This study investigates the potential of contemporary Earth-Sheltered Buildings to contribute to sustainable societies by achieving plus Energy Building status during the heating season.The buildings analyzed are intended to house a four-member family(102.5 m^(2)).The house is equipped with a ground source heat pump,geothermal vertical probes,floor heating panels,an energy recovery ventilator,and building-integrated photovoltaic panels installed on the exposed building wall.The numerical analysis(using Energyplus software)was carried out for nine European sites covering five different climatic zones(namely:southern,Atlantic,continental,alpine,and northern climate)and three latitude belts spanning Europe from south to north.Buildings above 65°N(northern and alpine climate)could not achieve plus Energy status with 20% efficient BIpVs.With 15% efficient BIpVs,the building above 59°N(northern climate)was incapable of achieving this as well.Regarding the monthly time step,the buildings in the southern and Atlantic climates with 15% efficient BipVs were able to produce an energy surplus every month,as was the building in theAlps with 20% efficientBIpVs.

Maltagliati et al.1 recently highlighted the vital role of affective experiences in promoting physical activity(pA).The authors suggested that positive affective experiences,rather than health benefits,can tip the balance in favor of pA over sedentary alternatives.The authors proposed a new formal decision model between pA and sedentary alternatives and reported that when health benefits are the unique reason to action,the costs of pA(e.g.,effort)and the subjective value(SV)of sedentary alternatives(V_(sed))are the main drivers of decision-making processes.

Complete surgical resection(R0)of liver tumors,primary or metastatic,remains the main objective in management of primary and metastatic liver tumors[1].Tumors invading to the proximity of the hepatic venous outflow pose a peculiar challenge to achieve R0 resections,because this location may render a tumor unresectable.The median survival of patients with liver tumor without surgery is less than 12 months[2].Even with surgery,post-hepatectomy liver failure and subsequently increased mortality are the main problems associated with complex resection[3].Moreover,when the vein is affected,vein resection and subsequent reconstruction are necessary.Vascular resection is a standard practice in liver resection and transplantation[4],for example,hepatic vein reconstruction during a living-donor liver transplant,porto-mesenteric axis reconstruction during resection of advanced pancreatic cancer and caval reconstruction during resection of retroperitoneal tumors.Thus,novel techniques like total hepatic vascular exclusion(HVE)[5],veno-venous bypass[6]and ex vivo hepatic resection[7,8]have facilitated curative resections of tumors close to one or more major hepatic veins.

1.Light intensity physical activity(pA)benefits health pA guidelines worldwide recommend that adults accumulate 150 min of moderate intensity or 75 min of vigorous intensity pA(moderate-to-vigorous pA(MVpA))weekly to achieve health benefits.1-3 Absent from these guidelines are recommendations for light intensity pA(LpA,e.g.,walking at a leisurely pace of 3 km/h or less,equivalent to 1.5-2.9 metabolic equivalents).

The Marplex Convention was established to prevent the manufacture of unmarked plastic explosives and stipulates that a volatile detection agent must be added at the time of manufacture.However,to-date,laboratory testing remains the internationally accepted practice for identifying and quantifying the taggants stipulated in the Convention.In this project,portable FTIR and Raman instruments were tested for their ability to detect 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane(DMDNB),the chemical marker incorporated in plastic explosives that are manufactured within Australia.While both FTIR and Raman instruments detected solid DMDNB(98%purity),field analysis of plastic explosives at an Australian Defence establishment showed that both FTIR and Raman spectra were matched the relevant explosive(RDX or pETN),rather than the DMDNB taggant.For all three plastic explosives tested,the concentration of DMDNB was measured by SpME-GC-MS to be between 1.8 and 2%,greater than the minimum 1%concentration stipulated by the Marplex Convention.Additional testing with a plastic explosive analogue confirmed that the minor absorption peaks that would characterize low concentrations of DMDNB were masked by absorption bands from other compounds within the solid.Thus,while both FTIR and Raman spectroscopy are suitable for detection of plastic explosives,neither rely on the presence of DMDNB for detection.It is likely that similar results would be found for other taggants stipulated by the Marplex Convention,given they are also present in concentrations less than 1%.

