This work is concerned with asymptotic properties of a class of parabolic systems arising from singularly perturbed diffusions. The underlying system has a fast varying component and a slowly changing component. One of the distinct features is that the fast varying diffusion is transient. Under such a setup, this paper presents an asymptotic analysis of the solutions of such parabolic equations. Asymptotic expansions of functional satisfying the parabolic system are obtained. Error bounds are derived.

One-neutron stripping process between^(6)Li and^(209)Bi was studied at 28,30,and 34 MeV using the in-beamγ-ray spectroscopy ***γ-γcoincident analysis clearly identified twoγ-rays feeding the ground and long-lived isomeric states,which were employed to determine the cross *** one-neutron stripping cross sections were similar to the cross sections of complete fusion in the^(6)Li+^(209)Bi system,but the one-neutron stripping cross sections decreased more gradually at the sub-barrier region.A coupled-reaction-channel calculation was performed to study the detailed reaction mechanism of the one-neutron stripping process in^(6)*** calculations indicated that the first excited state of 5 Li is critical in the actual one-neutron transfer mechanism,and the valence proton of 209Bi can be excited to the low-lying excited state in(^(6)Li,^(5)Li)reaction,unlike in the(d,p)reaction.

To understand the wild Oryza genome effect on photosynthesis and its relation to total dry matter accumulation in an elite rice variety, a set of 40 stable introgression lines(ils) BC_3F_8 derived from a cross of Oryza sativa(KMR3) × Oryza rufipogon(WR120) were grown under well watered conditions. Leaf gas exchange measurements and leaf chlorophyll estimates were conducted at the flowering stage. The results revealed significant variations in net photosynthetic rate(pn), transpiration rate(E), transpiration efficiency(pn/E) and carboxylation efficiency(pn/C_i). pn showed significant positive correlation with E, stomatal conductance(g_s), pn/C_i and total canopy dry matter. Specific leaf area and leaf thickness were not significantly correlated with pn. Thirty-seven out of 40 ils showed higher pn than KMR3 [11.28 μmol/(m^2·s)], and 20 ils showed higher pn than WR120 [15.08 μmol/(m^2·s)]. The line il194 showed the highest pn [21.62 μmol/(m^2·s)] with increased total canopy dry matter followed by lines il381, il106, il363-12, il198, il86-18 and il50, which exhibited pn above 18.0 μmol/(m^2·s). The ils with enhanced pn are a potential source for developing rice varieties and hybrids with higher biomass and yield.

Room temperature sodium-sulfur(RT na-S)batteries are gaining extensive attention as attractive alternatives for large-scale energy storage,due to low cost and high abundancy of sodium and sulfur in ***,the dilemmas regarding soluble polysulfides(na_(2)Sn,4nnd the inferior reaction kinetics limit their practical *** address these issues,we report the activated porous carbon fibers(ApCF)with small sulfur molecules(S2-4)confined in ultramicropores,to achieve a reversible single-step reaction in RT na-S *** mechanism is investigated by the in situ UV/vis spectroscopy,which demonstrates na2S is the only product during the whole discharge ***,the hierarchical carbon structure can enhance areal sulfur loading without sacrificing the capacity due to thorough contact between electrolyte and sulfur *** a consequence,the ApCF electrode with 38 wt%sulfur(ApCF-38S)delivers a high initial reversible specific capacity of 1412 mAh g^(-1) and 10.6mAh cm^(-2)(*** sulfur loading:7.5 mg cm^(-2))at 0.1 C(1C=1675 mA g^(-1)),revealing high degree of sulfur *** study provides a new strategy for the development of high areal capacity RT na-S batteries.

The three-dimensional nonlinear quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation is reduced to a linear form in the stream function in spherical coordinates for the permanent wave solutions consisting of zonal wavenumbers from 0 to n and rn vertical components with a given degree *** equation is solved by treating the coefficient of the Coriolis parameter square in the equation as the eigenvalue both for sinusoidal and hyperbolic variations in vertical direction. It is found that these solutions can represent the observed long term flow patterns at the surface and aloft over the globe closely. In addition, the sinusoidal vertical solutions with large eigenvalue G are trapped in low latitude,and the scales of these trapped modes are longer than 10 deg. lat. even for the top layer of the ocean and hence they are much larger than that given by the equatorial β-plane *** such baroclinic disturbances in the ocean can easily interact with those in the *** of the shallow water potential vorticity equation are treated in a similar manner but with the effective depth H=RT/g taken as limited within a small range for the *** propagation of the flow energy of the wave packet consisting of more than one degree is found to be along the great circle around the globe both for barotropic and for baroclinic flows in the atmosphere.

Surgical palliation of unresectable pancreatic head cancer in elderly patients

AIM: To determine if surgical biliary bypass would provide improved quality of residual life and safe palliation in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer. METHODS: nineteen patients, 65 years of age or older, were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group A). These patients were compared with 19 patients under 65 years of age who were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group B). In addition, the results for group A were compared with those obtained from 17 patients, 65 years of age or older (Group C), who received percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage to evaluate the quality of residual life. RESULTS: Five patients (26.0%) in Group A had complications, including one intraabdominal abscess, one pulmonary atelectasis, and three wound infections. One death (5.3%) occurred on postoperative day 3. With respect to morbidity, mortality, and postoperative hospitalization, no statistically significant difference was noted between Groups A and B. The number of readmissions and the rate of recurrent jaundice were lower in Group A than in Group C, to a statistically significant degree (p = 0.019, p = 0.029, respectively). The median hospital-free survival period and themedian overall survival were also signifi cantly longer in Group A (p = 0.001 and p pectively). COnCLUSIOn: Surgical palliation does not increase the morbidity or mortality rates, but it does increase the survival rate and improve the quality of life in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer.
