Coastal upwelling off the southwest coast of India:observations and simulations

Spatial hydrographic data collected from August 2007 through May 2008 and the princeton Ocean Model(pOM)are utilized to explain and document the upwelling in the south eastern Arabian Sea(SEAS).The decrease in the magnitude of winds towards the coast favors local anticyclonic vorticity,resulting in the formation of cyclonic eddy and reversal of coastal *** Ekman transport due to alongshore winds,Ekman pumping due to wind stress curl,cyclonic eddy and southward West Indian Coastal Currents play different roles in the SEAS *** the offshore,wind stress curl leads to the formation of meso-scale eddies,resulting in Ekman pumping at the center and consequent *** rapid depth variation on the western side of Quilon Mount intensifies upwelling in the *** upwelling Kelvin waves generated at the equator terminates in the Bay of Bengal and do not contribute to the SEAS *** possible role of local and remote winds,especially around Sri Lanka on the upwelling dynamics of SEAS is described utilizing *** Kelvin waves generated off the coast of Sri Lanka during the active phase of the summer monsoon also contribute to the upwelling dynamics off the west coast of India.

Targeting LIF/LIFR signaling in cancer

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), and its receptor (LIFR), are commonly over-expressed in many solid cancers and recent studies have implicated LIF/LIFR axis as a promising clinical target for cancer therapy. LIF/LIFR activate oncogenic signaling pathways including JAK/STAT3 as immediate effectors and MApK, AKT, mTOR further downstream. LIF/LIFR signaling plays a key role in tumor growth, progression, metastasis, stemness and therapy resistance. Many solid cancers show overexpression of LIF and autocrine stimulation of the LIF/LIFR axis;these are associated with a poorer relapse-free survival. LIF/LIFR signaling also plays a role in modulating multiple immune cell types present in tumor micro environment (TME). Recently, two targeted agents that target LIF (humanized anti-LIF antibody, MSC-1) and LIFR inhibitor (EC359) were under development. Both agents showed effectivity in preclinical models and clinical trials using MSC-1 antibody are in progress. This article reviews the significance of LIF/LIFR pathways and inhibitors that disrupt this process for the treatment of cancer.

Rubber Seed Kernel as potent Solid Substrate for the production of Lipase by pseudomonas aeruginosa Strain BUp2

This study explored the utility of flours of rubber seed, coconut and groundnut kernels, and de-oiled cakes of coconut and groundnut as solid substrate for the production of lipase by pseudomonas aeruginosa strain BUp2 (MTCC No. 5924), a novel bacterium reported from the rumen of Malabari goat. various proportions (10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50%) of flours or cakes were prepared (w/v) with BUp medium (pH 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8), and incubated at different temperature (25°C, 28°C, 30°C or 32°C) for 24 to 96 h. The samples were assayed for lipase activity at 24 h intervals. The rubber seed flour (20%)-BUp medium supported the maximum lipase production (871 U/gds) at 48h incubation (pH 6, 28°C), followed by ground nut flour (398 U/gds), while ground nut cake supported the least lipase production (244 U/gds). From this, it is evident that the cheaply available rubber seed is an efficient substrate for the production of lipase, irrespective of its known demerit that it contains the limarin, a toxin;in fact, we could not detect limarin in the fermented matter. Thus, the utility of rubber seed for the production of a costly enzyme is reported from a novel rumen bacterium, which would be advantageous for rubber farmers.
