retention at 5000th cycle at a high current density of 25 A/g. Two AS devices connected in series were employed for powering a pair of LEDs of different colors and also a mini fan. Aim: purification of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) from rat testis; separation and identificationunits and their role in eicosanoid biosynthesis. Methods: purification of mt testicular GSTs by affit?phy, employing S-hexylglutathione-linked epoxy-activated Sepharose 6B column and separation of indiby reverse phase-high pressure liquid chromatography (rp-HpLC). Characterization of affinity purified,um dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-pAGE) and Westem blot analysis. The roGSTs in eicosanoid biosynthesis was determined by incubating GSTs with 5, 6-Leukotriene A_4Me (prostaglandin H_2 (pGH_2) and analyzing the products formed on HpLC/TLC. results: The present stumajority of rat testicular GSTs are of Y_b size (60%) with molecular weight of 27 kDa. The most preunits, however, are GST Y_(n2) (27% ), followed by GST Y_c (24% ) and GST Y_(nl) (20%). These testiculavery high Leukotriene C_4 (LTC_4) synthase activity with 5, 6-Leukotriene A4Me (LTA_4Me) as theprostaglandin D (pGD) synthase activity with prostaglandin H_2 (pGH_2) as the substrate. Conclusion:testicular GSTs are Y_b sized and are involved in the synthesis of eicosanoids like LTC_4 and pGD_2.(Asian J Androl 2000 Dec; 2: 277-282)

Investigation of strong shock wave interactions with CeO2 ceramic

Strong shock wave interactions with ceramic material ceria(CeO_(2))in presence of O_(2)and N2 gases were investigated using free piston driven shock tube(FpST).FpST is used to heat the test gas to very high temperature of about 6800-7700 K(estimated)at pressure of about 6.8-7.2 Mpa for short duration(2-4 ms)behind the reflected shock *** is subjected to super heating and cooling at the rate of about 106 K/*** of CeO_(2)sample was done before and after exposure to shock heated test gases(O_(2)and N2).The surface composition,crystal structure,electronic structure and surface morphology of CeO_(2)ceramic were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XpS),X-ray diffraction(XrD),Fourier transform infrared(FTIr)spectrometry,scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HrTEM).results obtained from the experimental investigations show that CeO_(2)can withstand high pressure accompanied by thermal shock without changing its crystal *** CeO_(2)releases lattice oxygen making it possible to shift between reduced and oxidized states upon the interaction with shock heated *** to such reaction mechanism,CeO_(2)ceramic undergoes nitrogen doping with decrease in lattice *** reveal that CeO_(2)retains its crystal structure during strong shock interaction,even at elevated pressure.
