Neutrophils, crucial players in the effector phase of the immune response, are recognized as important mediators of both innate and adaptive immune responses. Through the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, they modulate the function of T and other lymphoid cells. Countless reports have highlighted the importance of these cells as efficient antimicrobial agents and annotated their involvement in the pathology of infectious and noninfectious diseases. The development of modern, sophisticated technologies has allowed the study of the functions of these cells in clinical settings. These advanced technologies include fluorescence-activated cell sorters, confocal microscopy, automated cell image analyzers, and live cell analysis instruments. Unfortunately, the cost of these modern instruments, maintenance, reagents, and the need for qualified technicians prohibit their use in low-income laboratories and universities in developing countries. With this in mind, we propose a series of basic tests that can be used in low-input clinical laboratories and universities to evaluate the function of neutrophils in health and disease. Our methodology allows us to assess in a practical and low-cost manner the functions of neutrophils in the phagocytic process, including opsonization, ingestion, ROI production (NBT reduction), myeloperoxidase content, phagosome-lysosome fusion, microbicidal activity, and NET production. The main advantages of the use of ionic liquids in enhanced oil recovery are their tunability and stability in harsh environmental conditions. In this work, a comprehensive review of ionic liquids proposed to improve current chemical oil recovery methods has been presented, focusing on core flooding experiments. With an almost infinite number of possible ionic liquids, the amount of experiments carried out up to now has been very limited. However, results are promising, with additional recovery after secondary flooding of up to 32% of the original oil in place. Most formulations with ionic liquids have been proposed for sandstone reservoirs, the number of studies with carbonate cores being very scarce. The possibilities of a new room temperature surface active ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium triflate,for this application were analyzed. It was shown that it is able to drastically reduce the water/oil interfacial tension. An optimized formulation was proposed for carbonate reservoirs. After secondary flooding with brine, an additional recovery of 10.5% of original oil in place was achieved at room conditions. A combination of the proposed method followed by a polymer flooding step with polyacrylamide led to a lesser but still significant recovery, reducing the costs associated to the ionic liquid.

Ionic liquids are possible alternative solvents for the separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by liquid-liquid extrac- tion. Interfacial tension is an important property to consider in the design of liquid-liquid extraction processes. In this work, the liquid-liquid interfacial tension and the mutual solubility at 25 °C have been measured for a series of biphasic, equilibrated mixtures of an ionic liquid and a hydrocarbon. In particular, the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluorome- thanesulfonyl)imide (with the alkyl substituent being ethyl, hexyl or decyl), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate have been selected, as well as the hydrocarbons benzene, hexane, ethylben- zene, and octane. The selected sets of ionic liquids and hydrocarbons allow the analysis of the influence of a series of effects on the interfacial tension. For example, the interfacial tension decreases with an increase in the length of the alkyl substituent chain of the cation or with an increase of the degree of charge delocalisation in the anion of the ionic liquid. Also, the interfa- cial tension with the aromatic hydrocarbons is markedly lower than that with the aliphatic hydrocarbons. A smaller effect is caused by variation of the size of the hydrocarbon. Some of the observed trends can be explained from the mutual solubility of the hydrocarbon and the ionic liquid.