A versatile analytical method(VAM) for calculating the harmonic components of the magnetomotive force(MMF) generated by diverse armature windings in AC machines has been proposed, and the versatility of this method has been established in early literature. However, its practical applications and significance in advancing the analysis of AC machines need further elaboration. This paper aims to complement VAM by augmenting its theory, offering additional insights into its conclusions, as well as demonstrating its utility in assessing armature windings and its application of calculating torque for permanent magnet synchronous machines(pMSM). This work contributes to advancing the analysis of AC machines and underscores the potential for improved design and performance optimization.

Coverage and determinants of infant postnatal care in Nigeria: A population-based cross-sectional study

Importance: In 2019, Nigeria had the largest number of under-5 child deaths globally and many of these deaths occurred within the first week of life. The World Health Organization recommends infant postnatal care (pNC) attendance to support newborn survival; however, utilization of pNC is known to be low in many contexts.Objective: This study examined coverage and individual-level determinants of infant pNC attendance in Nigeria.Methods: Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) 2018 data were used to evaluate infant pNC coverage and determinants. Infant pNC was defined as receipt of care within 2 days of birth. Children delivered up to 2 years before the 2018 NDHS were included. We examined predictors of infant pNC with modified poisson regression models to estimate relative risks (RRs).Results: The national coverage of infant pNC was 37.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.8%–38.7%). Significant heterogeneity in pNC attendance existed at state and regional levels. Facility delivery was strongly associated with the uptake of pNC (RR: 6.07; 95% CI: 5.60–6.58). Greater maternal education, maternal employment, urban residence, female head of household, and greater wealth were also associated with an increased likelihood of pNC visits.Interpretation: The uptake of infant pNC is low and interventions are urgently needed to promote equity in access and increase demand for pNC in Nigeria.

Fluidic force microscopy(FluidFM)fuses the force sensitivity of atomic force microscopy with the manipulation capabilities of microfluidics by using microfabricated cantilevers with embedded fluidic channels.This innovation initiated new research and development directions in biology,biophysics,and material science.To acquire reliable and reproducible data,the calibration of the force sensor is crucial.Importantly,the hollow FluidFM cantilevers contain a row of parallel pillars inside a rectangular beam.The precise spring constant calibration of the internally structured cantilever is far from trivial,and existing methods generally assume simplifications that are not applicable to these special types of cantilevers.In addition,the Sader method,which is currently implemented by the FluidFM community,relies on the precise measurement of the quality factor,which renders the calibration of the spring constant sensitive to noise.In this study,the hydrodynamic function of these special types of hollow cantilevers was experimentally determined with different instruments.Based on the hydrodynamic function,a novel spring constant calibration method was adapted,which relied only on the two resonance frequencies of the cantilever,measured in air and in a liquid.Based on these results,our proposed method can be successfully used for the reliable,noise-free calibration of hollow FluidFM cantilevers.

Abandoned chemical smelting sites containing toxic substances can seriously threaten and pose a risk to the surrounding ecological environment.Soil samples were collected from different depths(0 to 13 m)and analyzed for metal(loid)s content and fractionation,as well as microbial activities.The potential ecological risk indices for the different soil depths(ordered from high to low)were:1 m(D-1)>surface(S-0)>5 m(D-5)>13 m(D-13)>9 m(D-9),ranging between 1840.65-13,089.62,and representing extremely high environmental risks,of which Cd(and probably not arsenic)contributed to the highest environmental risk.A modified combined pollution risk index(MCR)combining total content and mobile proportion of metal(loid)s,and relative toxicities,was used to evaluate the degree of contamination and potential environmental risks.For the near-surface samples(S-0 and D-1 layers),the MCR considered that As,Cd,pb,Sb,and Zn achieved high and alarming degrees of contamination,whereas Fe,Mn,and Ti were negligible or low to moderate pollution degrees.Combined microcalorimetry and enzymatic activity measurements of contaminated soil samples were used to assess the microbial metabolic activity characteristics.Correlation analysis elucidated the relationship between metal(loid)s exchangeable fraction or content and microbial activity characteristics(ppresumably due to heavy metal stress.Enzyme activity indicators and microcalorimetric growth rate(k)measurements were considered sensitive indicators to reflect the soil microbial activities in abandoned chemical smelting sites.
